Installing a vineyard takes some time, but not this much time! Here's the build of our little backyard vineyard, where we're planting muscadine grapes.
I Don't think we say it enough but your wife does great camera work, and makes great kids!
Yes she does, I must agree! I'm sure they're Good kids hehe
Thank you.
David the digger makes a stunning, brave, mechanical return.
Maniac commits genocide against peaceful micro-biome; forces children to watch.
@@jbitt And participate! It's horrible!
The young girl at the coffee drive thru liked the Compost Your Enemies T-shirt. I have never before been complimented for a T shirt.
We like the bronze muscadine as well. I didn't know it wasn't self-fertile though so i lost a few years of growing time before I realized I needed to introduce a different variety in order to get grapes. Oops. Now we're rolling!
Goodness, I hope they renew your lease!!
So far so good...
Dang. That is one permanent grape trellis. Putting the permanent in permaculture. Nicely done.
Man you're arms are really starting to bulkup, good on you getting in shape for the apocalypse. 💪
shine on you crazy diamond
The David the Good workout plan.
And here we have David preparing for the log toss... You got some serious work done there. i bet u slept well that night. Nice work!
Muscadine and scuppernongs…..ours are finally producing really well this year and it’s worth all the effort. Love them!
I'm so glad you are growing muscadines. They have been my biggest successful perennial and give me loads of fruit. I had to adjust from 20' of run between vines to 16' to fit my micro-backyard but got 4 vines in anyway. Well worth the time. I followed Greg Ison's pruning lesson on his channel and it has been a great success.
Ison is brilliant.
My favorite part is watching the auger do it’s thing. It made my back not hurt as it popped out of the ground. Also yer form was bonny-tossin the caber like a lad from the highlands.
Yes!! Those Scots make it look so easy
The camera work on your videos is just awesome. Even this older one.
Thank you.
David the Good is helping inspired the world with each project and video he does.
At first I thought you were putting in fortifications. Then I realized that you were actually planting apple trees. I see you went for the larger caliper trees. Good idea. They will start bearing much faster than the spindly little whips.
LOL!
Did you see how he removed the leaves to reduce transplant shock?
@@hughbrackett343 yep. Completely smooth.
Well done, and definitely worth whatever time you put in. That auger looks like what I need for my place. Putting poles in the ground here is one of those tasks that make me think hell is actually on earth. Thanks for the good show, David.
You bet. I was fortunate to have a friend with an auger.
My favorite part of this video, besides most of it, is the ending. "What's in the soil?" "It's best you keep your business to ye-self."
kudos to you that your children are so involved!!!! Kudos to you that you are such a great example to your children!
I planted 2 muscadine plants using the cattle panel system. It held up great during Ida (central coastal Mississippi). And I even got like 6-8 grapes this first year!!
Good work. I would like to see them.
For the Love of Grapes, Man!!!
Well, I'm wore out just watching you, lol. The DTG Army in action, BOO YA !!! Good job, pardon the pun.😎👍
Brilliant. You have built a hurricane proof Scuppernong fence. I very much enjoyed watching you and the kids achieve this milestone. (There is something deeply satisfying about building a good fence.)
Hi David looking good very nice 👌
Can't believe how the kids jumped in to help with the job, and so expertly!
They helped us build our houses down in the tropics - they're used to working.
I hope your kids’ grandkids appreciate your hard work!
Nice to see the family working and hanging together. We had 6 and now they’re grown. 😢
Good work.
I'm sorry, Joyce.
Love it! Great job! The prep is the grunt work! You shouldn’t have to deal with posts or wires again with that system! Awesome! 👍
Tossing a caber? LOL! (My daughter likes to watch Scottish Highlands games.)
That's why he had to cut them down. Regulation size.
The very first thing Noah did when he got off the Ark was plant a grape vineyard so he could make wine
Good idea. Just watch out for rotten kids when you're tipsy.
@marthale7 Root them!!!! :)
I'm totally with you on Muscadines being better than European grapes. They're so much tastier. And the fact that they're native is icing on the cake.
I enjoy overkill grape poles, as so long as you do it right, they will keep your family grapeful of your efforts for years to come.
A lot to take in with this video, the super cool jeep, the clay soil, David hefting giant poles!
I saw those poles in the background of your other videos I was wondering what they were going to be used for.
Always good to get more exposure to muscadines! We've added quite a few in the last two years and are finally able to enjoy our harvest!
Few things of note: 1. muscadines don't require fertilizer, but certainly do better with it.
2. muscadines don't make good grapes the seeds tend to make that an issue.
3. Great use of the posts, you shouldn't have to worry about the vines over weighing them.
This was a very impressive video. By far one of my favorite. Woo hoo thanks to you and your family.
My husband and I have so much respect for you!! Love to see your family teamwork!
Thank you - that is kind of you.
Hurricane Ida tried to flatten some crops. I can see okra, tomatoes, eggplant growing between the poles with a Florida weave to keep the hurricanes away. Annual crops between the perennials.
Good idea.
It's OK. They're in. Nice family.
Thank you.
i admire your resilience!
My daddy made muscadine wine all his life. When we lost him age 95, in 2012, I found a carboy with his last batch in it. Bottled it all up and brought it home. We have one bottle left.
Wow. What a memory.
DTG: You don’t need big posts.
Also DTG: I found telephone poles.
Never change.
I had nothing to do with this one. I had the right-sized poles here in the woods and the landlord said, "oh no, don't use those... I'm bringing some bigger ones." And there we go...
@@davidthegood Besides, they were dead and fit the holes that the tractor makes. Pesky wires! Ahh! Ah! Ahhh! It burns and makes me feel all tingly. Ahh! What do you mean the lights went out?
Started 1 grape vine a few years back just for fun. Got some grapes here and there last year. This year getting quite a bit. Hope to have enough for some jelly. 😎👍💥🌱
David, thanks for the content. We have 5 vines with 9 gauge wire at the 20 foot interval. Two years later we had to put t-posts near the trunk of the vines to support the growth. These aren't my great grandma's muscadines. I have one that has insane growth and fruiting (swamp water, compost, and a little alfalfa meal) that the wire was drooping nearly a foot even after tightening the wire vises. So the t-posts near the trunk have helped distribute the weight. I've jokingly referred to one as Audrey II from little shop of horrors. Hopefully we won't have to feed it meat. We should start getting ripe fruit by the end of July.
Nice job my friend I’m so proud of you keep up the good work God bless you and your family
Imagine how confused the archeologists will be when they find the remnants of your grape arbor- those grapes must have been the size of cantaloupes!!! 🌿
That's hilarious.
Everything is a hypotenuse . Haha . I love triangles!
I really enjoyed your video and content. Thank you !!!
Those steps look very well ordered to me, brother!
Wow that was HARD WORK! That'll make a man out of ya for sure! Jeez I just have a few Muscadines growing along my side fence lol
The fruit is good, but the skins are tough and the seeds taste terrible! Also, I caught that slowly slowly reference.. 'Good' work sir😉👍
Yeah, chewing the seeds is not good.
I think you might need or another wire halfway down those posts, you can get a double layer of finding out from the grapes… But you already know that 😉😉
I like the single wires for simplicity.
Its awesome your kids help i can't get mine to help me in the garden
That's sad.
It is not illegal to make wine for your own consumption but it is fun!
yes it is.
@@rehoboth_farm Where?
@@FreeAmerican oops. I thought she said "it is not legal" Of course it is legal to make your own wine. How in the &$(% would they stop ewe?
Another great video. I had to watch it again. I love the shot with the cordless drill stuck in the pole in sharp focus while you work in back just out of the depth of field. Great camera work. I also have been accused of overbuilding fences and using oversized posts. It probably has something to do with hurricanes.
A true RP prepper: "I can still have wine if I have grapes" #priorities
Wow! I know Dave and Guda!! Such a wonderful couple. They were gracious enough to gift me with a few plants when I was up there way a few months back. They recently cleared out their grapes vines. I wish I was there to get one. Great video and content as always.
Good job!!
David at first I thought you were putting in new beanpoles and I'm thinking a little overkill still a little overkill for grapes but definitely worth the effort
I don 't know what ur up to but i love. Actually i know what ur up to and still love it!
That's funny.
Can"t wait to see you again! You are my inspiration! Happy Labor Day!
Something about watching people engage in manual labor is, paradoxically, relaxing as heck. Sweet shirt, by the way! Best application of the Slowly slogan I think I've ever seen. 😎😎😎 Thank you.
Thank you. This was painfully slow.
My sister could use your caber-tossing skills on her hubby’s Scottish Renaissance Faire guild team LoL
You could build a little cabin on top of those poles in case the creek rises.
I saw possible support beams for a building also.
I use cargo ratchet straps to tension my grape vine cables.
I just leave it in place, put a few cranks on when they need them.
Good idea.
Jelly and raisins - yea - yea - That's ALL we like about grapes. Nothin' else to see here. LOL
A large pair of Channel Lock pliers work great for tightening those ratchets.
Thank you - I have some - will try it.
daves grape moonshine
That is what I’m thinking.
I want to grow grapes so badly but I'm already having a tough time keeping my dog out of everything else. Your trellises look awesome and I love your channel!
Muscadine Zip Line !!
not sure if you will see this but you might, you dont need the tool for the tensioners there is a square on the side of the gear and i believe a 1/2 inch wrench works or just use a adjustable wrench. thanks for your videos
Thank you
At first I thought you were building a mansion on top of these logs!
Grape Job!
Nice hat, mate
Davey the fungi killer tiller! ;) any excuse to play with a tractor! :)
Should have kept one pole tall and built a bathouse on top. Maybe next vinyard?😉
It's ok if "it" happens off camera! We can still see the wheels in your mind turning during the on camera times!

I've got more than one variety of wild grapes growing around the perimeter of my yard. I just leave them for the wildlife.
Someday they might share with me... we'll see...

Mine like to grow in the shade, under the big Oaks,
with just a peek into the morning sun.
Sounds like a nice life... 😎
Nice short 👌 accent on point
Missed the IRIE Goodstream here David, but Man are you ever CRUSHIN' IT!!! Grocery Row garden, chickens and muscadines, hmm...what is the difference between a grape and a muscadine, watching the chat replay, you state the muscadine has a spicy, exotic flavor verging from tart to sweet where the grapes are just too SWEET! Next project you'll be establishing beehives, planting prickly pear, maybe a goat or two, fattening up a pig and probably even growing carp, tilapia or catfish in an aquaponics project. Thanks for sharing, like and greetings to The Good Famiy! :)
It is still legal to make your own wine.
Until it is determined to be racist, a cause of global climate change or a potential CO VID spreader.
You made a rhombus!?!? Lol, I might have had a child/post rolling contest! But, well done! That looks great, I planted the one grape I got, earlier in the spring, but let it depend on the rain, it has been reaching the top of the 4 foot fence I put in near, looks pretty, I used the leaves in my fermented pickles, didn't really help keep them crispy...
Ah, Heidi at Rain Country makes wine and mead, for cooking and her other potions, and trading, as need, and also, An American homestead, he has great videos about his wine.
I am thankful for your video today, watched a few songs, especially, Buried....as I buried my sweet Snuggles (a 3 pound chia-poo) the other morning, my companion of 17 years, a good buddy, and now, will feed my blueberries soon. Was glad to be able to sing about it, praise God for friends and songs . Thank you
I pray blessings over you and yours, and again, well done.
Sorry about Snuggles - sounds like a good, long life. And it continues in blueberries.
There's nothing like tangled wire to build good character. Hahahaha!
I agree, Muscadines are God's grapes lol. They're my favorite by far!! Muscadine wine is delicious too.
This reminds me, I need to rack that carboy. Since I have started growing things, Muscadines pound for pound have been the best bang for my buck. I did drip irrigation and I have recently ripped it out with the wire that supported it. I will weed eat the rows and hand knife sickle around the base of the vines. What's good about muscadines is they are super easy. You prune End of Feb/March, and then all you have left to do is harvest. They say keep the weeds down, but im lazy and still get loads of fruit. Like I said before I used to irrigate but now I don't do that. When I started I heard it was "Important to fertilize" now, I don't even do that. They give so much that it would be good if they only gave 50% of what they do. They get aphids, but a good gardener knows that that's lady bug food and the aphids don't slow down the vines. Tell your kiddos to watch out for the paper wasp. I flag them with flagging tape when I run up on them. Wasp get to live. I know your Cheap Dr G :) but splurge and get you one of these bags. Get the padded shoulder pads as well you will thank me :) . www.sfequip.com/long-cordura-picking-bag/

You got a lot of good ones, there. Nice work. I miss having mature vines covered in fruit.
Sweet! We’re going to put some around our new place.
Gotta figure out where goes what.
But at least we have a starter chicken coop!
Good work!
I hope your ears are okay after using the chainsaw, remember to stay David The Safe.
And safety glasses I was afraid those wires might snap . You never know.
And a spacesuit in case the atmosphere of the world burns off into space while I'm putting in poles.
@@davidthegood Elon Musk approves. But in all seriousness, we want to see you around for a long time doing awesome things. That's why we bought it up.
That is overkill for grapes!! I look forward to seeing which plant you choose. Our garden (Pinellas County) has three types of grapes. The Southern Home has been a vigorous and happy plant!
Wait until you see the grapes, basketball size :D
We grew Southern Home before - it is an easy grower.
Are you aware of the 3-4-5 technique to find make or check to see if something’s square? It’s easier for both of us if you look it up on UA-cam Great gardening channel BTW I particularly like the music videos you sometimes end with . solid gold!
If the poles were taller I would imagine putting bat boxes on top could benefit your soil!
Wow. I just transplanted muscadine seedlings to my chain link fence. Now that I’ve seen your most excellent grape support system, I’m wondering if my old fence can hold up. 😬😄
Should be vine, I mean fine, I'm no grape expert though I just know those fences are pretty sturdy unless rusted.
We just put our posts in today too...ours are about the same size. Got the wrong ones and too lazy to take them back. I was wondering would it be a good idea to put bird houses on the top of them? Or will that just encourage the birds to eat the grapes? Also thinking of placing hanging brackets on the sides and put plants that good get the beneficial bugs.
We bought stainless steel "dog pans" from Walmart and put upside down on top of our post. This keeps the rain from soaking into the end and rotting the post. Be sure to measure the post top first and take the tape measure with you to Walmart.
I then drilled 4 holes around the rim for deck screws. We also spray painted the out-side of the pans with a dull color because we did not like the shiny surface.
@@charlesdevier8203 thank you. Great idea.
Now that you've watched the video, go watch it again with "closed caption" on, especially the first few minutes....
Whoops. I have two established grapes vines, four years old. They are in the center of a 70' fence, 4' apart. One spreads left and the other spreads right. One is a heavy producer (the one I like) and the other one is a light producer. I like that far less so it works out.
I planted a third vine, 20' from the other vines. So I guess I did that correct.
Sounds right.
Why did you flip those logs end over end and not drag them to where you needed with a tractor or cart?
Cause I skipped the gym to build a vineyard.
@@davidthegood "Work smarter not harder" is so overrated! 😉
I think my grapes are jealous. They've just been growin on the same ole cattle fence along the same ole hedge row for decades. Lol
Not gonna lie, but I felt a little guilty while watching David move those logs across the field by himself. Kind of like watching from the sideline while a friend is in need, but not getting up to help. 😆
We're just going to use our *tiny eyes* in your mind
David the good seal trng day one
David the Good wine: if it's not Good it's sh*t
You missed your opportunity to practice the Caber Toss.
And that's why I haven't bothered with grapes or asparagus 🤣
It is work.
If you had used wire anchors this would have been thru in half the time. You also created problems by drilling thru each pole
