Be gentle, aim to weave the hair together, and don't pull to hard to avoid breakage!

Ugh! I wish you lived close to me! I have super thick hair, so I know I could seriously rock some dreads, but I'm scared to let anyone around here do it cuz I'm terrified they're gonna mess them up. You do yours EXACTLY how I want mine. They look so awesome! 😭

I will do a full video on maintaining the whole head :) You can do it yourself, or go to a deadlock artist, who works with crocheting!
Trucker Chick I recommend the hat method to tighten the new growth
the growth wont be in dreads so get the crochet hook with a latch and go to the root and go through then grab the dread and latch it on to the hook and pull it back through

Very helpful video, thanks! I’m doing fine in the front now where I can see which loose hairs belong to which dread, but I don’t dare to in the back because of the loose hairs - how do you “feel” in the back which hairs belong to which dread without a mirror?
It's kind of a trust in the Universe kind of deal... haha I do my best to feel the part between the sections. At times it feels relatively clear where the strands belong. I also use a mirror when I can if the hair could go either way. Also, if it's on the border, it's the end of the world if the strands end up in the neighboring dread... :)
I've had my locks for 7 years now and in the beginning, for about 4 years, I kept up with hook maintenance and besides palm rolling, I haven't done a thing to them in the last 3 years! Aaaand now I really really need some maintenance! Sooo since you're so amazing at your own hook maintenance my question is, is it better to wash before or after hook maintenance?

Hey wow just found out how to leave a comment from phone lol oook. Anyway thank u for this vid. I do crochet method too and can NOT find one person who knows or wants to crochet Maintanience my locks. Everyone does interlocking and palm rolling. I’m going tomorrow to teach a woman how to do it on me. I can maintenance the dreads myself at this point but not the roots. I can’t see the back or the root well enough to decide which dread it goes in etc. so expensive so I’d like to know how to do my own roots. This is first vid I have EVER been able to finds this info . So THANK YOU. Ps. I’ve gone two times to Black Salons and they promise they can do crochet method and at end they did interlocking!!!! So my dreads are like 2 diff textures. It’s hella mess now. Do u have any tips on how to fix those interlocked (looped hair now bumpy ugly) sections?

Pedro you mean loose ends that look kind of brushy? Or do you mean blunted ends?
@@respectfullymama blunted ends in my opinion look much better and cleaner,you earn respect for havin blunted ends. The way to blunt your tips it can be done by a crochet hook but i don't recommend using the crochet hook for anything else except pulling the loose ends in.
@@nosleepdigital Hey! Thanks for stopping by. Yeah, I've been back and forth on blunted vs loose. Kind of depends on the mood and the look I'm going for. Soft ends sometimes look nice, blunted are more neat, less boho maybe? I've had both and like both. Right now mine are blunted. I'm liking them! ;)

Hi Michelle! Thanks so much! For the second round my hair was quite short... Around 4 inches on top/in the front, and probably 2 inches in the back. Avani did a great job attaching to super short hair, I couldn't have done that myself. And they stayed well attached! My FIRST set with my natural hair - my hair was shoulder length... :)
CosmoHippie Oh ok. My hair is about two inches all over so I'm waiting a little bit. How long do the extensions stay in ? Im hoping mine will stay in as my hair grows n I can slowly over time cut them out n keep them long.

hey hey, thanks for the video, really interesting to see up close. I'm caucasian and have had dreads for a year now... ive had crocheting done a few times and it looks great but id really rather not do it forever... it's been about 3 months since last time i had it crocheted and there are tons of loose hairs... from your experience, will they lock up? I have pretty fine hair kinda like yours... also, i have tons of white "dandruff..?" flakes that come out when i shake my hair... any tips would be great. thanks!!
Hey! Thanks! Once my dreads matured a bit, the loose hairs get pulled into the dreads.The crocheting itself doesn't necessarily keep the hair in, the locking process with time is what makes the dreads look neater. Though my dreads were PERFECT. I'm not sure that exists unless you have really tight curls. I find that one of the reasons you can get flakes with dreads is because your scalp needs to be more stimulated - massaged (since you don't brush anymore), and also washing more frequently, and using a residue free shampoo can help (for dandruff or not). ah that's awesome thank u so much for such a detailed reply... i have actually started wool hat rubbing my head like twice a day and im getting really good results with that... it's kinda making my hair more rough and coarse ... and neater in the process. Still heaps of white flakes but I'll start washing every couple of days plus the rubbing and see if that helps. Thanks again!!
good stuff! just an update... i've kept doing it and the dandruff is getting better... ive noticed that doing it harder is better than softer... it makes the hair really knot up and feel super rough so definitely going to keep it up. im considering getting a crochet hook to try to pull in some of the big tufts of loose hairs... but we'll see. so far so good! update me with ur progress too :)

Not sure this will reach you since this is an old video but I was wondering how you figure out the sectioning at the back of your head where you can't see?
I did use two mirrors, to check it, but also did a lot by feel, using my fingertips to follow the sectioning lines... It's not perfect, but I managed to do it... And arms get sore! lol
What size hook are you using? I used a micro latch hook for my friends hair and her roots are super fuzzy. I wasn’t able to get her roots very effectively with the latch hook
Hiya! I use 0.5 mm crochet hoop. The latch is good to pull in the loose hairs, but then you need to crochet them in. :)

How long does it take you for each dreadlock root? I do it on my boyfriend and I feel like it takes me a very long time!
Nancy I think it can take from 2-5 minutes on average, but it depends on how long you’ve been practicing it - slower is better to avoid tearing the hair... Also it depends on how often you do it and how much new growths there is. How is it taking you?

The hook to pull strands through was from Sally's Beauty supply store, the crochet hook just online, the 0.5 mm size.

Hi Mariah! The best crochet hook to use is .5 mm. They're often not found in stores, but you can get one online!
I'm glad my dreads was big before I cut so I ain't got reattach 50 & 60 dread I only got 17😂

Nooooo! No gunky stuff! No product at all. Only crocheting.

No, hair locks together - that’s why we call them dreadlocks :) Before there were brushes and combs, hair knotted together and everyone had dreads...
And you only have to crochet the new growth at the roots :)

If my dreads had that much gunk in them- I'd actually consider lopping them off. But yours are not dreads I gather- they're just stick ons so maybe it's just the glue. Smug smug mine are all my own work from scratch. I can sit on them. I don't hook them- they do their own thing and they're ******* excellent. ☮️
guttersnipe haha no, there is no glue. I crocheted on extensions, and since then cut them off. My own original dreadlocks had some stuff in them too, it’s pretty normal. Skin cells and all... I do my own hair dreadlocks a lot better than the extensions! They’re almost down to my butt now. :) Peace!

I think it's all relative haha neglect method vs crochet. :P And those with super curly textures don't have a lot of fly-aways, so their's look quite neat.

The word Dread comes from the word dreadful which means causing or involving great suffering, fear, or unhappiness; extremely bad or serious. It comes from the English White people that called Black people's hair dreadful when they came off of the slave ships and their hair was matted down and clumped up from being on the ship for so long with out adequate showering and malnourishment. When you call them dreads it is a reminder of that terrible time period. If you are gonna give tutorials and wear the hairstyle, please respectfully call them LOX or LOCKS. Leave the word "Dread"out of it, unless you feel that way about your own hair. Thank you!
