What kind of furnace is that? That looks like a Carrier. That's a good furnace. I just installed one of those today. As another comment said. A good pipe wrench and a crescent wrench makes the job super easy

You should keep the pipe dope and Teflon tape away from the end of the pipe to prevent accidentally getting it into the gas valve burners etc,

Should you put the union inside the case for when you have to service those? Can you remove the union throught he housing?
Union on outside as he has it & no pipe dope on threads going into gas valve, only yellow (gas approved) tape.
