Primus is literally there own genre
Absolutely. There are plenty of other completely-unique-sounding bands, but Primus is my favorite by far.
Jon Richt completely agree
They’re actually goblin metal
*their. Also, I agree
Ya Basically
josh you are the fucking man
i see you on like every video i click on
+Soup ;)
Soup your gaming is awesome lol
Hell yea
Woah soup you are here??
Good......but....you can do "My name is Lars"???
Mateo Gonzalez OMG YES!!
I'LL LIKE THAT VIDEO BEFORE IT'S EVEN MADE.
I honestly can't even picture how that would sound haha but I wanna know
I came down to comments to request that exact thing.
PLEASE
THANKS
That bassline is very dirty.
Filthiest there is!
One would say it's....muddy.
@Cory Dejonge same
@Cory Dejonge same I saw a video of drumeo where he talks about double bass lines and I thought of this lol
@Cory Dejonge applies either way
The ending double bass kicked ass.
It's really a 16 triplet pattern - where each grouping of 3 notes starts with a floor tom and is followed by RL kick, you can do this with a single bass drum too, just will get a lot more power with 2 bass drums.
To me double bass in that part would have been actually playing the entire 16 triplet pattern on kicks - and adding tom hits on top as accents - just my 2c
Tim Alexander explains how he plays it in his instructional video.
He might even demonstrate it.
If I recall correctly he plays something very very odd
Like left kick/right kick/ floor tom
Kind of the opposite of what The sevenhammer said....
It’s been along time since I’ve seen it I actually have it on VHS somewhere.
But I remember thinking to myself boy that is whacked.
@@theseventhammer
personnaly for me that would be John bonham triplets, with two toms, one kick. More classic 😬
Perfectly blends with the bassline
Who would think the snare/high hat part is easy, that kind of timing defines good drumming. Anyone can learn speed...precision/timing is much harder. Great job, I'm definitely a fan of your playing....
I'm not a drummer, I play mostly guitar. But it took me a freaking half an hour to teach my body that damn drum groove on couch drums. I actually had to write it out and and stare at it to play along at 60bpm. That damn switch from snare and kick on downbeats to upbeats on the second half of the measure, while keeping downbeat hihats is tricky for my re-re limbs.
It’s very easy at first listen but the first time I went to play it I was like what the fuck is this, there’s a sequence of two kicks throughout the whole thing basically and it’s weird because the first sequence of the measure starts on one and the second starts on the and of 2 which gives a weird almost polyrhythmic feel
I kept time consistently within my first week of learning. I found precision a lot harder.
Well said Contable. That quarter note pulse is tougher to keep together than most would think. The more notes, 8th or 16ths actually help the drummer make the backbeat even. The more space between those notes is what is tough to keep consistent. Throw in those kick flams but keep the 1/4 pulse going is not easy either. This was very well done.
Simple yet technical.
......where you going city boy.....?
People are so impressed by speed and quantity of notes, but playing something with a ton of open room between strikes and making it sound good is infinitely more difficult than blazing through a song. Fantastic job man.
Tim Alexander's drumming style is hard to replicate, Will Forte did it PERFECTLY.
"This is harder than you think" couldn't agree with you more. Great job Josh!
He looks like a skinnier, shorter haired Danny Carey
Now I can't stop seeing it but hey I ain't complaining
Oh the hours I spent as a 14yo drummer in the 90s practicing that ending floor tom part and could never get it that funky.
This song is awesome, one of my Primus favorites
It's all about weirdness, uneasiness and a bit of despair, like... You're talking to this dude, Mud, and he's telling you some crazy shit he's done, and you can't do anything but stay silent and agree.
All the silent gaps in the song contribute for this feeling of being trapped with some possible, unpredictable threat, and that something really bad can happen at any moment.
The hi-hat on the 4th, before the gap between verses, sounds almost like a good, ironic joke. It's awkward, like it wasn't supposed to be there, but you cannot avoid it.
Great cover, Josh! You're great! Thanks for sharing!
Honestly, Lars was the reason I started playing drums ("And Justice for All" album). But Tim Alexander and Danny Carey are the reasons I want to keep going. Great cover!
Same!
that little part after the "where you going city boy?" is such a nice addition. The song definitely needed a guitar solo
Dude I can tell how aware you are of how receptive Tim is of his band mates’s input. Tim doesn’t play, he communicates. Well done man. Way to respect the art.
my name is jeff
Miika Hakala thank you
Please stop...
I will never unhear this hahaa
yeah
So is mine!!
This guy looks like he has an old car in his garage he’s restoring
Somehow...that statement seems accurate...
Yes! Wants a four barrel, but puts in a two because he needs to save money on gas.
I love the little notes you wrote before all the variations during the verses haha. Best Primus drum video ever
Nice avatar. I see ya. ;)
Used to love air drumming along to Tim with chopsticks and very loud cans when I first started playing. He does make it sound so easy and this is a beautifully controlled and accurate rendition. Well done Sir. 👍🏼
The double bass, tom, and snare part at the end is definitely my favorite drum part ever
I couldn’t agree more
Tim Alexander.....even his simple grooves are hard as hell.
Flawless BTW drummer.
Loving the primus covers Josh. You play them perfectly but then again you play everything that way. Thank you for the videos man
This is THE MOST AMAZING DRUM CAM!!! Dude that camera look makes it feel like im on stage watching my best friend play his bands set and I LOVE IT!!
Awesome cover of an awesome song.
Can't believe I just now stumbled upon your Primus covers! Herb is another one of my favorite drummers.
Perfect. So many subtle things. You nailed it all.
Love Primus, your covers are always so skilled and amazing to watch. One of the best drummers on UA-cam :)
I’ve watched this cover a number of times. Nails it!
Josh has become my new hobby. I watch his videos during the morning and then before I retire at night.I think he's the best cover drummer on UA-cam! Bravo Josh! 👏
I was waiting for this video, I love this song, thank you!!!
I absolutely love the little notes that you put into your videos
Dude. You did this SPOT ON. Very clean, I watch your videos every day man. Inspiring. 🤙🏻
i first heard this song last year on liquid metal and thought the drum part was such a cool thing so when i went back to school after the weekend i tried to learn it on the drum set in the band room and it was so awesome realizing how such a simple sounding beat is actually so hard. right after i showed the beat to my friend and tried to see if he’d attempt it and he was confused as well. awesome song 🤘🏻
Probably the best cover I’ve seen... the narration set it off!
Bruh, loving these Primus videos
A great example of something that's an essential component in the best drummers' arsenals yet sadly lacking from those of many modern drummers: restraint.
You nailed it, brutha!
freaking amazing! loved every bit of it
First time watching you , impressive , your confident and relaxed while sounding intense !
So simple but not simple with splash placement and accents. Just so fun to play. Crushed it
i love this song and the cover ! great job
That hit on the splash is so important and you nailed it. no lie
Fantastic cover!!
Bang my head so hard on this cover, awesome job mate
Great timing bro, awesome cover!
Thank you so much for this!
I FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG ! I have been waiting for this cover for ages
I can’t stop listen to this!!! The commentary is hilarious as well
Brilliant cover.
That last 30 seconds is mesmerizing.
Hit all the details. Awesome cover.
Yessir! Great mix too!
This is such a hard song to play accurately.
Amazing as always, dude.
Sweet shirt man, and you even placed the dyno beat bottom cymbal on top like Tim!!!!!!....
You've earned a new subscriber, man! That beat is too cool!
So glad you're covering Primus... Indeed, it's always a challenge, full of seemingly random, actually sophisticated stuff...
Well done! Sound us spot on
This was tight. As a drummer you need to know when to leave the extras. And Herb knows, that is part of what makes this song good. Sometimes drummers forget that they are there to keep the beat and make the song go forward.
Nice!!! That was a tough one to play but you made it look easy!
Dude you nailed the snare tuning
holy sh$t dude... spot on I love your videos
i've always like Tim Herb style so much...he's one of my favorite drummer of all time. "Tales from the punchbowl" is my favorite Primus album especially because of Tim Herb, he's so creative and many beats and fills are very hard to play. I was stunned right from the first track "professor nutbutter house of treats"...damn ! awesome play !
good job explaining why that "simple" beat is harder than most people think. It's not just about speed !
I love this song!
Freakin sweet Josh!! Sound great Like the part at the end with the tom and the double bass!!
what a song!! great job!
Powerful and precise, nicely done yo
I Remember hearing primus on the tony hawk soundtrack as a kid. Didnt really pay too much attention to them. Been listening more since seeing your covers. The lyrical aspect is definitely unique and the music is pretty awesome
Finally I've been waiting for this!
Love the captions dude!
Loved this song... tough on the bass.. but still sounds so simple. Even the drums, they sound simple, but if you pay attention closely, you will notice the creative composition of it. The snares, bass drum.. all in the right place, with some creative fill ins here and there which is not expected.
I thought that looked easy and then tried to air drum it and almost had a stroke...great work man!! Sounds so good
Great drumming Josh!!
You have given me a new appreciation for this deceptively difficult song. I can play it on bass, but goddamn...
Drum covers are so satisfying yet not if you dont have your own kit to play!
great cover, spot on. 10/10
I believe you about the verse parts being harder than they look! It took me a few weeks to get down the drumming to Elevator by Boxcar Racer and when I play this song I felt the same anxiety about the timing and rhythm haha. You made it look effortless! Rock on!
Love this! 😄happy
the linear fills where he matches the bass at the end are the best
Please cover To Defy the Laws of Tradition!
I would prefer "To defy the Lars of tradition"
I could and have listen to this song on repeat all fucking day.
Haven't tried playing it yet and can already feel myself trying to rush timing. This damn song is still filthy after all these years.
Now THIS is quality.
Sub'd for the ending.
That was great! Loved the notes on it, haha!
Nailed it. And thank you for adding the.....this is harder than it looks. I've said that since the album came out. Id be like, well then give that easy shit a try. Followed by lots of damn it's. Killer video
Excellent.
I wonder if the ending of this song influenced how Carey ended Schism.
imo he has a great style needed for thrash metal. He might prove a great asset to HUNGRY LIGHTS. It would be great to see them working together.
Right before you did the "this is harder than you think" part, I was tapping my foot and hands thinking..."This is harder than it sounds".
One of you're coolest .. man, awesomeness
Very nice!!
Nailed it ! That was sweet !
I love primus drumming. Helps the songs so much...to bad the half ass their live performance when I saw them this year
This is a masterclass in quality over quantity. Fantastic.
Tim has a great approach. If the drums are always busy, it leaves less opportunity for cool stuff.
Awesome job dude! I’m a guitarist but love talking drum details with drummers for some reason. One of my old bands did a lot of Faith No More and Smashing Pumpkins so our drummer introduced me to flams (on the snare). I’m also a huge fan of Danny Carey and Gavin Harrison.
This is why I love josh always surprising me with awesome covers. Digging the new foot can angle. For so me reason looks old (in a good way)
What a classic treasure !!!👍👍
Amazing
That was great!
Fantastic dude! \m/
nice job, brother. Primus, my favorite band.
