Making a Kiln-Formed Vessel (my first!!)

- I'm not sure I would recommend any of what I did here, but in case you want to know the details, here's what I can share.
Glass: uncertain because it was part of an unmarked scrap lot that I purchased, but fairly confident it's orange and white streaky glass, #2123 (oh, and LOTS of clear Tekta)
Stainless steel former and bottomless mold from Bonny Doon Fused Glass Tools
Full fuse firing schedule:
300-1100-30
75-1225-90
600-1500-45
9999-900-180 (long anneal for thick slab!)
100-600-0
200-100-0
Drop schedule:
(super slow because the garage was cold, glass was thick, and position was very close to lid elements)
50-250-0
75-600-0
100-1250-45 (I set it for 3 hours but knew I would watch and it skip to next segment and flash cool when the vase was in a good position. This was about 45 min)
9999-900-180 (long anneal again)
100-300-0 (slow, controlled cool down)
9999-100-0 - Навчання та стиль
Nice gift - she will remember it for ever - you keep doing these things and I keep wanting to try but haven’t even turned on my kiln yet!😂
Just do it!!!
That creamsicle glass is gorgeous. I love the finished project. Nice save.
Thanks for taking us on your wonderful journey. I am enjoying the ride.
Good for you Jamaison! I love that you're brave enough to share your failures as well as successes. I don't feel so bad when my experiments go sideways.
Hi Jamaison! seeing you suffer, I felt very identified ! I do the casting in the same way. Regarding the mold, when I use a ceramic mold, between the mold and the glass I put a ring of ceramic blanket, that prevents the glass from slipping through the center, more in a case like this, where the ring has depth and the glass can fall uneven . I love your work ! it takes a lot of courage to deal with drop up ! 👏👏👏👏
I'm surprised the original plate didn't sell -- it was completely delightful. I went immediately to your on-line shop to buy it, but found nothing even similar -- gosh, that orange plate was spectacular!
Thanks for the feedback. Arguably, the audience for my finished glass pieces is different than the audience for my videos. 😉
Jamaison, you made me laugh out loud several times during this video. First of all, you are brilliant! I think the vase/vessel for your first try is exceptional and what you did to save it I think made it turn out even better. I am very impressed and always uplifted by your "well, may as well try at this point, nothing left to lose!" attitude. Thank you for sharing and inspiring, you are the best! 😊👍💖
I was nervous for you! Turned out great! Thank you for making the video! Encouraging!
Turned out beautiful. Thank you for sharing your process. Like with the world mold will be following your example
I absolutely love your videos! You make me feel braver to just go in the studio and play around sometimes. I think this is how we learn and grow as crafters and artists. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and experiments!
We learn from every experiment. I love the orange color and how it turned out.
I love the vase and I am sure the gift receiver will love it also. Love how in your videos you show the problems and how to solve them. I always learn something.
You have made me a “fearless fuser!”
Yes!!!!! You go!
I really appreciate the artistic journey, vulnerability and all! Sometimes your adventures and experiments are just what I need to get in the studio and just MAKE something, even when I don’t have a clear plan or feel inspired.
My thoughts exactly. Had the world mold for over a year watched his video and finally tried it. Have had a drop mold for over a year and now going to try that. Inspirational
It looks great! Nicely done!
Love the color.
Thank you for sharing your videos. You are so skilled (and brave) I learn a lot from you 😊👍
Thank you for sharing your videos! I am enjoying your videos and learning too!
Love it Jamaison ... even the part that fell through! A hand/home made gift is most precious!
super cool piece! You're so lucky that the fall through was in the front so you could save it. Nice job!!!
Luck was definitely on my side!
What a great Idea to use flower pots for your risers!!!!! I do love your videos.
Great first job, Jamaison!!
Good effort, love the colours and the final effect. Not done one myself, might give it a try now too!
Even though it didn’t turn out how you wanted it to, it is still a fantastic piece.
You’ve done it again! I am so amazed at what you pull off with your experiments! It’s beautiful and I think you friend is a very lucky lady!
Final piece = lovely!
Thank you for sharing. great starter piece
Love it! Love your videos. Keep it up!
I love ur videos. Please keep them coming. This was v special
U dared, n u were rewarded.
i love it! i wish my digital was large enough to do a drop. but watching you, i may try my manual kiln :)
Nice, and orange is my favorite. That is what makes glass so much fun. Experimenting and learning. Thanks, for the video, this is on me next to try list. I did a rake or comb the other week that turned out okay but I learned a lot in the process. Will I do it again, Yes.
I like it. I haven’t tried these yet but they are in my list. I’m more concerned about cutting the rim off and cleaning up the edge than anything.
Even with the uneven ends it looked great! I would have left it that way. It looked like an orange calla lilly. Interesting shape.
Verry good👍👍
It may not have turned out exactly the way you wanted but it's beautiful.
I think it's gorgeous! I would be in the same boat as you, not the proper equipment and not able to finish it off nicely, so haven't attempted it... yet! :)
The *original* plan was to use my dremel to cut the rim (which would have worked if it was thin enough and hadn’t fallen through). But it was way too thick for that. And then I was going to cold work the rim with grit on float glass, just like this: ua-cam.com/video/5x7nh-UA80w/v-deo.html
I may try drops again with this plan and see how it goes... a thinner drop would certainly make that plan easier!!!
wow!!
thank u for sharing.. i love love the color. if u had a different kiln like a top loader how would u beable to judge it touching the bottom?
Thanks! Great question... I really don’t know!
This is a very beautiful piece and I love your courage to try new things. Curious why you used the mold you did rather than an actual drop mold. I hope you never stop sharing these videos with us. ❤️
Good question! I have an actual drop mold but it was too small for the look I wanted to accomplish on this piece. I thought about making my own drop mold with Silkemat or even ceramaguard board or something like this, but that was an extra step too. May have been a better result in the end, but I had a deadline and decided to try this mold. 🤷🏻♂️
What thickness did the piece end up? I heard you say for every 3mm glass you can go 2 inches. I have a piece and I so want to give it a go but it’s 6-8mm thick.
Well, because it fell through, one side was very thick while the thinner side was about 6mm?
Love this! I'm building up courage to do something similar - do you need special glasses when you're opening the kiln at such high heat?
You do, yes. I can’t remember the name of them but I’ll see if I can find it. You can also do a Google search?
I’d buy it
Oh, I wish you hadn’t cut it! I thought it looked like a calla lily!
That turned out very nice! Congrats. The going through the mold unevenly could have been the mold, but could have been your setup not being perfectly level as well. Your kiln could be level, but your posts and other pieces might not be exactly the same size, so it could make your mold not be level.
Completely agree. And I was too hasty and totally forgot to check for level once I set my glass up.
Beautiful
Thank you
Did you fire polish after?
It was an experiment. It had inclusions and went into the trash.
Noooo
Can you share your complete firing schedule? I want to try this, but need a schedule.
This detail is in the video notes on UA-cam. If you are watching in the app on your phone, you probably just click the headline under the video. If on your computer, I think it’s usually in a gray box with “show more” under the video headline or try to click the headline itself. Thanks!!!
What kiln do you use?
I have a Jen-Ken profusion 26
Totally nerve wracking! My first was successful, next 2 not. Still learning!
It sure is a journey, isn’t it?
