Was hoping based on previous videos that the rust was containable, but absolutely gutting to see that it’s so terminal. Hoping that at least this XJ can help save other example examples.

Hi Mark. Gutted to see this. I did elude to this on the video when you said you were outing the STR for this car. I really hope you can work through it all and get it sorted mate. Looks like a very steep mountain of work. Still following.

No problems plenty of news paper and fiber glass stuffed in the hole's a good body filler and a good red lead under coat then a rubber paint over last for years.😳🍻👍

Sorry to see it's a bit far gone. If you replace it you got the same deal. Unless you spending 7 g. It's a mechanics special. Weld it up. Make your plates up yourself. Patch it in. Fiberglass the arches. It will get you through winter. It's worth money if it's got a test on it. Good luck. Don't spend no money. It's only labour and metal plate. 👍👍✌️🇬🇧

@MarksWheels yep time is limited these days. Speak with a mobile welder. That car reminds me of welding cars in my body repair aprentership 43 years ago. At home repairs laying in the ice and snow on the driveway welding up the streets cars . Getting the world rolling again. 🤣🤣. My vote is weld it up. Mechanics beater. Good luck. 👍👍✌️🇬🇧

I think you should weld it up Mark. It will be great content and if it keeps another old Jag on the road that has to be good 😊

The one thing that scares me on cars is rust I have sold so many cars in the past that I would have loved to have kept but after finding rust unless you can catch it before it gets bad even then it is a never ending welding and patching up it never bothered me any Mechanical problems engines gearboxes etc can be repaid or replaced with reconditioned or good second hand one the rest is just fit new parts as they were out people who live in worm dry countries do not know how lucky they are like in parts of America you see 40 year old pickup truck just used as daily drivers its mind blowing to us in this country.

Hi Mark it is disappointing to see the extent of the tin worm, but the right choice to break it. You would have to throw a lot a money and time at that car, best to try and source a better example.

  • @jonrollit623

I thought it was too far gone when you first showed the car!
agree you could save it but there is a huge amount of work for a car that won’t be worth enough to justify the effort when finished.
If you are doing for content it will keep you busy for ages!

Surely you can buy prefabricated inner arches and sills for the S3?
In any event, at worst case, an XJ40 is a lot more modern than the S3 and easier to work on. I love 🧡 my XJ40.

It is always sad when you try to revive a car and it does not want to play ball. But sometimes there is a reason, and there is always someone looking for running gear, whether it is for a Kit car based on an XJ6 or someone restoring another XJ6. All is not lost just because this body may not be economically viable.
As you said, it is probably worth more in bits, Dashboard, gauges, and I think the alloy wheels are worth more than you paid for the car. It all depends on your cash flow.
A good restoration of the body and you have a very good Jaguar. Time for some lengthy thinking and talking to some guys who restore Jaguar bodies. Take your time.
I once bought an MG Midget that you could shake hands through the body. Another body was available needing some new panels, wings , bonnet, boot,, floors. (Like Trigger's broom). Anyway, long and the short, it is like a new car now on a new shell. But it was not cheap, by market values, but it is as a new Midget.
You have a number of options, even if you take years over it. Dont do anything in a hurry.

      @MarksWheels  3 дні тому +1

Thanks for your comment. My Midget was the same and i love what that has turned into but that was build back before i had a mortgage and a child.

Rubbish, it's normal rust for any 80s car, it needs a good amount of work, but it's all sills , wheel Wells, valances, jacking points. Every 80s jag is exactly the same as this.

As we can all see it’s well past it’s sell by date, when you find patches on patches and some welds look like they’ve been done by a blind orangutan, (and God knows how much filler is in the bodywork!) you know you’ve reached the point of no return, your best bet is as you stated a parts car, Jags have always been susceptible to the dreaded tin worm, lesson learned take it on the chin and move on.

@@MarksWheels I'm 2-and-a-half years into rebuilding a rotten, ultra-mileage 2006 Peugeot Expert that's basically worthless, other than irreplaceable sentimental value to me. I'm probably not even halfway through it yet. Thanks to UA-cam, my welding and fabrication skills have advanced from rubbish to mediocre, which is a bonus.

I would consider this on "wider base" sort of speaking. There is a lot of completely out of logic YT channels out there, where people's are working on projects which by the way, will never pay for it self and that by far. Still they do it.
    Why?
Because of YT and the hunger of us somehow lazy individuals out there, hunger for unfolded story of fights of the underdogs against hopeless, mighty and hard fighting projects of all types and sizes. My most recent one is "Ship happens" but I have watched lot's of YT channels as Acorn to Arabella, Tally Ho and of course lot's of cars enthusiast's building nice cars from rusty ones, etc. etc. etc.
And.. some are making extra money while doing it!!!
