[Jamming with Jack Thammarat]
On Thursday, Feb 4 2016, I had the awesome opportunity to spend a day with Thailand's amazing guitarist Jack Thammarat at his studio in Bangkok. He graciously made time to meet up with both me and Yin, making a trip from Pattaya to Bangkok!
It was a really cool geek out session with me asking Jack questions about his playing and Jack asking me questions about jazz guitar. We found out that we both are Tim Miller fans and are both fascinated with Charlie Parker's bebop lines. Jack played me his very cool chord melody version of the Bill Evans jazz waltz piece, Very Early and I played him my arrangement of Misty and Getaran Jiwa. Over the 5 hour and a half session, we jammed on jazz standards from Autumn Leaves, Blue Bossa, Spain, a jazz blues in Bb and also exchanged ideas on improvising over common jazz progressions such as I VI II V, II V I and also one chord vamps like an extended A7 funk vamp.
I was very happy to have the opportunity to discover more of his interest in jazz and also hear his ideas on picking for both rock and jazz settings.

how do you solo these bossa/fusion theme? what scale do u use?
Start off with using the basic arpeggios. Once you're comfortable with that, start adding upper extensions (9ths; 11th's; 13ths etc.) once you have that down, start experimenting with substitutions (Eg. playing Eb maj7 over C-7 to get a Maj 9 sound etc.) Watch Jens Larsen's tutorial video on this piece to get you started ua-cam.com/video/SGDUbZUi5mA/v-deo.html. The fusion sound comes from using altered scales, pentatonics, various modes of the major/melodic minor, whole tone scales. The list is endless. But start with getting the chord tones, i.e. arpeggios comfortable first. That is your foundation. Good luck.

Hey man, glad you enjoyed the video. Both our solos were improvised, if you'd like tabs for it - I would recommend hiring a professional like Levi Clay to transcribe it for you. If not, try learning it slowly note by note - that's what Jack and I would do when we hear something we like a lot. Good luck!
Az Samad I really liked the solos, so far it was the best improvisations I found on the internet of this theme (blue bossa). I'm a Brazilian guitarist and I'm starting to study blues and jazz, and what motivated me to study was this video, but I still have difficulties in
Take quick soles like this one by lol lol lol. You are masters. I really wanted to learn these solos to add to my improvisation. It would be nice to make tabs available if it were possible, but I will not do my best to learn. Thank you, Success.

Not sure for Jack but I was most likely using:
Cmin7 = C aeolian, C dorian, C minor pentatonic, C minor blues and maybe C altered leading into the Fmin7
Fmin7 = F dorian, F minor pentatonic, F minor blues
Dmin7b5 = Dlocrian natural 9
G7 = G altered
Ebmin7 = Eb dorian
Ab7 = Ab Mixolydian, Ab altered
Dbmaj7 = Db major, Db lydian
I also use a lot of the arpeggios of the chords more than scales in general and often will add passing and approach chromatics in my lines.

What was Jack's guitar?
Not 100% sure but I think this is a Variax Standard electric guitar. Jack uses a lot of Yamaha guitars in general. Best to ask Jack on his channel or FB page! :)

Untuk Cminor - C aeolian atau C dorian biasanya. Kalau bluesy, c minor pentatonic dan c minor blues scale. Lain berubah untuk setiap chordnya. Saya biasanya fikir tentang chord tones & arpeggio dulu baru scale. Harap membantu! :)
