This is great! More Hermes 3000 repair videos please. It is cool to see Larry McMurtry's machine being worked on as well. How about a video of Hermes 3000 platen removal?
Well too late for that . . . . . All boxed up to be shipped back Generally only take videos of actual work needed or related process's His 3000 did need more than a few things attended to though
Thanks for this, Duane. I just had to remove the feet and bottom plate off my '58 because I accidentally locked it inside the case cover (again), and that is the only way to get to the spring-loaded latch (from the underside). Since this machine was damaged previously and reformed (the bottom plate was bent as someone tried to pry a the locked case open), it's a real pain to get the top green frame to fit around the lip of the bottom plate while also aligning the feet screw holes. I was hoping that I could remove the carriage and top frame, secure the bottom plate and feet FIRST, then get the frame and carriage back on, but those 4 screws on the bottom next to the feet screws will make that impossible. Good to know before I got it all apart!
Thank you for the detailed this and other videos. Very helpful. I have Hermes 3000 "boxy" (late 60s) and the bottom plate is affixed differently, potentially with hex bolts removed from the top. Is there any info or videos about shell removal for that model?
This was so helpful!!!! only question, I can't get the sleeve with the inserts to slide back on in the right position, it lines up slightly off of the flat surface...any ideas...
At around 13:15 you say, "connect this back up here which is a little tricky". What are you connecting. Working on mine, but may be missing that step. Thanks.
I knew you would have something to save the day! But a JUMP CUT EDIT - first I've seen one of those in your videos! A little Intimidating...but my poor smashed Hermes needs to be taken down, so I'm going to do it!
Thanks for this video! Mine is back together, but the carriage won’t hold position and makes a light grinding noise when I move it. What could be going on? I could send a video if that helps.
What did you end up doing with the loose front screws on the case? I went through the same procedure on one of my 3000's and found the same problem (which for a 60-year-old machine, is probably to be expected).
At 9:48 my machine does have a washer behind this screw and the other one, but they are metal washers. I'm not sure if they are original... do you know if they should be rubber? If so, I will probably replace the metal ones...
I don't do enough of these to know for sure, except I do know there was a rubber type washer missing, like a little O ring knowing Hermes there could have also be a small special washer too, not too critical of an area at least . . .
Thank you for this video. I recently bought a Hermes 3000 and my Tab Clear button was sunk...turns it out it was just a spring that needed to be hooked back on. I also have a problem where there is a ratcheting sound when returning the carriage after a line. One of the screws on the long carriage rack gear was missing (the screw was taped to the inside of the cover. I replaced it but the ratcheting sound remains. Do you have any idea which adjustment could be causing the ratcheting sound?
Well without being able to hear the ratcheting sound I really don't have a clue There is a return silencer that pulls the escapement pawl out during carriage return This is tricky and is part of the starwheel, small circular spring
@@phoenixtypewriter2136 Thank you for the response. I've made a video here: ua-cam.com/video/q4RCtZeNdPQ/v-deo.html Also, the alignment seems off, the tops off all my letters are lighter while the bottoms are darker.
@@deanhuff123 Looks like this got shipping damage, carriage is out of whack, ring/cylinder is way off, the reason why needs to be determined first, then possible solution or adjustments made to try to bring print quality back. Clicking sound is the escapement pawl, could also be related to shipping damage, again that would need to be investigated to the root problem to figure out the proper solution.
Same question! I have a 2nd generation, boxy 3000. I can't find the little hook that you attach the drawband to prior to carriage removal on my machine. Where is it?
Hello! Wonderful video, thanks for what you're doing! I have an issue with one of the ribbon spools being completely stuck and wd40 doesnt do the trick this time. Do you have experience with this and how to resolve it?
WD-40 is not a degreaser, it's not even oil, it water displacement chemical. Old oil need to be dissolved, then relubed, like an oil chance of sorts. But could be other issues, binding parts, springs off, etc . . . .
@@phoenixtypewriter2136 I thought I remembered reading somewhere that he had used a succession of 3000's over the years, and that this one came from Texas was a clue. Looks like he's pretty hard on them!
Hey Duane? I got a question for ya? Are you willing to sell a silencer clip or spring for a 1960s Hermes 3000 typewriter (curvy one)? One on mine broke and now I need a new one. I heard they could be made easily. But idk where to begin with that. By the way GREAT video. It will definitely be my guide for putting my carriage back on LOL! Thank you :D
I have the same question! Mine has the silencer clip issue as well. If you follow "Typewriter Justice", he's mentioned that it's something he's planning to work on and that he might even make a few extra for interested parties, but he hasn't gotten around to it just yet. Hoping one of you experts can share the knowledge and walk us through it.
Thank you for this. Received one as a gift and taking it apart to clean it following your video has given me a great appreciation for the machine.

Outstanding ! I think my rubber bit on the bench are the case attachment grommets.
Yup, found some that fit from an assortment pack of grommets from HFS

Looks like I was reconnecting the draw band (string), 3:15 is where I disconnect it

Not sure video will help, getting carriage back on can be tricky, hard enough to do in-person, harder to try to guide someone

They are suppose to have a small rubber grommet/washer
I found a small O ring that I squeezed onto screw that worked perfect
Thanks for asking this Carl. I'm in the same boat. I've got a 3k that still has the washers, but the rubber is hard on one, and degraded on the other.

@@phoenixtypewriter2136 thank you for the response. I will further investigate and see if I can determine what is out of alignment there.
Thank yo so much - this video was most useful! Is an Adler/Triumph Gabriele carriage removed by about the same procedure? Best from Norway
Is it the same or a similar process to disassemble a 2nd generation Hermes 3000? Thanks!
