I have to admit that I can never find Campbeltown Loch in Canada ( specifically Alberta) so when I was in Las Vegas and I randomly saw one bottle sitting there for $71USD. I couldn’t resist.
Geoff,great review! I believe my bottle is a bit more sherried. I rather enjoy this. Unfortunately it sells between 79.95-89.95 in my area(about 45 miles north of NYC metro). Seems to have developed over the past two months. Would rate this bottle 86. Likes it more than I expected to. Neal

@@Gwhiskyits correct Goeff. My 1st CL the light one is from 2022 and its exactly as you say in your review. The darker on is from aprox. Summer time this year. Its much more darker. There is more sherry its more matured more rounded and not harsh. Its quite delicious. Definitely better. 😁🥂🙋🏻♂️
$61.99 at a Total Wine in Central Ca. or $70 at K&L Wines (plus 8ish% tax). You were basically spot on. Right now in the U.K. this is $42.50 U.S.D. at the Whisky Exchange. This is certainly sitting on shelves here though not in great quantities. Totally agree about the price in the US and Ca has some of the best prices in the US for imported whisky.

Tried it for first time at the distillery in september found the bottle I tried to be far funkier(which I liked) than I expected but didnt buy it as there was just so many other bottles to buy. Recommended If you get it for a good price though!

I have the darker version, very good quality, especially with time in the glass. Springbank doesn’t need to declare un chill filtered or natural color, it’s a given

If adding artificial coloring is accepted by the SWA, then transparency about it should be mandated: you add coloring, you must include that info. You chill filter, you state it right there on the label. Transparency is best. Put it on the label.
That price is okay and there's a tiny amount of Campbelton-ness but it's not the real deal. You'd be better off buying some Glen Scotia if it's in your market. It's genuine Campbeltown.

I bought a bottle in uk for £39.95 at the weekend. Perhaps a bit of batch variation is a good idea as you get the Forrest Gump effect - variety. That is what makes whisky interesting but with the whisky in the bottle all coming from highly rated distilleries we can expect it to be pretty good irrespective of differences. Probably.
Hello Geoff, I really enjoyed my Bottle of Campbelltown Loch which was a much brighter Batch. I got this for effordable 50€ and it delivered what i expected. But... i wont buy it again because of the Pricetag nowadays. For the requested Money i can get a pretty decent Single Malt. For Example a Bottling of MurrayMcDavid from their Cask Craft Range. Yeah I think for 50€ it's a fair deal. I'm sure there are better deals out there, but since people are always on the market for something with a Campbeltown profile, I think this is a good one as long as we're not overpaying. 🥃

Here are some Springbank alternatives better than Loch. Amrut Fusion; Benromach; Glen Scotia and a multitude of others. Springbank is not the be all and end all in whisky. There's a universe of other good stuff.

I grossly overpaid for this one, and I knew that before I bought it. But this is as close as I will ever get to anything Springbank. We don’t have it in Oregon, so I went North to Washington state at a Total Wine store where it was priced at $89.99 before sales tax. Probably about $100 after taxes. I’m pretty sure I won’t buy it again, not at this price anyway, but I do like it. Never had Springbank, so I can’t compare it to that. My bottle is dated 24.11.22 and I do believe your friend is right, it has more sherry influence. BTW, I did get to see some Springbank bottles in person at this store , a 15 year old at $250 and a 18 year old for $425. So yeah, as soon as I win the lottery! 😊
That's such a shame. If you had been into whisky ten years ago you could buy any Springbank you liked whenever you wanted to. It cost the same as any other too. Springbank is not the Holy Grail. It's a very nice whisky but there also many others that are as well. Don't beat yourself up about it. The Loch is okay but comparable to other young vatted malts. If you want to experience some Campbeltown try some Glen Scotia.

Great review. Sounds quite similar to the (only) bottle that I had which I believe was a 2021 release. Bright, not much sherry, light peat. A good whisky for £35-40 but nothing worth losing sleep over chasing 🥃
When you say its sharp , how long did you let it breath for ? How much water did you add ? Did you add the water incrementally ? Lots of unanswered questions.
Check out Waubs Harbour in Tasmania - the world’s distillery closest to the ‘ocean’. Sits directly on the rocks of the Tasman sea at an old oyster hatchery in Bicheno. Talk about maritime you salty pirate man!
The darker batches are so good. I have the same batch you reviewed and a later dark batch. The dark batch is significantly better. Its like a baby Springbank 15. So much more Sherry forward compared to the previous batch. Its worth hunting
It's bizarre that so many people say they can't obtain Springbank whisky when both this, which is mainly Springbank, and Longrow NAS are widely available in most markets.
I think yours looks like Batch 2. All the subsequent batches are darker I was told by someone in the know that Batch 3 had more Kilkerran in it. I've also been told that it probably will settle down to a recognisable style (less batchy) in the future. More like Batch 3 and 4. I actually preferred Batch 2 and it does taste a lot different to to what most people have tasted in subsequent batches . The fact that it won the OSWA was soooooo predictable. Something to do with Springbank = Hype. OSWA = Springbank. I've always liked Springbank but its become a faith. Pour it over a wound mate; It will seal up! I like this whisky but only so much. It's by no means a must have on the shelf and I think £40 U.K. sterling is the absolute tops. More like £35. I think there are a number of very good vatted malts which I think better than this. I've been impressed with Noble Rebel for example. There's no doubt that there's some pretty young whisky in Campbeltown Loch and all the rest of the stuff that goes into the making of a batch has to contend with that. The truth is if it was released as a Glen Scotia NAS for £35 how much interest would there be? It's in the Springbank bottle though and let the hype run its course. There's some Springbank DNA in the Loch but that's it. It doesn't taste like any of the entry level Springbank/Hazelburn/Longrow range which are far better.
I've heard from quite a lot of people online saying that the reason a lot of distilleries don't have "Natural color" on the label is because they had "leftover" E150 in the cask when they put the distillate in. So for the sake of legality, they'll just add something like "no added coloring" on the website.
Dude I found two of these gathering dust at a prominent whisky shop in Cornwall and somehow people didn't get it so I got both at a discounted 70pounds! It's a good every day sipper. As long as you don't expect it to be like a Springbank 12cs or even a 10 you're good.
I picked this bad boy up for around £35 if I’m remembering correctly, like you I have a less sherried batch but I really enjoyed it but then again I always think the price of the whisky changes your expectations going in so perhaps I had lower expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Oh also, I remember at first not being blown away but I let it sit for around 6 months before coming back to it and much preferred it the second time round, it seemed to become a lot softer and more enjoyable, cheers! 🔥

22/11/23 Batch here - quite dark cranberry juice colour; au contraire, tippling this I declare it far superior to the 10 YO Springbank - shhh! Keep this one a secret! (I paid 54 euro)
It seems they change the recipes too much. I've heard some of the releases don't even have any sherry casks... I think I am going to buy Campbeltown Journey by Hunter Laing instead. It's cheaper, and if I like it, I would be able to find the same expression.
That's a very good option. The Gauldrons is a good option and 50% Sherry finish is a winner. I don't think you would identify it as Campbeltown in a blind though.
I see this around 70USD here... which is $30 less than Springbank 10, so while it may be a little over the odds, it's at least scaled reasonably. I'm not in the market, though. I'm slowly learning to avoid OSWA whisky as I'm not entirely sure the naked popularity contest it represents really aligns with my palate.

Too often the group opinion becomes a self-reinforcing feedback loop which decouples entirely from the quality of the bottle in question and runs wild.
Every batch is a different whisky. I had some and would rate them everything from 80 to 92. Got them for 32 - 36 Euros which makes even the 80 interesting....
The malting floor babies do give the whisky a special touch. Their delicate little hands turn the barley so gently.

22/11/23 Batch here - quite dark cranberry juice colour; au contraire, tippling this I declare it far superior to the 10 YO Springbank - shhh! Keep this one a secret! (I paid 54 euro)
$100 USD at Binny's in Illinois. Hard pass! A Kilkerran Heavily Peated was sitting right next to it for the same price so I bought it instead.

It seems they change the recipes too much. I've heard some of the releases don't even have any sherry casks... I think I am going to buy Campbeltown Journey by Hunter Laing instead. It's cheaper, and if I like it, I would be able to find the same expression.
That's a very good option. The Gauldrons is a good option and 50% Sherry finish is a winner. I don't think you would identify it as Campbeltown in a blind though.

I see this around 70USD here... which is $30 less than Springbank 10, so while it may be a little over the odds, it's at least scaled reasonably.
I'm not in the market, though. I'm slowly learning to avoid OSWA whisky as I'm not entirely sure the naked popularity contest it represents really aligns with my palate.

@@GwhiskyThey don't, and these days especially we have to be wary of falling into the FOMO trap with the bottles that ... go viral, for lack of a better term. Too often the group opinion becomes a self-reinforcing feedback loop which decouples entirely from the quality of the bottle in question and runs wild.
Every batch is a different whisky. I had some and would rate them everything from 80 to 92.
Got them for 32 - 36 Euros which makes even the 80 interesting....
