What a great video I remember this rally so clearly and I was only nine at the time. I can still remember the words from the song 'never going underground'! Great to be reminded, thank you.

I'm sure I went to this. Was this the demo where the organisers hired a train from London? I was looking for the banner which I held with a friend but can't see it which is a pity..

The gig was at the Free Trade Hall, I believe, rather than the Arena, which didn't exist at this point. Amazing footage! Thank you so much for sharing.

Fascinating history. What an amazing transformation we've seen in 30 years.

Sadly, Labour and the Social Democrats/Liberal Alliance didnt have much to say about gay rights in the 1980s, beyond a campaign pledge to protect gay employees from workplace discrimination. Some of the far left parties may have supported full equality, but the mainstream liberal and labour parties didnt want to alienate voters. So, gay voters and their allies were going to get a lukewarm response from the left or a rather vicious response from the right.

Remember it well. I had just turned 25 years old. How things have moved on since then.

Wow, history here! Check the Queen of HiNRG, Hazell Dean, performing and showing support to the LGBT+. 🏳️‍🌈

Hazel should have a lifetime achievement award for all she has done for the LGBT+ community. She was there and never ever turned her back on us xx

Can a native speaker make a transcript of Ian McKellan's speeches (min 14 and min 48)? It could be used very well for today's protests. It's a historic document, too. For those who don't remember, he came out first on radio and then at this ralley in protest to Clause 28. He was just back from a hearing in the House of Lords (which he was a member of), where he was shocked that all the closeted Dames and Sirs (many artists are knighted) voted for Clause 28 and didn't protest against the law.

Great bit of genuine gay Manchester history! Are you sure that's the Manchester Evening News Arena? because it didn't open until 1995 and was called the NYNEX for a few years first.

Hi @bikerjon1 . I'm doing research about this protest for an event in Manchester. I was wondering, were you present at the protests? Or know anyone who was? It would be great to have a chat with you. Thanks! Ali

He wasn't a member of the House of Lords yet? My English wasn't that good at the time.

I didn't realise you weren't a native speaker! Your English is excellent! I first realised I was gay and not just an ally whilst hearing McKellen talk about Section 28 - it made me realise that the absence of information was the reason I had been confused and lonely. And how did I find his speeches on being gay and Section 28? I found them due to his wonderful rendition of the Shakespeare "Strangers" speech.
Another thing: Lord Peter Wimsey fans unite!😂

Hi Nick, I'm doing a short video celebrating 50 years since the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality and would love to use some of your footage. Would that be ok?
