- In this animation we will briefly look at one of the ways starship can get to Mars. We will also compare earth to mars and see how many similarities the two planets share!
Please keep in mind this animation is a brief overview of the physics and of the orbital maneuver required to get to mars.

Very good video, a huge misconception for non-space nerds is that you literally fly straight to Mars, or the Moon, when you want to get there. It's great to have short videos like this that helps people comprehend just how many variables there are to consider

The 6-month transfer described in the video is not actually the minimum delta-v Hohmann trajectory. The Hohmann transer would take about 9 months. The 6-month transfer already has a trajectory that intersects rather than touches the Mars orbit. The reason the 6-month transfer is favored for a manned mission is that it allows for a free return in case something goes wrong during the mission and the crew decides to return without landing on Mars.

I suggest you look into the tyranny of the rocket equation on why adding delta-v isn't a simple answer.

So Musk's plan hinges on something that hasn't flown successfully as of this date using the most fuel-efficient orbit it can and having to burn a ridiculous amount of fuel to slow down. And even with orbital refueling, you still have to get that fuel off the ground.

Why would anyone want to live on Mars, though? Leave the exploration of the red planet to robots.
Earth is the birthplace of humanity, we were not meant to end here - im not a huge believer in mars colonization, but i do think its the next best place to go

I have dreamed of living on Mars since I was 6 years old in 1965
