Believe it or not thats actually just Chino's raw vocals on those extremely distorted screams! Where as most singers are told to go 70% he goes 100%, the scream itself is beautifully haunting. Highly recommend Bloody Cape for his crazy output of screams in the song and Damone for when he was younger and his pipes are at his prime for screaming!
@@fharidvalencia2068 which is basically would he did in that era sadly, Chino had to relearn how to scream after getting surgery on a vocal cord that he paralyzed with his live screams, yet he still kills it modern day.
The craziest thing about some of the screams in this album is that I can't think of even Chino being able to replicate that kind of scream more than once in a blue moon. That is not a metal scream or a healthy use of distortion, its literally just an anguished scream. To get it to sound the way he did was probably one of those rare moments in the studio where he recorded it and everyone was like "thats the one, put it in now" like you couldn't get it again if you tried. He has some ridiculous screams like those speckled through live and studio music, he can do crazy stuff with consistency, but the way that he screams into the fifth octave, the extreme height and vocal cracking, I have only ever heard that on Hexagram, Rats Rats Rats, and a few live screams. I cant think of very many vocalists that can go as earsplittingly high as chino can in screaming techniques. Whether its a fry scream of a guttural using mouth manipulation to get overtones, something is special about a guy who has never been vocally coached making noises that almost nobody else can, inhale screaming is about the only way to get those notes and most people can't do that.
Chino’s vocals are actually pretty raw in this track, they put a filter over the vocals & compressed them often, you’ll hear it on all their albums, but the screams themselves are all him
Something you probably can’t hear right off the bat are the synths going on during the verses and outros. You can hear them the best during the 2nd verses and the outro. It’s what brings the whole song together IMHO.
that's not electronic distortion, that's the sound of a man's voice being pushed to an almost breaking point. he either lost control of it for a second, or he is good enough that he knew pushing his voice that close to the edge would be needed for that moment. i choose to believe option #2.
There is a official music video that's you should checkout also. He's saying worship, play ,worship play . Great opening song on a great album. More deftones and I would say any song would work.
This band one my favorite way back 95-97 until know the are unique band watching from phillipines 🇵🇭 bro 🤘🤘🤘🎚️rock on Can u I play( back to school)Deftones 👍
U just getting into Deftones? I've had the opportunity to see them a few times. Definitely my favorite band. If u do an album review I would recommend around the fur. It's a little more refined than the first album, but still pretty gritty and raw.
Chino was using vocal break to form distortion during this album. He damaged his voice pretty badly from the past few albums, and seemed to change his technique just a little bit. There's no electronic edits on his voice.
Need to do some shit from thier new album Ohms. I recommend Error or Genisis. Also Im assuming you have heard Change in The House Of Flies, thier most popular song ever, if not need to react to that ASAP Seriously! You are missing out if you have not heard it!. This is my favorite band all time, seen them live at least 20 times. Trust me when I tell you this, his voice is not edited or enhanced. Thats his real scream. Seen it live enough times. Chino is fucking incredible with his range.
It was actually before this album that he started messing up his voice. Believe it or not, this album and after were when he was singing in a more safe and trained manner.

I don't think anything can top this screaming, because it doesn't even seem to have any technique, it seems just a raw "I'm ending my voice rn" scream

No electronic distortion in that scream, it is just his voice literally breaking with emotion. So raw and real.

The screams are raw. His voice is just breaking up and cracking mid scream, which gives it that glitchy sound
his screams are so raw and beautiful

Loved it! One of their most underrated albums...Deftones are still FIRE!!!

The aethereal synths (?) through this song mixed with "How its so sweet of you" parts are hauntingly beautiful for some reason. I can't explain it.
976 evil! Underrated deftones track

You should react to Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event! it's deftones' most emotional song in my opinion
I agree. The only other one I would say rivals it is "U,U,D,D,L,R,L,R,A,B,Select,Start" (instrumental track) from Saturday Night Wrist.
reminds me musically of early mogwai

That was all Chino. Real and raw. This is about the time he started destroying his vocal cords

Man that’s his scream, he does it live at like 50+ lol
