Roberta didn't write Killing Me Softly. Music by Charles Fox & Lyrics by Norman Gimbel. The lyrics were written in collaboration with Lori Lieberman who was inspired to write a poem after a Don McLean performance in late 1971. Lieberman released her version of the song in 1972, but it was not a big hit. She says the song of Don McLean's that really touched her the most during that show was "Empty Chairs" which is also an amazing tune.

I read more on the song that I had not ever found before. Apparently Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel were also Lori Lieberman's managers and had her in a terrible contract, and gave her no writing credit at all for the song. And even in the 1990's tried to say she had little to do with the song and it wasn't about Don McLean at all, but they had given interviews in the 70's saying the exact opposite. They really screwed Lori over and instead of just releasing her from her contract they sued her for $25,000 up front and $250,000 of any of her future earnings. These two guys were real A-holes especially Gimbel who was 24 years older than the 19 year old Lori and started an affair with her while he was married. Lori probably should have gotten at least 3/4's of the lyric credit and 1/3 of the publishing for the song, but she was young and impressionable and didn't know how to protect herself from music vultures.

Don McLean got the last laugh over Fox and Gimbal. They threatened to sue him if he didn’t stop saying the song was about him. He responded with a 1973 interview of Fox and Gimbal saying the song was indeed about him. They shut up after that.

This was nice and all, but it was live. The studio version - the one that held the number 1 spot for so long, was more powerful and beautiful. In this live version, she speeded it up for TV. Give a listen to the slower, more emotional, loving radio version. Absolutely wonderful!

I do so much agree with you Chris on that. Wasn't that on her album, 'First Take'? I met up with her music, when I was in college. I spent most of my free time, in the listening library with those earphones on. Wow! What an epic experience that was. How about 'Sad Young Men'? What do you think about that one. It made me cry.

Dammit dude... came here JUST to say the exact same thing. This song hit right when I was getting into puberty [ 11... early bloomer... ask the school nurse ;-) ] and the school dances were filled with guys running to the bathrooms after a minute of slow dancing. LOL Like Eddie Murphy asked: "Remember when you were in school and your hoohah got got hard for nothing?" And to paraphrase him from "48 Hours"... "I'm going through puberty... my hoohaw gets hard when the wind blows."
Yes... Rogue... this song is one of THE most beautiful songs, but listen and/or react to the studio version! Slow and wonderful.

There isn't a single song on any Roberta Flack albums from the 1970s that will not absolutely bowl you over. I have them all, they were staples of the soundtrack of my childhood, and I couldn't be more grateful to my mother for having them in heavy rotation, alongside Joni Mitchell, and other 70s greats. I don't understand why she isn't more revered. She will break you, and you will ask for it again and again.

"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a 1957 folk song written by Scottish political singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger, who later became his wife. At the time, the couple were lovers, although MacColl was still married to his second wife, Jean Newlove. Seeger sang the song when the duo performed in folk clubs around Britain. Other popular Folk songs written by Mac Coll included Dirty old Town and the Shoals of Herring.

Definitely the best version of this song ever recorded. Not even the Gordon Lightfoot version from a few years earlier can match what Roberta Flack does with this. You're right, she doesn't go for the high notes or pushes her voice. Singers used to understand that their job was to sell the song, not use the song as a vehicle to show themselves off. Roberta's vocals are soft and understated and it's easy to hear how beautiful her voice is, but she allows the melody to carry the song. She honours the beauty and romance of the song by holding back, knowing it doesn't need pushing. Her intent is to make us feel carried away in the moment and she does it perfectly. Like Bobby Hatfield with Unchained Melody, this is Roberta's song. Highly recommended is to check out her also performing Killing Me Softly, another song that she 'owns' that has been covered in recent years.
    If I may recommend a few ...
    Etta James' At Last
Etta James' I'd Rather Go Blind
Fanny's cover of Ain't That Peculiar, one of the first all-woman bands and they rocked!
For something very different, The Hu Band's Wolf Totem. A Mongolian rock band using traditional instruments and ancient throat singing

The original album version of this song is quite a bit slower, and has no orchestra behind it. It's just the piano, a bass, a drum set, and Roberta's voice. It's very sparse and much longer, and the radio stations hated it. But it was amazingly beautiful, even more than this version. Roberta's voice was strong and full of emotion. It was like listening to a goddess with longing in her heart. If you get some spare time, you should listen to it. Make sure you have lots of tissue, and be sure to leave a LOT of time afterwards to be simply stunned by what you have heard.

Roberta Flack’s vocals are so mesmerizing and the song is so beautiful. I have loved her music since I was young and listen to it quite frequently. In answer to you question yes I have been that deeply in love since 1983 and we just celebrated our 40th anniversary on March 15th and are we are still going as strong as we were 40 years ago. I wish that everyone could feel this kind of love because it is a love that is priceless. Love all your reactions I have seen. Thank you for enjoying the amazing music of the 60 and 70 eras when it was raw talent with no auto tune with just instruments and their amazing vocals.

You picked another classic with this one. If i remember correctly it was used in the 70s Clint Eastwood film " Play misty for me". Have a listen to Gordon Lightfoot, " If you could read my mind".
