One thing I am struggling with right now is my styling consistency. I thought I did much better on my wash day and styling yesterday, but then someone sent me a picture from an event last night and my hair looked wet and crispy in it...ugh back to the drawing board... Growing up, I didn't have anyone else in my family who knew how to care for curls and I did not discover your channel until a few months ago! Thank you so much for teaching us all of these things and sharing your thoughts and results on various products!!! So helpful 😊

I started on my curly hair journey to reduce the frizz and make my hair more manageable overall. I’ve changed my conditioner and added a curl cream which really help keep my hair healthy and bouncy. I think changing one product at a time is the way to go, it can be so expensive to buy a bunch of products and inevitable some won’t work out

I would never give up on my curly hair, but sometimes it feels like information and work overload. It's hard to switch products, especially when you just found your favorites but ended up moving climates (again). My mental health sometimes also gets in the way, and all I can do is put enough product to keep my hair happy. Sometimes I want to skip the diffusing too because it's a lot, but I have to remind myself that if I airdry then my hair will get greasy again.
But I love watching these videos and learning more to keep my hair as healthy as possible, because I always glow when a stylist said "Here is someone who has been taking care of their hair!" 🥺

I agree w you on the maintenance bit. I laugh when people say straightening their hair is easier… No it isn’t!!! At least for me, straightening just means you’re introducing damage that makes your hair misbehave more the longer you do it. Also it never fking lasts anyway my waves come back the moment i sweat or it rains or do any sort of physical activity. I can get the same result by brushing it out and taming the poofiness with oil. And it gets dirty faster. So really they’re not much difference in maintenance for most of us anyway, people are just more comfortable doing what they’ve always done rather than investing in different products and techniques.

All good tips. I first nursed my curly hair back waay back in 2008 with Curl keeper. Now my curls changed in the past 2years because of dealing with low iron. It's up and down. It's made the ends of my hair thinner and therefore more prone to tangles and knows so I'm figuring out what to do and use. My hair stylist said the best oil that hair absorbs without getting weighed down is coconut oil, it's like the 1oil I've never tried so we'll see.
Another thing I do is that 1x month, don't put anything in your hair and just let it be itself and surdty with no product, it can be a very good way to see what state your hair is in naturally with no manipulation from products. And I think it's just god to let the hair breathe every once in a while like taking a break from makeup.

I want to give up on my hair most days, although over time I’ve definitely gotten used to the look of my natural wavy hair. My curls are very inconsistent so I’d call it more wavy. It looks like your clip when simulating the over moisturised hair. Mine does get over moisturised easily and it’s always frizzy. Thanks to your videos I’ve gotten much better at styling it so I don’t have to refresh as much, but the biggest thing I’ve learned is what you said about learning to love how my hair looks and not expect it to look like other people’s curls. It’s never going to be proper curly and that’s ok ❤

Thank you, so much Gena. As I have said in a previous post, probably a year or so ago, I haven't always had naturally curly hair. I lost most of my hair to illness a couple years ago, and it grew back curly. I worry every day my hair will stop growing in curly, but it's been almost 2 years and it's still curly. I don't get the tight ringlets in a few areas that I used to, but my hair is still very curly. Gena, one of your videos was THE first curly girl video I ever watched! I have learned a lot from you! I was one of those who was intimidated the first time I ever watched one of your routines. But I LOVE not having to take care of my curly hair every single day. LOL I've actually embraced some frizz. I have soft hair, and I struggle with having root volume, so the frizz actually helps give it a little more volume. I've learned I can actually be lazy with my hair. I have really thick, mostly fine hair, so brush styling is a must to separate the clumps, but my curls do great if I brush style lazily. I've never quite learned the art of separating sections, so I've just learned to brush style without sectioning. Thanks to you introducing me to the tangle teaser, I have much nicer, defined curls, now. Truthfully, I only refresh if my hair has started to really show stretching and I am having to go out to a function of some kind, and then, I only dampen my hair with a little spritzing, scrunch it back up and only have to diffuse for 5 or so minutes and my hair looks like wash day! Most times, I just fluff out my hair and go. I get compliments on it quite often, especially, since I've had it cut into a bob. I wanted to thank you for teaching me how to take care of my curly hair and helping make my curly journey so much more fun! I never want to lose my curls! I would still watch you, though. LOL
And BTW, your hair looks great! Day 2 looked fabulous!

I had my hair highlighted earlier this year and it hasn't been the same since. I also dyed my own hair not too long ago to cover up the bright blonde ends. Last year my problem was my hair not absorbing the product at all, because it was all virgin low porosity hair.

Thanks Gena… I’ve pretty much bought every product you mention! My hair is low density , high porosity with about 4” of bleach still on the ends . But I also color my roots because I’m grey and not ready to embrace the grey ,I’m a young 70!
Some wash days turn out better then others and it’s still a little struggle to figure out if it’s a moisture issue or a protein issue.
My curls are like your sister , starts partway down my hair .
Anyway all that aside , is it an impossible thing to have colored hair and still get hair to curl and hold ?

I am letting my curly hair after having it straight for my whole life. It has been quite a challenge. I do not know what can I do to make it consistent and without frizz. I am 77 years and I thought about simplifying my hair care because it was becoming harder to blow dry it, but is not so simple. I will be going to my country of origen to send 3 months and the weather there is hot, sunny and humid. I will appreciate advice to look well and have a simple routine. My hair is virgin, and is salt and pepper. Medium think, no damage, no split ends. I use shampoo and conditioner " its not your mother' s naturals" and a clarifying shampoo once a month. I use a Curl defining cream called Moroccanoil. For frizz I have started to use a little Frizz ease by John Frieda is a foam. I usually air dry mostly and finish with a difuser a few minutes. Can you advice, to improve, or change my routine please.

Speaking of bonnets, I've tried all of the traditional bonnets, including those you've specifically linked, and they don't stay on, I think because the back of my head is shaped quite flat. Instead, I've switched to a "Scrunch It" sleep cap, which seems to work much better for me. Are you familiar with them, and if so what are your thoughts on them?

It is so hard for me because I am limited by the products I can use. I have MCAS and an autoimmune scalp condition, so 75% of hair products bother me either due to reactions to fragrance, oils, and synthetic ingredients.
Leave-in products are the hardest to find and the most irritating since they aren't immediately washed out. I know most routines have a curl cream for moisture plus a gel or mousse for hold, but everything I have tried so far I have reacted to except making oat gel from scratch. I may have to experiment in the kitchen to find the best gel and cream for myself. It's trial and error for now but I keep going.

My hair is more wavy than curyly. I guess its in between the two. I have a hard time getting volume on the top of my head. Ive been using shea moisture curl cream-and its thick-so I guess that might be one of my issues. I use a gel (aussie) and mouse (tresemme) all for curls-I haven't invested in the more expensive products yet-I have Nexxus leave in conditioner for curly hair-would that be a curl cream? Im still trying to get mine where i want it-I was highlighting but stopped and Im trying to get it back to my natural color-whatever that may be but its a struggle. I do have course, fine hair and sometimes I just want to give up.

I have run into this challenge: I can get my hair to look pretty nice for the first 2 days, and then it just starts getting very fluffy and frizzy. Due to wearing it in a bun when I sleep and workout. I wear a buff/headband most of the time, but it always slips off in my sleep, and it tends to smash the curl definition. I am hesitant to wear a sleeping cap just because it is not the most romantic thing to wear to the marital bed. One thing I am starting to do is going from washing it once a week to twice a week. I originally went from twice a week to once a week, to cut down on the time it takes. I have very thick 3B curly hair, and it also gets so dry, the longer I go between washes.

Hi Gena! I was wondering if I could ask you something. I have very fine hair, but more looser pattern than yours, I would say 2b and low porosity. I have been on this journey for over a year and really at wits end with my hair.. I always use a leave-in and then 2 gels or gel/mousse combo. I struggle to get hold with just one gel. My problem is my hair looks good after SOTC and for a few hours after, but during the afternoon it gets flat on top and I loose a lot of definition. I am really at a loss, I know I don't use the best stylers, but where I live I don't have many options.. I am starting to think I should stop using leave-ins. I have seen that not all wavies find a leave-in necessary, maybe it is weighing my hair down, but will my hair not get dry without the moisture from a leave-in? So at a lost with my hair. Please any advice would be so appreciated!!🌹🌹

I am about a month into my curl journey and I am having to wash my hair everyday. I wash my hair at night, by 3 the next day my curls are super flat. Trying to refresh them just crates more fizz and worse curls than just washing and styling my hair all over again. No matter what gel, foam gel, mousse or foam mousse I use, I never get that cast. I have probably spent $400 in a month on trying to find the right products and still no luck. It’s frustrating but I’m not giving up, just going broke lol

This might not be your issue, but I had a similar problem (spent hundreds on products too) and when I stopped using products with coconut oil I got better results, more bounce and less frizz. Now I can use a small amount of high end products (like curl smith or Innersense) with coconut but at first my hair was very frizzy and flat with most coconut oil products, even shampoo and conditioner. Just a thought. Good luck ❤

Same here. I also still end up with flattened hair even though I pile it on my head and my bonnet is a little smaller to keep it on top of my head. It's so frustrating!

Do you, or anyone else, have any suggestions for UA-camrs with low density AND multiple curl patterns AND course texture? The one thing I see so many people complain about yet I don't see any UA-camrs making videos on is for solutions for people who have curly hair underneath but only wavy hair on top, coupled with the problem of having low density where it just can't be fixed with a layered haircut. The problem of inconsistency in the curl pattern across one person's head is never ever addressed, but the most successful UA-camrs are young, have the best, most consistent curls of their entire life- like India, Curly Penny when she had her long hair, oh and a couple of the Middle Eastern Indian women who have the most gorgeous, thick and consistent curls, and lets face it, they could put peanut butter on their hair and it would still look good Like 99.9999999% of people don't have that hair and never will. Curly is one thing, wavy is a whole other beast.

Manes by Mel has videos on why you have different curl patterns in different parts of your head. And Swavy Curly Courtney does great videos for waives, and wavy curly hybrids. I have the same as you, big waves that will only spiral in clumps over an inch square, and need length (Mel talks about curl clump size etc in her videos). And typical 3A curls that are very ropey underneath. I found I had to alternate between curly and wavey techniques while transitioning. Now I do the bowl method most often, as it lets each curl do what it wants. But will brush style if the curls underneath start looking less clumped. It’s frustrating though, as brush styling makes my waves look stringy.

@@azarialr6639 I know why there's different patterns, what I don't know is how to cut it or style it. I have to use heat - either to elongate the curls or curl the waves, hence the reason I typically just straighten all of it. SO much easier. Thank you for the suggestions, I'll check out those channels.

Omg that's me... If I do a half bun all my lower half hair is very curly compared to the top half.

Wouldn’t wide tooth comb be better than a brush?

I have no idea what to ask for for a haircut! I'm disabled so i can't afford a more expensive cut than great clips. I have fine but medium to thick density, low porosity hair. I'm just starting to work with my curls after years of air drying with no products

Ask for a round cut at whatever length you want with a lot of layers. Going a bit shorter will help you a lot at first because you hair is probably damaged so cutting labor off will help. It will need less product and be easier to work with.

    Thanks for the tipps!
I started my curly journey 2,5 months ago and have never thought about giving up. I enjoy my curls even though they are absolutely not perfect. But I struggle to go in public wearing my hair open because I feel selfconscious about them. So I wear them open at home and every time I leave the house I pull them in a messy bun. I would like not to feel like having to hide my curls and hope my curl confidence grows with time and more healthy hair …
Btw What confuses me: why is it often recommended to style the curls (soaking) wet (so that they make this squishy sound when scrunched) - I believe that when the hair is full of water it cannot absorb any of the good ingredients of tge product.

      The wetter the less frizz.
If I put my products in with it only being sorta wet I get more frizz.
I don't need it to be dripping wet but it has to be fully wet, no dry spots. I don't have thick hair either.. it's really fine and thin.

I stopped dying my hair 4 years ago ( I am 65 ) My gray hairs are coming in like highlights , and my hair is so thick , I swear I have hair for 4 people , I have been struggling excepting my natural wavy/ curly hair for the same length of time, but after stressing about the frizz I am excepting it , because no matter what you do when you have natural hair it's going to frizz up

Did you have thick hair before you stopped dyeing it or did the grey grow in thicker? Am thinking of doing the same thing in a few years and hoping the natural gray hair will be thicker.

@@margotskadberg1792 I have always had thick hair and the gray is more difficult to work with but I chose it over putting chemicals to get rid of the gray
