Rats are the best, they may live short lives(generally 2yrs, but can live to 4yrs) but, they are extremely intelligent, sensitive animals. When you form a bond with a rat, it's for life and they will be sure to show you every day how much they love you :)

They teach giant rats to sniff out landmines. So much faster and they're so light that they don't set them off. Out the effort in and they'll be smarter than any dog.

"How come these are different from sewer rats" Pet rats are extremely clean (cleaner than cats!), they are super friendly and incredibly intelligent. It's like comparing a crow you see on the street to a pet bird. They're just not the same.
Sewer rats are also incredibly intelligent, and would be friendly if interacted with from a young age like pet rats are. Pet rats aren't instinctively friendly. Few things are. They're even the same species. The only difference between a sewer rat and a pet rat is their upbringing. Sewer rats are dirty because of where they live, pet rats are clean because of where they live. A pet rat kept in squalid conditions would be filthy too.
Crows you see on the street are also incredibly intelligent. Corvids in general are pretty amazing.

I don't understand why people are so scared of rats. Literally, what's so bad about hairless tails? And rats are actually very smart. I taught my rats lots of tricks, like spin and jump, hoop jump, weave, etc. Pet rats don't carry diseases and they keep themselves very clean. Plus, they're just plain adorable. I really like playing with several rats at a time too. I can get why those people shuddered when the rats got on their necks though. I do it too, not because I'm afraid but because it tickles.

Yes I agree! Rats are such cute animals! They're not disgusting as much as people think they are. They use a majority of their day grooming themselves. I would take rats over a hamster as a pet any day.

Future rat owners....always have at two rats. Not to is cruel. They are very social and so sweet. They can be litter trained.
Good point, but it could be phrased a little better. You should always get two, and never just one because they're social animals and will get bad depression if kept alone. In lots of countries it's considered animal abuse to just keep one

@@vannahvengeance1992 I'm a rat owner, and if you're trying to teach them to trust you try holding out some treats in your hand and let them come near you. You can also hold them for longer periods of time, that will help.

i had a pet rat once. he was the smartest ever. he would put himself to sleep in his cage, even if the cage was open and he would come to me when called and he knew tricks. he was so sweet. i miss him :)

Actually, they have to be three to be happy. Also, make sure their place to stay is gigantic, it has to have 0,5 qm walking space for them. Rats need a lot more to be happy than you'd think.

rats are like tiny dogs. like if you took the spirit of golden retrievers and labs and corgies and put them in tiny teeny furry baby form. my older girl, momo, used to be small enough to be encased in my hands- now, she likes to jam her face in my fist and relax the rest of her body out like a rug for pets.
+thetoastlives Exactly, they're so much like small dogs! I sometimes ask dog owners who have said something mean about a rat to imagine how they'd feel hearing someone say they wanted to kill their adorable dog or feed it to a snake :( it helps them to understand.

I stopped having rats for pets because of their short life spans. I get very attached to my pets and 2-4 years is too short a time with them. 😢

No difference. Rats are cuddly when you raise them. Take a pet rat as a tiny baby and put it in the nature and it will get feral.
It's not like with dogs. Dogs and humans co-evolved over tens of thousands of years. Pet rats came to be since like 19th century and we've just made them into fancy color lineages.
Literally no difference between sewer rat and pet rat. A sewer rat can also be a great pet if it's raised.

I melted as soon as I saw the rats face peeking out through the door. These beautiful babies are amazing. If I was there, then on the outside id be grinning and going "awwww" And id be cuddling them etc. Inside I'd be screaming like a directioner who got a surprise visit from Harry Styles. XD.

I have two pet rats, Cheese Puff and Ozzy. They really are great pets, and although they need a lot of attention they aren't super hard to take care of. And they are really smart animals. The only downside is they only live a couple years.

I finally adopted rats a month ago after waiting for almost 2 years! Best decision I ever made!
People thinking of getting pet rats: make sure you take care of them properly, please! My relatives didn't and their rat died prematurely. Get them in pairs or they get lonely & depressed; don't feed them human food (don't even start, because then they start preferring it) and make sure they're eating their rat pellets and always have access to fresh water; handle them with gentleness and care and like with any pet make sure not to scare them or make them hostile by being hesitant or reacting negatively when you touch them. Keep them away from wires because they will chew them. Clean their cages regularly and put in fresh dressings, whatever you're using. They can sit on your shoulder and will be happy to do so if you can handle them successfully and they feel comfortable with you, but that relationship takes time to build. They're cautious, intelligent animals; they're not toys. It's a big responsibility so make sure you're ready to take it on.
Some 'human food' is really good for them. They should have fresh veggies often, along with their ran block.

Gotcha, sorry about that! You're right, candy and stuff like that is bad for them. A SMALL amount of DARK chocolate is a good treat (and good for them in SMALL amounts), but that's all I would give them.
Just always do your research before owning a new pet.
Actually it's best to have at least a pack of three rats, so that if two don't get along as well or had a fight, they can still have the other as a friend until the situation calms down. It's also very important to have a big cage- rats need a lot of room. There are some guides online on how to turn a closet into a rat cage. Also, their lungs are very sensitive!!! So the bedding you use shouldn't produce dust or fuzz they could choke on. Best is fleece or similar. Their cage couldn't be too close to a window because if it's drafty they can get sick and even if their cage is big, they should be taken out in a rat-proof space in your home (not outside! they can get hurt or sick!) so they can run around and stuff for at least an hour a day.

Just make sure to get 2 rats since rats often need a rat friend. And making sure they have plenty of room in their cage with toys. Maybe a hammock so they can chill out on it. Some stuff in the cage that they can hide in if they want.

Awe rats are so misunderstood sometimes. I’ve had a lot of pets over the years but my 3 rats are really interactive. They love to play, snack, and snuggle. I also think it’s cute how they like to sit in your pocket or on your shoulder 😆
Rats (domesticated ones, at least) are un-ironically some of the friendliest animals ever. They're just so chill.

Rats are the sweetest animals I have ever known. Rats are honestly the most wonderful pets to have and they love their owners so much.
Not too long ago I lost one of my gerbils to an unknown condition and I was extremely distraught over it, but my two rats literally looked upset because I was crying and they were by the door of their cage wanting to come out, when I opened their cage they both came out and onto my shoulders and just cuddled with me for ages. One of my rats are usually energetic and the other one is more shy but both of them were calm and really looked after me.
If I didn’t have my rats I probably wouldn’t be here today. I love rats so much 💖

I love rats! They are so sweet and smart. They're as easily potty-trainable as cats and can learn as many tricks as dogs. I do understand that some people do have an uncontrollable fear response to rats, given that our ancestors were trained to associate them with disease and such, and it's still a terrible idea to interact with wild rats. But a domesticated, well groomed, well socialized rat is a delightful creature to play with.
I've had some wild rescues (: by all means don't chase around giant sewer rats that have no understanding of humans though! Haha. But I rescued mine before they could even eat, and they were incredibly smart and very sweet. Rats are the best!
