Also, here's why it's canon:
1. Cas says that the one thing he wants is something he knows he can't have, then proceeds to make this declaration--a declaration of all the reasons why he loves Dean. He already has Dean's platonic love, his friendship, and whatever else in between. So, why else would he do this speech if he wasn't telling Dean that he was romantically in love with him? Dean’s the one thing that he wants but can’t have. Castiel's moment of happiness is in just realizing that BEING in love with Dean Winchester is enough, and accepting that he doesn't need to HAVE Dean in the way that he wants him in order to be happy.
2. Watch the show. It's all there. The quality of the writing and execution may have gone down over the seasons, but it's all there.
3. I just think it's also important to also note that Dean had to process so much information in less than 5 minutes (Cas' deal, Cas' declaration of love, Cas' motivations, Cas' eventual death), so he's obviously in a state of shock. And if you've watched the show, you'll know that Dean's more of an "actions" guy. Again, key takeaway here is: watch the show.
4. Canon means it is "officially written into the story". Regardless of how poorly it's been written, it's still canonically written that Castiel is in love with Dean Winchester.
5. Did I want it to go down this way? No. But I'll take what I can get. I've been watching this show for 15 years, and shipping them for 11-12. I think there were several moments in all the other seasons that would've been the perfect segue (just refer to the fanvids or even canon-compliant fanfics) into a declaration of love or even into a romantic relationship, but the writers were too busy with fillers and irrelevant storylines.
6. I really would've loved to see them kiss at least before Cas shoved him away. Partly because we deserve to see that, and partly to just get all the haters and naysayers to stfu.
You said it all! I think we all deserve that kiss, or that "I love you too", I don't know how they are going to do it, but Cas deserves it, our ship from years needs it too. I think that would be the unique thing that we can heal, because now it all is pain because of his left.

i agree with all this, and we should have gotten a kiss, but in that moment, how that scene went, and how shocked dean was, a kiss would have felt forced...

I love how Castiel 's true happiness is the bond he shares with the person who taught him about humanity. Dean made Cas into a true person not just a mindless soldier of Heaven
I’m actually devastated by how Castiel’s story has ended! How could the writers be so cruel? Giving us such a heartfelt love declaration then ripping Castiel from us straight afterwards? 💔😭
Because you can love someone and not be romantically involved with that person. Also, not all love is reciprocal. I personally believe what Cas was saying is that he loved Dean -- as a person, a brother, and like family. Jensen knows Dean better than anyone and he declared that was the extent of their bond. Anything other than that is pure fan fiction. If you want to enjoy fan fiction, by all means. That's your/whoever's choice. You also can't ignore the truth of the matter. And I felt heartbroken when I saw what happened but also very touched. I think it did their bond justice.
@@fadelessdreamer And Misha says Cas means this romantically, Jensen not being a Destiel shipper also in no way disproves Cas' feelings since he's not the writer of the show. Ultimately it's up to the writers to decide this, and the fact that they literally had Cas say that he wanted something he couldn't have? What do you think that means? He clearly already had Dean as a platonic friend and as family. You'd have to be really making an effort in order to twist that wish around to be platonic, and you have a right to, but this is a Destiel fanvid so why are you here trying to convince people their ship isn't valid? :/
@@fadelessdreamer you can absolutely love someone in a platonic way but i think cas loved dean romantically. him saying his happiness is "something he can never have" and then basically telling dean its him implies that he wanted to be more than friends with him. he already had deans friendship and brotherhood, so that couldn't be his true happiness. his confession made him feel at peace with himself. it was beautifully written and acted and absolutely did their bond justice.

But I get it. Another fandom I was in, the two guys kissed and had sex twice, declared their love for each other (not to each other's face tho, they pulled this kinda number where one died to save the other guy before the other could say it back directly to them), and I still saw people denying they were canon, presumably because one of them had an ex-girlfriend, and as we all know, bisexuals don't exist xP So there's no way Dean/Castiel should be considered canon either.
So yeah I do agree they should have had them at least kiss, or something, because it is pretty weaksauce in this day and age to not do that if they actually mean Destiel to be canon and aren't just queerbaiting some more. I'm assuming the next episodes will just be everyone dying unhappy, just like how the showrunners always wanted this show to end, so this probably is as canon as it gets unless Word of God decides to declare otherwise. Which is pretty sad, this no happy ending sucks for Castiel, even if his relationship with Dean had been canon-confirmed.

This hurts, them going canon hurts, but I'm weirdly happy with both, and I don't know what to do with all the emotions.

The good thing with SPN is that nothing ever really ends, and deaths don't need to be permanent. The show obviously needs to have some sort of end-point, but there's nothing stopping us as fans from imagining what happens after that, and envisioning a happy ending for these characters. Just like if the show ended after season 3 and Dean was dead, we could have still envisioned a happy continuation and that's what we got in the show. Basically the world of SPN being what it is makes me feel more at peace with this "ending" of the show, since we can't with certainty say it's for sure the end, if that makes sense.

I vote for season 9 when he becomes human. I think at the end of season 9 when Metatron confronts him and says: "He's in love... with humanity" that he realises the implication there and the truth behind those words.

The fact that Dean reciprocates Castiel's feelings hurts even more. It reminds me of how we take everything for granted until something bad happens and you remember you never said I love you to the person you care the most about.

But I’ve realized it’s not in the having, it’s just being or even just by saying it” and then he basically told Dean that he had changed him and that he learned to love bc of Dean. And when he said “I love you” the Empty came and took him. To say those words to Dean made Cas truly happy even if he knew that Dean wouldn’t feel the same.
That is more than friendship.
And the reason Dean were so speechless were that he’s best friend since 12 years just confessed that he loved him....

I started out a Destiel fan...but then the shippers started getting too toxic for me and my love for it died out. This made me remember why I loved them so much. Thank you. We cry together and mourn together. And love together.

The part hat Dean is on his knees and tells Cas he needs him was originally scripted as I love you but they changed it
It made sense to change it though. We know Dean loves Cas at that point, and I get they wanted to include that for fan service, but he is not the type to vocalize his emotions like that. He can barely tell his own brother he loves him, it would have felt out-of-character for Dean to say that. So even as a big Destiel shipper I actually agree with Jensen on that script-change.
@@mieroth -- Plus, if Dean had said it at that point, it would have seemed manipulative -- just trying to give Cas what he wants (and Dean damn well knows that, however much he denies it to himself) in order to keep Cas from killing him. If Dean were ever going to say it, it would need to be at a time when he was just saying the words because he meant them.

Yeah, I hate all the randoms judging that scene without any sort of context, half have never even seen Supernatural and half stopped watching the show years ago. This includes the "stop watching after season 5" anti-SPN hate brigade who are "fans" but only of seasons 1-5 and will always try to belittle the rest of the show. I just got so tired seeing those comments, finding actual FANS of the show was amazing because most (not all, but most) actual fans found that scene to be so powerful, had no issue with Dean being Dean and not computing (and then being in shock at the info overload) as is perfectly in character, and then him breaking down afterwards (which no one else realized because they HAVEN'T WATCHED THE SHOW). Seriously, sorry for rant but got so tired of arguing with people, that's the downside of Destiel trending worldwide... I agree with you that this comment section is a breath of fresh air!

Don't these people know what having a lump in your throat is when you're sad and trying to control yourself and can't swallow properly, that's clearly what's happening here (it's one of the most obvious acting cues to portray strong sadness). It's just a disingenuous read of the scene done entirely in bad faith by people with an agenda. I had to take a break from Twitter after this episode and went back to old fanvids to discuss this episode with fans, it makes me sad to think of Misha seeing even a fraction of that nonsense... (but, then again, he's prob used to fandom and internet nonsense by now, I saw people in his threads being very supportive).

I felt every ounce of his pain because I knew exactly how he was feeling, because I know Dean. And these people don’t, and it’s stupid that they’re making these comments when they have no idea how Dean usually reacts to things. He was clearly shocked and confused, and later devastated to us because we know how he looks when he feels that way. And I also think a lot of people didn’t even see that scene of him sobbing into his hands at the end because, well, they didn’t watch the episode. 😕
@@miraculoussugarcube552 Exactly, that's part of the context that's needed. We know how to read Dean through seasons of growing with him. I also felt his pain in this scene and didn't at all understand the memes about him being completely fine with this. :/

I am honestly crushed by this. I was in tears for hours afterwards, and I've woken up this morning still hurting. I didn't think we were going to get anything before the end of the series, but this almost hurts more than if they had never said anything. But I still won't consider it canon unless we hear something from Dean. As much as my Destiel shipping heart leapt with joy when I heard Cas finally say I love you, I need to hear it back from Dean. Even if he just whispers it alone.

It's amazing how Supernatural can go gay without going completely gay. I wholeheartedly believe Castiel is IN love with Dean. I think he loves him in almost all manners. I don't think he sees gender, I think he just sees Dean's soul.
However, I also believe Dean is straight. Castiel is his best friend, his brother, and on a lot of levels, definitely a soulmate. But I still don't believe he's attracted to Castiel's human form. People wanna argue, but let's think about it. If this were reversed, with Dean being gay and Castiel's vessel female, a lot of you would be throwing a fit saying he can't just change from being gay to straight for Cas. Not all, but a lot. Therefore the same rule has to be applied here.
If they had mentioned in passing even once that Dean had dated a guy, and not got all nervous because one flirted with him or he MAYBE checked one out, I would believe the romantic love was returned. Alas, no solid proof. Just little bits of hopeful evidence seen through shipper eyes. And let's be honest, some of that was done purposely by the writers.
None the less, I would scream in shipper delight if Dean confessed that he was IN love with Cas before Supernatural is over. Until then, I will cry at Castiel's bittersweet end, and hope it's truly not.
Will I be watching this every day now to fill the void in my soul? Yes, yes I will
