Land Rovers have exceptionally good wading depth compared to most vehicles, but even so you can still hydro-lock them if you go barrelling into deep water like that. It wasn't a vehicle fail, it was a driver fail ...like most of them in the video.

Perhaps driving through floodwater should become part of the theory test for learner drivers since so few drivers seem to have the slightest clue how it should be done. If you allow water to to come over the top of the bonnet having first covered the grille which is where induction air is most likely to enter the filter you are asking for trouble in the form of a hydro locked engine. Water is non-compressible so connecting rods will bend or break or in the case of one we had through the workshop last week, 2 huge holes in the cylinder block.

    • @trainman665
      @trainman665 5 місяців тому +4

Ideally it shouldn’t be done to begin with. Most cars the air intake is behind the bumper at the bottom of the wheel arches.

You should not enter as fast as that. You only need to enter fast enough to create a small bow wave.
The driver in the red discovery entered so fast that the water immersed the entire bonnet and hit the windscreen. The air-intake is at the top of the engine bay, whereas the water level at stationary doesn't even reach the top of the wheels.
Massive drive error. Lack of experience.

The depth looked to be just under 700mm - that's the wading limit of a Discovery 3 and 4 and similar Land Rovers.
The Disco5 and the new Defender can wade up to 900mm.
Not sure about a Disco 1 and 2 - I think they need a snorkel to do that depth.
The rule - know your vehicle's wading depth and never enter water if it indicates higher, or are not sure - and - enter slowly and proceed smoothly. Creating a slpash can cause water to enter the air intake even if it is below the wading depth.

I’ve driven though 3 feet deep water, very slowly so that the engine didn’t take in water, but afterwards I had multiple problems. Water entered my gearbox differential, and it used to make a grinding sound. When I did hard left or right turns I had to also replace the tensioner pulley, bearing as that became loud, then had other issues with the engine. It sounded like a grinding noise at the lower part of the engine, so when more gets into areas it’s not meant to even if a car looks fine and it drives out okay you still have long-term problems with bearings where the engines won’t designed to have direct contact with water

The very least most of those that went through fast would need is a new air filter! I went through some not too deep water once, the engine was very rough after I struggled through. The filter was effectively blocked when wet! If I had realised the intake was so low I would have ripped it off beforehand! The intake on the next car I had was designed to suck the water straight from the bow wave!🙄

You'd think the environmental tanker driver would know better.
Professional driver, although a quick drive on a motorway will make you realise that professional means Jack Shit.
Dealing with flooding is probably part of his job.
But no, thick as shit, and if I was the boss of that company, I would certainly have a case of negligence against him.

If you don't know how to drive through flood water or you don't own a snorkel on your vehicle, why would you even risk it? An engine rebuild is not cheap.

First chap - went in too fast causing the front of his vehicle to be swamped and breach the air intake. Had he entered slowly and progressively he would have been OK. The guy in the other Discovery just before the Firebrigade got it spot on. He obviously had experience. Never charge into water like that. Creep in slowly and then accelerate gently until you have a bit of a bow wave, all the while keeping an eye on the bonnet going under and ready to stop. Ideally you should a) have checked the depth by watching other vehicles b) have a wading kit.
To do a crossing like this you need to know where you air intake is and NOT attempt it if it is lower than the water. Most the other vehicles that made through (including the police car) managed by pure luck that their car did not ingest water. The ones that failed all had “hydrauliced” engines. Even the council lorry thought he was invincible but wasn’t.

Tidy maroon Disco 2-shame that's it's been ruined by totally inept attempt to go through excessively deep water. Chassis box sections etc all full of water-definitely not good for long term keeping corrosion at bay. Yes,they will go through deep water, but correct technique is very important, but beyond a certain point, why put a perfectly good vehicle at risk?

I never understood the point in this. Most of these cars total out when flooded. What’s the point? I’m sure insurance in this country is wildly expensive!

You can’t spanner it through deep water you numpties, that Disco would have been absolutely fine if the old geezer had just slowed down. Don’t force water through the grill into the air box. My tip is that if you can hear the water you’re driving through then you’re going too fast
