I think the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway would be a great Sideprojects or even Megaprojects video. Pretty impressive to divert small barge traffic out of the Mississippi by making a new path from the Ohio river to the Gulf Coast through Mississippi and Alabama.
Love your work mate. I would definitely like to see a Mega Projects video on the Chinese artificial islands in the South China Sea. What are their pros and cons? Are any other countries doing the same thing in the area or elsewhere?
I'm curious why the writers said no one knows the actual purpose of these artificial islands. The main purpose is completely evident, namely by planting the Chinese flag on these "Islands" China gets to claim the waters surrounding the islands in a cynical attempt to claim all of the South China Sea. Any military capabilities present are just to defend the artificial islands and serve little strategic function other than that. They've even tried to claim parts of Indonesia that were established as Indonesian territory several years before Chinese nationhood was established despite the island being populated by Indonesian people with schools, local government and police.
Area 51 is a test site for new military planes as well, like the black hawk stealth bomber and stuff all got tested there for the first time off record I assume. It's shrouded in secrecy because it's military technology that they're testing and working on

The Appalachian Trail goes through Mt. Weather for several miles. You hike along a paved road with barbed-wired topped chain link fences on both sides. A local described it as an "alternative government headquarters".
One amusing thing about the Chinese "Secret bases". Due to their location, they are in international waters, so anyone can legally be in the area. The US routinely flies aircraft in the area to keep an eye on them. There was one a few years back that the Navy released the video of. It was several minutes of the aircraft flying a few miles away from the island while the Chinese on the island were telling the US aircraft to go away and they were flying in Chinese airspace. The AC told them they were flying over international territory and would continue to do so. Everytime the Chinese garrison sent a message, it was a different person transmitting. One theory is they thought "Maybe his English wasn't good and they didn't understand, so we'll have someone else do it." After multiple tries, the camera on the aircraft was recording the poor E sitting in the back writing down everything. The new guy on the line went through the whole "This is Chinese airspace, you are in violation of international law, yada yada." Then, after a few seconds of dead air "............Meow." The kid writing everything down just started laughing like crazy while the rest of the crew were just looking at each other going "..Meow???"

Pine Gap. In "Alice". Mount Weather: close to home. Most has been turned over to FEMA. The Appalachian Trail passes by it. Every Federal Government and military facility of any appreciable size has a fire department and police department.
If you know about it, it's not as important as you think it is. The real ones are need to know basis bases. There are even bases within bases within bases or ranges. Looking at you White Sands.
depends on what you mean by "important" & yes, Pine Gap at least really IS "that" important. It's location makes it indispensible, without it, the US has no real time control over any of it's assets in half the world - at least if it wants to avoid hacking of them! Might be rather important to know if a nuke's been launched before it comes into your direct communications range too, don't you think? The US interfered in Australian politics, removing a Prime Minister from power because he threatened to close it down ffs! You think they do something like that lightly? Because of it's size & required location for it's purpose, it's simply impossible to keep it secret, but it's one of the world's most important "secret" bases. It does things no other base can do, regardless of how secret it is
Does anyone else think it's funny to think about a bunch of government officials staving to death after the nuclear apocalypse, because they didn't have any farmers in their super special bunker?
Very good. Would have been nice to see Diego Garcia (US/UK) and Pontrillas Army Training Area [PATA] (UK). Also, Menwith Hill (UK) appears to be part of the ECHELON network and there is somewhat limited publicaly available information.
Pine Gap is obstensibly a satellite and submarine communications center and is heavily involved with electronic intelligence gathering. It's suggested taht it is part of the US' nuclear launch communications system. The Soviets always planned to nuke it and was only one of the two or three Nukes they ever dedicated to targets in Australia.
I would love to see photos of undersea bunkers/Submarine bases. Which i know some have to exist outside of our movies. But yet during the whole cold war the peace and treaties and base intelligence sharing post cold war still we have never seen a massive under water/underland but attached by water bunkers which either can only be accessed by subs or hidden top side entrance. Which is such a cool covert idea. Especially with a hidden cave entrance with rock tunnels to get to the base in a sub and possibly even having a fake rock door.

Area 51 exists solely to keep other more secret bases out of the limelight. Look at Dugway Proving Grounds, other than being the U.S. version of Porton Down, nobody really knows what research goes on there.
Pine Gap's real purpose is actually well known in Australia. It's a submarine port for subs travelling along the tunnels from the north to south of the couuntry. We're not supposed to tell anyone that though, so don't say I told you
to be fair, Pine Gap is also kinda like that, as you approach, there is a sign on the side of the road, saying you are about to enter restricted area/exclusion zone, therefore you must turn around now. No fences at all in sight, just a sign telling you to turn around
I used to drive a school bus with a route up Mt Weather. It's beautiful there. The helicopter traffic that goes in and out regularly gets old though

As an Australian I can say that what goes on at PG is still very classified to this day.
I'd go as far as to say not even ASIO know however I'd make a guess the ADFD do in a very limited capacity.
Put me in for a "Please Megaproject me some Chinese artificial islands".
The documentary Independence Day confirmed that Area 51 does in fact house aliens and alien technology.
How many cuts are there of Simon rolling his eyes?😂
You said let you know if we want to see an episode on the bases China is building on the Spratley islands.
YES!!! 😀
Heard of pine gap. Top of your list hey?
Area 51 is just the face for another secret base with all the actual alien stuff
Probably not
Area 51 exists solely to keep other more secret bases out of the limelight. Look at Dugway Proving Grounds, other than being the U.S. version of Porton Down, nobody really knows what research goes on there.
Pine Gap's real purpose is actually well known in Australia. It's a submarine port for subs travelling along the tunnels from the north to south of the couuntry. We're not supposed to tell anyone that though, so don't say I told you
Huge bases with huge fences and missile batteries.
UK: Old farmer's gate with "keep out" sign on it.
to be fair, Pine Gap is also kinda like that, as you approach, there is a sign on the side of the road, saying you are about to enter restricted area/exclusion zone, therefore you must turn around now. No fences at all in sight, just a sign telling you to turn around
Plane didn't crash at Mt weather. It crashed at bears den. About a mile away across rt. 7 if you can rock climb can still find pieces
Let's goo!!
