Zaky I have been told that the owner can't be the agressor so my question is who can be the agitator . Friends and family can't do it because it will attack them later outside of training and also friends and family are the only ones to put the time in. Who should I get to be the agressor and how much does it cost to get dog trained by pros to be a protective guardian type dog. My final question is if my American akita is suitable for a protective guard dog/ personal guardian job

MegamiSama88 no....a police dog will attack anyone mask or not on command so Im assuming it really doesn't matter you just have to train it to hop off an attacker on command which is the hardest part.

@@b1squitz31 you're Akita will work, but it might do this with very little training. You can have him do bite work, even have him bite you with a sleeve, if you have a strong bond with your dog it will know not to attack you with full force and may enjoy the exercise. I've put my Akita in situations where I had a friend ‘threaten’ me and she responded immediately, no training was actually necessary, Akitas just need a kind of honing of their natural instinct, as they were breed to be guard dogs. Mastiffs are the same way, but both of these dogs independent nature makes them difficult to do this for sport, it's difficult to off leash train them etc. Just have a friend creep around the corner of your house while you're sitting with your dog on leash, and have him scream and threaten you. As soon as your dog responds with aggression have him run away. That's how it all starts...

Dogs are so smart. Training goes like:
    1. Sit there, no idea what’s going on.
    2. Makes a small amount of effort and gets rewarded.
    3. Suddenly the dog knows exactly what’s going on, and does exactly what you want it to.

It's not raw intelligence, but intuition. Dogs basically do have a sixth sense, there are sooo many documented cases of dogs sensing danger (whether it be a violent threat, or someone who got seriously injured in an accident, or something else) almost supernaturally. Look up "dogs know when owner is returning", they can somehow sense, that the owner is returning home soon, with seemingly no indication or provocation at all, even when the owner is going out for random lengths of time, to random places.

Thoroughly enjoyed it, and a great reminder of the importance of the decoys in both physical and psychological aspects. It is sad to see that many "trainers" have forgotten the defense drive (as has negative reinforcement been forgotten), and that those who have "found" defense drive overly advocate it without a emphasizing a balance of the dog. Thanks for the video guys!

This seems just really odd to me. I have a personal protection dog, trained for me and her training was nothing like this. She had great temperament but her protection work was started early. The dog was brought to me at nine months and at nine months and two weeks I had an encounter with a stalker. She was ready to handle that situation even at that young age. I am not saying that it can't be done this way. I just can't imagine my shepherd having an 'agitator' standing over me, pretending to beat me while the dog stands down in the hall looking on.

Put in Reagan Von Prufenpuden and you can see my pup at about eight to ten weeks starting the beginning of her training. She was a little beast even then. She is four now.

Voice projection, consistency, singular repetition always worked when I did it 45 years ago.

An interesting approach and very different than the introduction I've been taught. I'll definitely need to try this for myself. How do handle the situation with just one handler? Back-tie the dog? I'm very interested in seeing the progression of this dog :)
One very important point I think should be driven home is that any prospect of protection work should be balanced and well-socialized. A dog reacting out of fear and making its own decisions leads down a very slippery slope. This is definitely the type of training that warrants the "Do not try this at home" label.

The problem with the handler was that that should padded the dog a little harder not just pet him. petting is to calm the dog. The decoy should have attacked the female and then walked toward the handler and when the dog barks aggressively, the decoys runs away. do this a few time times until the dog responds to the word to watch and bark. The dog will respond better and more aggressive.

I didn't understand petting the dog before it alerted on the handler. Also, I thought tightening the leash would inhibit any forward moving tendencies from the dog.

I'm far from an expert on this sort of thing. However it appears lesson the dog may have learned is that there's no need to do anything as she was fine without his assistance.
I'd be looking for a dog that would anticipate a problem and be ready to step in before that fatal blow has landed. He looked like he was watching TV.

Exactly, no way REAL protection dog would watch this. Lessons like that ok for 5 month old puppy, 2 years old dog is failure if he didn't learn how to bite on defense as early as 7 weeks old lol

Can a west highland white terrrier be trained to do this? They're usually -- i guess "tougher" than your average small dog breed? and mine is highly territorial too.

Great and very informative. Only surprised this GSD did not go mad. My boy is untrained and you would have had problems holding him back. Want to watch mainly for ways to train him to stop when there isn't a threat. Can take him to a busy street and he will kiss kids and sniff hands. At night when I am on high alert, my boy will not let anyone near us. I know he feeds off my energy but I find it impossible to exert a calmness. If I get startled by someone appearing out of nowhere - he also reacts.
I met with a long time friend and the person who lost my moms dog. He had never met either. He initially barked at the girl who lost my moms dog and I stopped him. He was all puppy and kisses to my longtime friend. In the two hours in their company, he would not let the girl touch him, would not take a treat from her and would shy away from her. He picks up on my feelings too easily. On the other hand, my obedience trainer started to air punch in front of me and remarked how unprotective he was - I was laughing and smiling while he was doing this.
If you can direct me to anything which will help with my boy - I would be most grateful. He has certificates in obedience. Does scentwork and heelwork to music. Great with dogs and kids.

Kohane Samuel - because the goal is to teach the animal to intervene favorably in a specific scenario involving other people (e.g, being attacked), you’re only ever going to achieve productive results by training with other people.
