    Michael I disagree - you SHOULD make a video on wheelies, the main reason is that you are so passionate about them. Teach us, wise one.

      I saw him a couple of days ago mentoring a rider in the fast group pulling a wheelie past the other riders on the pit straight at Donnington he's a cool rider.

    I would have to agree as the GSXR-750 as being the 911 of motorcycle’s. Its been there since year dot, everyone knows what a Gixxer 750 is and importantly what it represents…. speed, style, functionality looks, and huge performance. But most of all it IS the bike that started the whole sport motorcycle shebang before all other manufacturers worldwide followed. So yes I agree the Suzuki GSXR750 IS THE 911.

    Ducati 900ss is the 2 wheeled 911. Been there since the 70's. Good for both road and track. Even changed from aircooled to watercooled.

      Nailed it! Much like the 911, they also went through a less desirable appearance stage in the early 2000's, as did their superbikes too with the 999 for that matter.

    I agree on Yamaha. Invented monoshock rear suspension, ypvs, exup, 1st bike with ABS- (FJ1200). Aluminium frames (Deltabox). Reverse cylinder TZR250, the YZ400F which was the first competitive 4 stroke MX bike

    My shouts for motorcycle 911 would be either the Ducati SuperSport or the Honda VFR… both have real racing pedigree and both have (like the 911) taken a turn towards comfort.

    Dear Neevesy, I would strongly recommend that you try out the 3M 1100 foam ear plugs. I'm retired now but for 42 years I worked in a screw machine shop and I wore these ear plugs every day. I am still riding motorcycles and I've tried a lot of different ear plugs, and I keep coming back to these 3M foam ear plugs. Use them once and throw them away, inexpensive to buy... I've even tried to wash them and use them again... doesn't work. I've tried going to a larger size foam plug to get a better seal and found out that they will fit ok when you first start out but as my motorcycle ride progressed they started to back out of my ear canal, super annoying to have to keep pulling over and re-seating my ear plugs. So going over size on the ear plug, doesn't work in the long run. Love MCN and your articles keep up the good work. Your current series remembering sport bikes of the past is great. Wish I never did sell my 2004 Suzuki GSX-R 750, I regret it every time I think about that bike. I'm riding naked bikes now and Adventure bikes ... body is too old to deal with sport bikes and the local roads will absolutely hammer you if you don't have a cushy suspension on your bike. I'm 71 years old now and my goal is to still be riding motorcycles into my 80's if I last that long.

    You have to say the 911 equivalent is the Goldwing, as they are both opposed-six layouts, and both are designs that shouldn't work, but R&D perseverance over decades has made them buck that trend. Both genuine legends.

    The 911 is the benchmark sport car. The fireblade has always been and is still the benchmark superbike. That's just the way it is and always has been. And no I do not own one I have a busa and an Africa twin.

    Speaking of iconic value, I think the only 2-wheeler comparable to the 911 is the Vespa. Born in 1946, over this long period it has grown bigger, more comfortable and liquid-cooled with automatic transmission. The same evolution that today divides Porsche purists from contemporary Porsche lovers. I agree with you about how the BMW GS is an iconic and successful product, but I think even closer to the brand philosophy is the BMW RT, in production since 1979....

    I agree with Neevsey. BMW with it's boxer twin would come closest to the bike equivalent of the Porsche 911... Ironically both German😉. The air/oil cooled boxer for much of its evolutionary history has remained the same. No, I'm not a BMW fan boy. Boxers aren't for me, but who can argue about their ability to perform as well as they do? Perhaps there's some witchcraft about the horizontally opposed engine🤨 😄It just seems to work so well.

    Hi Micheal, i wonder: why the Honda VFR didn't come out as the 911 equivalent? the V4 engine is (was) quite unique on a road bike and on the race scene still lives today in motogp after the superbike era in the '80s and '90s. What do you think? Also in general about the VFR history and evolution \ possible future?

    Ear Plugs - I use 3M EAR disposables, but I put the used ones in a mesh bag and throw it in the wash. They come out as good as new.

      I use Etymotic ER2XR earphones. The isolate the noise very well and you have the option of listening to audio if you want.

    Hello Michael,
    Think you hit the nail on the head with the 911 GS answer.
    The inspiration for the BMW GS (and BMW's actual GS) won the Paris Dakar Rally in the 80's a number of times and I believe the 911 managed it in 1984? Sporting companions in this respect I guess...
    QUESTION - have you ever read one of your reviews when published and thought "I've now got so much more to say - or different to say - I so wish I could go back in time and rewrite... "?

    If you forget the racing pedigree. The bike equivalent of 911 has to be the Ducati Monster. As much of an icon and as many different versions produced along the way. But maybe I’m biased because I own one. Nice vid as ever.

    Good call on the boxer in that , like Porsche with the 911, BMW wanted to get rid of it, but couldn't due to popular demand. Porsche must be thanking the digital gods every day for making rear engine less kill-ee.
    As to ear plugs - I use the foam ones too. After years of struggle, I actually looked at the youtube video by 3M describing how to insert them. Changed my riding world. My naked is much quieter than my tall rider. Who knew.

    Re ringing: I had a Schuberth and it did exactly the same thing, even with plugs in. I binned it after its first long trip out, went back to HJC (no plugs) and all has been fine for years.

      I hate Schuberth! They spend a fortune on advertising… I’ve had three, each time hoping that they have solved the issues !!
      They leak. Schuberth are in my opinion dangerous.

    CBR600… started in the 80’s, basically the same formula all the way through and gave us a final curtain call with the RR. Won everything out there as well.

    Considering how much the 911 has evolved in displacement and cooling system, you could go CB750 -> Fireblade. That gets you back to 1969.

      @@altergreenhorn Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki all had a 750cc inline 4 UJM that dates back to the same year, 1969, as the Honda? He's trying to get back to the sixties where the 911 started.
      If you say Ducati you're missing the point of what a 911 is. I know everybody who knows two things about motorcycles says it, but Ducati really is more the Ferrari of motorcycles. The Japanese bikes were always a much more accessible, streetable and friendly ownership experience, as the 911 was over Ferrari.

    Since they've produced the MX bike, it's got to be trumpet for me. My dream bike as always the speed tripple, which ie owned. Daytona for the super sport, mx for the off road, tiger touring, and the new 400 scram for town. Lovely

    Interesting what you said about ear plugs. I bought some expensive custom made plugs having got swept away with the sales lady’s hype at a bike show. Yes they are really comfortable but they were absolutely useless with the wind noise. I use the yellow and pink sponge type plugs all the time now and they are way better for me. If fitted correctly there’s almost no wind noise.

    Before you said GS and as soon as I heard the question, I took said GS. I believe there was a single piston 650 rotax powered little GS perhaps a Dakar edition back in the day. That was the first one that came to mind.

    The 911 of the motorcycle world is the triumph street triple. Great performance on street or track. Derivative of the daytona which has racing pedigree. Also shares basic engine construction with current moto2 bikes. Long history of small improvements and general praise and respect in the motorcycling community including often being the benchmark of its class. And its affordable. Plus it looks almost exactly the same as it did a decade ago and not that much different from the original. GS is a great answer too

      Close. But Hinckley cannot hold a candle to any 100% Made In Japan motorcycle. Assembly, component and all round QC is the domain of the Japanese. I've looked very closely at Triumph triples and they absolutely do not measure up to my standards.

    Saw Nicky Hayden do a wheelie at 180 MPH while holding a peace sign with one hand down the back stretch at the Indy Moto GP years ago, never got it out of my mind! What the thrill. I'm scared to death to do a wheelie on my SDGT however. Love the videos, keep 'em coming.

    Love the channel! First time ever commenting on a video, but felt this channel deserved it.
    Re: the 911 of the motorcycle world. Absolutely agree with the many of the answers so far, and certainly the GS has many parallels (German, boxer, air/oil then transitioning to water-cooled, initially fairly minimal and basic but increasingly luxurious and heavy, conceived and sold by marketing-led organizations with a near-limitless list of pricey options mostly on image to urban professionals and dentists on image and "heritage", whose impressive capability will be used mostly for short Sunday rides to the local independent over-priced coffee shop..). Ok, apologies, got carried away there :)
    But I'd argue there's a good case to be made for the sporting Ducati large twin.
    Some might argue that's closer in many ways to the small mid-engine Ferrari given its Italian heritage and similar evolution over time, but that doesn't have the level of racing success, the number of road/track/race variants, the aspirational but just-about-affordable-to-the-every-person status, and so on. Conceived and rising to prominence in what was likely the golden age of homologation/production racing 1960s-70s, it continued production through several iterations but nearly uninterrupted through the '80s. Attained near-icon status in the 90s with the 993 and 916, only to be replaced with what were initially unloved reboots in the form of the 996 and 999 respectively but which have increasingly become appreciated as necessary and ahead-of-their time. It's transitioned from air to water cooling like the GS, but is a more sporting vehicle by nature.
    Nowadays, both are still for sale, still semi-aspirational, fast, sporting, yet daily-usable vehicles with a whiff of "special occasion" about them that cause you to turn your head when occasionally spotted out on your daily commute.

    Even though, not a sportbike , when you were talking about the 911 equivalent, the R69S-R100S to current R1250R came to my mind and yes maybe the GS makes more sense. Also I'm happy we have variety of choice for bike manufacturers, but since I like dirtbikes and fast nakeds and supermotos and ADV bikes, it would have to be KTM for me. They also "make" ok-ish emtb's too so that even better. Long time fan, please keep doing your thing. I'll be watching!

    Thank you for your comments on question regarding tips on my riding style due to injury. Appreciate your advice and will definitely watch the videos you mentioned! Also, sorry my question was not well written, I was multi-tasking when I wrote and did a bad job. The injuries are co nfined to my lower body so your advice will definitely help. I do do track days so thank you again and take care. Really enjoy your videos and your content!

      Leg strength and flexibility is key, alongside core strength. Despite a spiral fracture of the femur, I was able to rehabilitate to fix the reduced strength and flexibility though obviously not fun.
      Training on bicycles is great though limited for ankle and calf movement which is completely different; bicycle none, Moto lots. So a combination is best for your training.
      When I was a rock climber I used yoga for flexibility improvement because if you just get strong the reduced flexibility will limit you.
      Be the best you can be and beat yesterday.

    Excellent advice as always! Great advice re wind noise, and thanks for the question sambolt9026. I suffer with that too, I also bought a Schuberth for that reason but was disappointed with the result. I also use the foam plugs (yellow 3M) and change them regularly. I also cover with a thin head band which also helps a bit. Maybe one day, some day someone will crack that nut. All the best, cheers Scott

    Having owned a vmax, virago and now a Niken GT, I agree that Yamaha has the biggest spread of bikes and isn't scared to bring new ideas to the market.

    Nice one again. I tend to agree with you on the Yamaha brand. I started off on the mighty fizzy. My last Yam 2 stroke RD400. Most comfortable Yamaha I owned was the XJ750 Seca. Shaft drive strong engine in its day and comfy as hell. Visited Spa went into Germany and came back through France on a fab 10 day holiday back in the 80's. Fun times.

    Thanks for tip on ear plugs Neevesy, just ordered a load form Amazon. I have more of an observation than a question. Recently you talked about leg-dangling and that it only benefits professional riders. However, on the road I find that some corners can benefit from a dangle which helps with two things, balancing the bike especially when there's a bad camber, and getting your body position right. I've taken on your tips for body position which has helped loads....I do hang the lower part of my body off the bike on the road because I like the riding style and want to develop the muscle memory for when I'm track riding. Recently bough an MV supervleoce which was influenced by the vid you done on it, youre right - it does sound like shards of breaking glass :) cheers and loving the vids thanks v much.

    The Yamaha XSR 900 from 2020-2021 is my choice as a 911 equivalent. I chose this above all others. It is the best analogy to the Porsche 911 from every aspect I can think of. Cheers!

    Noise testing. Ring your local circuit. Mine is Croft. They said pop along when something is on and the nice man tested my gixxer for me, even though it was a car event on. They are more than happy to help usually.

    great vid as always..... just a quick one on ear plugs. Makes a massive difference how you put them in your ear. I didn't think it would make a difference but it really does. had to do a course on 'Noise' at work work. So a quick google should help you a lot... :)

    For me, I always thought of Honda Hornet as the 2 wheeled 911, probably because of the round headlight on the first gen. But if you think about it, it's a practical sport bike for the street, there was a smaller and bigger engined one, there are faster and more hardcore bikes but you don't really need more and its engine evolved questionably for some making the old fans consider the early ones more desirable 😄

    Hmmm, favorite brand, started with honda cb 750, had a suzuki kettle, rode kawasaki gpz900r, but yamaha is my top brand after owning fj1200, thunderace, and 2 r1's that i still ride. love them!

    Regarding the noise. It’s the buffeting that creates the mist problems. Neevesy is spot on. If you can get full clean air on your helmets it will lower the volume. Also a pair of ear plugs that only cut the high pitch noise and allow the engine, traffic, and intercom sounds in are really good. No Noise and Pinlock are pretty good.
    If you’ve surprisedly developed ringing the get to an ENT, it could be a middle ear infection, fluid etc.

    Hi Michael, thanks for another enjoyable q&a session. Your videos have brought me to actually riding motorcycle after watching it for years. I love road trips and also enjoy cleaning my bike, but I can’t figure out how did you clean and lube your chain without a bike stand on a trip? And do you have any brand or type of bike clean/lube product recommendation? Look forward to your next video!

      Unfortunately you picked the circuit that uses a noise sensor on the track for ride by checks. So static tests are usually not available there.
      Mallory Park or Silverstone worth checking...

    I think there is an equivalence between Porsche and BMW they both had an air cooled boxer engine that they wanted rid of. They tried to replace them (924/944/928 and the K series) but the customers pushed back so they've just kept developing them with liquid cooling, turbos, variable valves etc whilst using "cheaper" models to fund the development.

    Hi Michael. Thanks for these videos. I'm learning a lot. I have a tyre question. I've always understood that tyre tread grooves are to help disperse water. Running from the centre to the outside as the wheel rotates. It's taken me two years to notice that motorcycle front tyres run the opposite way round. I was wondering why? Thanks.

    Suzuki, they have an amazing line that going yeaon, they are all 80%, but a good base.. and hard to beat as a package.
    Sv 650, drz400, dr650, gsxr750, gsx 1000gt, v strome, bandit, maruder, etc... nice philosophy, and amazing aftermarket...

    Aprilia RSV4 is my vote for 911 equivalent. Although it doesn't have that long history (started on 2009), but basically we have the same engine until now (albeit there are smaller improvements inside the engine, and the increased 100cc displacement). The same could be said to the chassis although they changed the swingarm on the latest generation.

    Biking equivalent of the 911… it has to be one that has made the transition from air to liquid cooled. I like the Ducati Monster. That’s certainly been around a long time not. Certain Suzukis as well. I think it’s got to be a BMW though. Horizontally opposed as well as being German and air cooled. The current r nine-t fits. Similar to the end of the line 993 gen 911. The GS fits as well and brings the anachronistic boxer twin bang up to the present while being as desirable as ever.

    Given the different engine powers and capacities the 911 has been available with, you could argue that the GSXR600 and 1000 are evolutions of the GSXR750.

      I agree. There is no point focusing on the 750 alone but instead just generalize with the GSXR line as the 911 has come in so many varieties and engine configurations over the years. The direct link is one is a sports car and the other a sports bike. The GS line is a different animal so the comparison to the 911 is fuzzy at best.

    What other bikes have had that same reaction ?

    911 motorcycle, two bikes come to mind; Ducati Monster and Triumph Street Triple. While the Ducati is not a race bike: somebody must be racing theme somewhere and the Street Triple is a hot ride that continues to evolve

    Hi Neevesy, thanks for all the great videos and fantastic information. I remember you mentioning in an older video (possibly on MCN) that you don't tend to wear leathers anymore, at least not on the street, because textiles are so good these days. Can you give us some guidance on the textile gear you prefer? I see a lot of Adventure textile gear available, but less stuff for sport bike riders. I ride a gsxr750 (L19) here in BC and am looking for good textile gear fits well (ergonomically and aesthetically) with riding a sports bike. As a very experienced rider I'm keen to hear your preferences. Many thanks in advance and please keep the videos coming!

    Instead of earplugs I ride with noise cancelling earbuds - specifically Sony WF-1000XM4 - and they're just as effective as high quality foam plugs, but with the added benefit of audio pass through for loud noises like horns and sirens, plus i get excellent quality music at safe volume levels!

    Quietest bikes I've ridden are naked bikes. Smooth air around your helmet beats almost any windscreen.

    Thanks for your great videos. Not sure you can make the comparison as the bikes have remained "Independent " companies. A modern porshe is just a vw/audi clone designed to appeal to a completely different buyer than a proper porshe. Great discussion though as always.

    Hi Neevesy, love your channel and especially your tech talks I'd love to hear your opinions on the different engine layouts, V4, i4, triples, V-twins and paralel twins... and their typical power charateristics and the advantages/disadvantages of each.... what is your fave engine type... and... actual engine?
    I ride a 23 Mt09 SP and find the CP3 a great match for a naked streetbike with its broad powerband, relatively short gearing and not so far off litre bike performance to 100mph. You just draw a lot less attention to yourself compared to a 15k rpm sport bike,
    although I must admit... if I did trackdays I think I'd prefer an inline 4.
    Bonus question - Can you tell us more about your 1000rr's twin cylinder cut set up and how it benefits rideability.... Is it purely a torque reduction advantage or does any part of the advantage also come from half the amount of power pulses allowing the rear tyre time to recover grip.... not unlike why Suzuki made the first big bang engine back in 92?

    Hi Neevesy,
    Regarding the video you posted a few months back (the GEEK OUT) on suspension. Can you give us any insight onto the symptoms of suspension setup? Like: when you have your sag set right but the bike is pushing wide on track. What do you need? More compression? Less compression? More rebound?
    I know this is the grey area of bike handling but are there any general rules?
    I have an S1000RR gen3 with the additional front 2D sensor for track days. I have done less than 10 days in novice but live close to Brands so will be doing more.

    Few years ago when i was a new rider i was going down a hill, right hand bend approaching a roundabout, as i got to the roundabout a guy on a green Ninja was coming off the roundabout, i gave him a wave, as i did he popped a crossed up wheelie (on his uphill left hand bend), as the wheel was in the air and crossed up he waved with his left hand and screamed up the hill still on the back wheel, i let out a loud hearty "Fu*k me" inside my helmet 😀

    911 bike equivalent… a lot mentioned here are not sports bikes so cannot be included. Being a Ducati 998 and 1199s owner id love to say the 9XX series but since those stopped in 2004 doesn’t count either. I’d have to say the Fireblade is the closest comparison

    Hi Michael, thanks for great content again. I keep watching every video without skipping a second.
    I am 32 and next year I want to start dedicated track riding with a 600 as in the streets the speeds that are exciting with the mt10 are becoming illegal and dangerous. Next to that I was also planning to learn and hoon my skills with a cross discipline, which should be cheaper and easier than a full track day. I just got a 3 day MX course in Barcelona and was wondering which of the three would be best for cross training. Motocross, supermoto or flat tracking? I am aware pros train with any of them but was wondering your take. MX in these three days felt very exciting, very physical and demanding a completely different technique. Tbh I could not feel 100% confident despite the excitement of a reduced grip situation as mx tents to be the most injury prone. Would MX be the best one to test limits of grips and improve reaction times with physical fitness or am I too old for it and would it be better that I lean more towards to supermoto or flat tracking?
    What would be your recommendation?

    Hi Neevesy, had many hours of entertainment from both this channel, and the MCN videos so thanks for all you do.
    I'm wondering what the best beginner friendly UK track would be, as I get faster and more confident with fast B road riding I'm thinking it's a great time to christen my 08 ZX6R and do my first track day.
    I'm based in sussex so logistically thinking either brands or thruxton but don't mind travelling further. Love to know what you recommend.

    One difference between naked and faired bikes is temperature. My GS is good from 10 to 25 degrees C. When my speed triple is cold. I usually drive the s3 when its above 20. As GS is too hot and s3 is perfect. The difference is close to 10degrees Celcius for the rider.

    The wind noise bit hit me so hard. I can’t fkin stand the buffeting noise some screens make at like 70kph but i’ll gladly take the smooth woosh that clean airflow provides at 100kph+ (looking at you Yamaha T7 with your slim, short screen😒)

    Track day machine question: would you rather buy a 10 years old S1000RR thats has already been set up for the track (with good brakes and suspension, and a lot of nice parts) or a more modern (2020+) superbike, but still stock? Which one would deliver the best for a trackday rider?

    Hi Neevesy, Love the channel and always look forward to the next instalment.
    I'm a 67 year old great grandfather and have just bought a beautiful 2014 low mileage Fireblade, which I absolutely love. I also have a F750GS which I use for touring and longer rides. I'm reasonably fit, but find after a couple of hours on the 'blade my lower back and shoulders begin to ache. Are there any exercises you could recommend that would help alleviate the aches and allow me to ride comfortably for longer? I have seen a video where someone added risers and naked-style bars to their 'blade, but there's no way I'm going down that route - it would ruin the bike for me.

    On the Pirelli Rosso 4 front and Rosso Corsa 4 rear mix I have a variation on this.
    Ducati Panigale V2 need a new rear came with factory Rosso Corsa 2 tyres front is still OK! Will just changing the rear to what’s now available the Rosso Corsa 4 and leave in the 2 version on the front be a problem?

    Motorbike equivalent of the 911? Triumph Bonneville which can be directly followed to the current Thruxton RS in layout and styling. Probably the BMW boxer twins would count too but the model history isn't as linear.
    I think the big issue is there isn't really an equivalent to the "sports car" in motorcycling that goes back as far as the 911. There wasn't as much differentiation between a regular motorbike and a race bike, now there's much more defined styles of motorbikes.

    Hi Michael. If we put you on the road on a Yamaha MT09 SP and you pushed to 9/10th, do you think your clone on a monster powerful bike like a 1290 SuperDuke R/V4/etc., would be able to ride away from you, assuming same tyres and also pushing to 9/10th? Regards John

    Some kind of BMW boxer is the 911 to me. German and hasn't really changed in configuration in the last half century. Maybe the R model rather than GS, RS or RT. More like a Carrera though rather than a Turbo or GT!

    Yamaha have done a few left field bike in riding life . Xz550, tr1, tdr 250 ,trx 850 ,tdm850n gts 1000, to name but a fiew. Triumph trident i know latest one not so special .

    I think the 911 sport bike would have to be the Ducati top end sports bikes especially if you look at the V2’s that have been around almost as long and still in production (Panigale V2) and still wining races (British supersport.

    Another question on wheelies. I watched some videos and tried out their tips, but still I never managed to, or had the nerve to really crack a proper wheelie.
    I’m a shortie - 5”4 and I ride a heavy and long bike - the bmw k1300r. I feel the one of my impediments is that I am too propped up towards the front of the bike (due to short arms) and so all the weight is there.
    What would you say? Give it up?

    As a owner of both Platforms. 911 Turbo and The GSXR 750 both are timeless raw machines. and not a glorified beetle (side eye) Mr. Neeves🤨 Ok. they are both produced in a VW Factory and share the same parts. omg I have a VW!!

      I don't I'm afraid. I know they're pretty much bulletproof and make for a fast, dependable tourer. One of my friends has got one and loves it.

    Prices on the older aircooled models (pre 996) have sky-rocketed these past couple of years.
