  • British Army Challenger 2 DTT (Driver Training Tank) and Warrior IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) are seen driving on public roads in South West England.
All drivers of the Royal Armoured Corps undertake their initial driver training at ‘The Armour Centre’, Bovington. Here they train on their vehicles in different scenarios and varying terrain.
The Challenger 2 DTT is the platform which student Challenger drivers train on prior to moving onwards to their frontline regiments. It’s essentially a Challenger 2 with the turret removed and a superstructure in its place.
The Warrior IFV is equipped with a 30mm canon as the main armament and can carry seven soldiers in the rear. Under current plans the vehicle will be replaced by the Boxer.

Thanks for bringing back some more memories. I've spent hours at the viewing area in the dim and distant. I would love to go back when C3 is finally allowed out onto the road!

I grew up in Wareham 5 miles from Bovy, in the 60’s and 70’s and this is nothing new. Frequently saw them and still do when I return home, on the road through East Stoke and the Puddletown Road.

@@WarMachineTV-nr3jn Long before the Wareham bypass was built they would come through the town and usually go left at the traffic light crossroads and go over the level crossing at the station then up the Bere Road to Bere Regis and back to Bovy. Of course they weren’t Challengers in those days but Chieftains. Also used to get 432s a lot as well and members of the Alvis fleet too. Great stuff.

@@WarMachineTV-nr3jn Another thing which always made me smile and still does thinking about it, you have some 30 odd tonnes of armoured vehicle making good progress and stuck on the front and back is a six inch square magnetic L plate!! Thanks for a great video - happy memories.

There is a civi driving test for these, class H maybe? As I recall, it doesn’t include those manoeuvres.

I remember going down to Bovingdon tank museum with my uncle (ex 3RTR ‘44 - ‘53) and seeing a warning sign to look out for tanks turning!
If you can’t see 66 ton tank turning you really shouldn’t be driving 😂😂😂😂

I think the idea is to warn that there might be a vehicle nearly stopped, across the entire road, round the next bend.
