- This week, I found out that one of tawny owl Luna's eggs was damaged. Now I've found out how it happened.

Luna's eggs are a week away from hatching, but when she gets in a scuffle with neighbouring resident barn owl Gylfie, one of her eggs is damaged.

Will you remove it?
can damaged eggs still hatch. I know this may sound like a stupid question but can that egg still grow and hatch even though the shell is damaged
Luna recognised the egg was no longer viable and actually ate the egg over the weekend. This is completely normal behaviour.
I have such a difficult time finding the live cams. I wish I knew why. 😥

Still very hopeful for the 3 remaining 🥚. Fingers crossed for some beautiful baby towlets for Luna and Bomber. She has been sitting so well this year.

I thought her eggs had already hatched. 🤔I saw more than one video on the channel a few days ago. It was a big occasion because she hadn't had any babies of her own in the last two years (leaving out the babies she adopted as her own, ofc). One video showed two babies hatching and another one showed a third chick hatching. And one egg did not hatch. I also saw a video where Robert gave her one additional rescued chick in addition to her own brood of three.
@@voiciray it’s from different years :) the longer, narrated documentary videos are compiled and edited from previous years. The short clips (mostly without narration) like this one, is clips from just a few hours/days ago on the live stream. 🙂
At least she protected the other 3 😊

Many thanks. Lunas eggs are due to hatch over the Easter weekend so we will all be watching closely. My gallery is open every day and the coffee pot is always on. This reminds me of when Jeff attacked Luna while she was incubating last year. I'm so sorry that one of the eggs was damaged this time and I'm hoping so fervently that Luna and Bomber have some successful eggs this year. Thank you for sharing this film, Robert.

This is very sad... I feel so bad for Luna.
Same! They are such a wonderful owl family, even adopting little owlets who lost their families and letting them grow up strong and beautiful. I hope they're doing well after the fight. Going to bet the barn owls are Gylfie and Dryer. Gylfie is pretty dominant, last time I checked.

bad luck :( so close to hatching date, and usually the eggs don't get damaged when these things happen.. fingers crossed that the rest are all viable ^^ (even one would be good, but the more the merrier)

Amazing watching her defend her nest in that way. I was shocked at the Barn Owl though.
Probably betting the barn owl pair is Gylfie and Dryer. Gylfie is pretty dominant from time to time, last time I checked.

Interesting to see Dryer on the branch with Gylfie although I did suspect he may be acting as lookout! Same thing happened last year except Luna was out and Gylfie just tapped an egg with her beak before leaving. She is just nosey and likes to know what's going on. So sad her visit didn't end well this year 😢

Hi yes unfortunately the eggs do get damaged occasionally but they are surprisingly resilient

Doubt it, and not without the risk of scaring off the parents and potentially killing the other 3 unhatched chicks. Best to leave it alone and let nature take its course.

Gylfie and Dryer the barn owls share the same area as Luna and Bomber.They often have skirmishes at times.Bomber chased the barn owls and knocked them off feeding perches at times.Just very unfortunate that Luna damaged her own egg in seeing off Gylfie.
gylfie couldnt just stay in her home, she had to pay luna a visit
That's just the reality of nature. These two pairs probably fight every year. They share the same territory, and many times want the same nest site. If you watch some of the other videos on this channel, you can see that they squabble often.

I think you all need to keep in mind that these are wild animals.
Sadly nature is not always kind - Gylfie has been scraping in Elm Stump, which is where she usually lays, so hopefully once she settles there will be no more nest shopping. 🤷 Although I do recall darling Finn continually checking out all the local nests when the occupants were away 😁

The egg may be cracked, but has the internal membrane been punctured? If not, will the egg still be likely to hatch, if it is still being incubated?

Greetings from Canada thanks for sharing this video about Luna and bomber the circle of life is never easy and sad 😢, in the panic of bomber with Luna she obviously stepped on the egg and this is how they lost 1 of the hatchling
Would it have been possible to put tape or something over the hole in the egg immediately after it happened or is a cracked egg doomed no matter what?

It was doomed since she ate the egg
It is not permitted to disturb any nesting bird and tawny owls are particularly protective of their nests.
@RobertEFuller I'm just asking because we've seen you step in from time to time to help chicks or dig out a nest entrance plus these birds will get rings. So would it have been possible to "fix" this egg?
After a little Google research it is possible to fix an egg! Glue and tape are used to seal cracks and holes in incubated eggs. The biggest risk to a cracked egg is bacteria getting in!

I have no idea. Once the eggs hatch, we'll find out. Overheard it can be at any moment now. Probably next week, but I'm not sure.🤷♀️ I just hope the eggs are okay. Luna is such a wonderful mother and a trooper.🤞🥺

I try to share snippets of the stories as they unfold - this clip just happened last week. I then put together a longer film sharing the whole story.
These short clips are from the current live stream. The longer documentary videos with narration are from several weeks/months of earlier years that have been compiled together into a movie.
