- Ralph Stanley - The Old Town School of Folk Music, Evanston, IL (April 14, 1978)
Ralph Stanley - Curly Ray Cline - Jack Cooke - Junior Blankenship - Charlie Sizemore - Dan Marshall
This show is an early one featuring Charlie Sizemore, Junior Blankenship and Dan Marshall. Many of the featured songs had only been recorded for Ralph's "Down Where The River Bends" LP a little over fortnight before (29th March 1978) and hadn't been released yet.
Unfortunately the sound quality on the second set isn't as good, with a little audio 'bleed' from earlier in the recording...
Thanks to Jim Stephenson & also to the late Urban Haglund for the Frontier Ranch 1978 photo. Miss you buddy!
PS: Ralph was playing Stanleytone #4 on this show - wonder where that banjo is now!

Beautiful Music 😊
Glad to find this good music. I love finding Stanley music with Charlie Sizemore.
I love this stuff
This music is awesome
On fire!
How wonderful to have saved.
Man, they were tight as a drum that gig. The sound and tone of the instruments is outstanding.
Junior Blankenship was 18 years old here and Charlie Sizemore was the grand old age of 17. Just kids.
Thought I heard all their numbers but ‘Who’s gonna mow my grass’ never heard before. Nice stompin’ sound. Love it.
This is really great to have on UA-cam! An early live show with Charlie Sizemore and Junior…. this line up of the Clinch Mtn. Boys I’ve always thought was pretty special! Thank you for putting these shows up on here!👍
And I’m also wondering where Stanleytone #4 wound up!
Thanks buddy - the period with Charlie Sizemore is often overlooked I reckon & they made some good albums back then too.
Charlie Sizemore might have been his best lead singer. I certainly prefer him over Roy Lee and Keith Whitley. I just think he blends better with Ralph. Sammy Adkins is underrated, too. @@BluegrassBuzzbomb
I agree! @@raynothstine7649
Whitley had recently been poached by JD Crowe
