I feel like this scene isn't given enough credit for how breathtakingly insightful it is. It's covered in bling and lingo, but what Radio Raheem says here is actually profound. I get chills every time.
This is one of the coolest scenes in this movie, it's almost surreal, but doesn't feel out of place and adds a lot of depth to raheem's character. Plus the reference is cool.
I always thought this was an original shot created by Spike but I just watched The Night of the Hunter(1955) and the scene originated it there. Still amazing to see spike lee incorporate the idea into a film like this. Well done !
OMG, never knew this- thank you (just watched the clip). SL did a great job lifting it and making it fit with the movie’s style and the characters. This is the scene that I remember the most from this movie.
@@mauricesantinomf if you haven’t seen that movie then your opinion is invalid. Spike Lee clearly loved that scene and wanted a recreate it for a younger audience.
This scene took me home. Great motivational message from Radio Raheem. Man! I just wish that Bill Nunn still lives. I miss the brother. Rest In Power. Your spirit still lives on.🙏🏾👼🏾
This film is objectively better than Driving Ms. Daisy. And almost 30 years later Blackkklansman would lose to Green Book, a reversed race Driving Ms. Daisy. Spike deserves better.
Great scene - and tribute - to Bill Nunn. It was nice to see him and the rest of the cast for the film's 20-year reunion. Still have a hard time believing he's gone. May he Rest in Peace.
Shout out to everybody that has to prove how knowledgeable and cultured they are but constantly point out this scene was referencing the scene from "Night of the Hunter".Good job, we're impressed.
yea but radio raheem performed it better in my opinion. more interesting and captivating, but it's not about who performs it or created it's about the message in it. That love conquers hate, that love conquers all.
I would say, Isaac, that's because Radio Raheem genuinely believes that love can conquer hate whereas Powell used that speech as a way to further sucker people into believing he was a genuine man of God. Both iterations are brilliantly portrayed by Bill Nunn here and Robert Mitchum in "Night of the Hunter", but it ultimately feels more relatable here for the reason I noted.
I’m impressed with ur knowledge of Robert Mitchum. I didn’t think any black born since the 70-80s would have a clue who he was. Not that he had any significance to black people but to know about black and white cinema is impressive.
RIP Bill Nunn - one the finest and my favorite character actors. He always brought the goods, became totally immersed in the character without also losing any of his innate charisma or presence. I do miss seeing him around.
Spike was tough as nails to say” here it is love and hate”. That quick moment could’ve went bad. But spike knew he had love and Radio seen love in him. A lot of ppl don’t get those passes in the hood. Let alone bedstuy Brooklyn. Spike had the G pass in the hood. And he wasn’t big or anything not a bully. Just a cool guy that everyone loves to see.
That's one for the most true meanings of life. Love and Hate are constantly fighting one and other over the control on us. I know this is about race, but it's also applicable to the things we hate and love in general and how it conditions our behavior.
Spike Lee got the inspiration for Radio raheem's rings from the movie The Night of the Hunter one of the characters had tattoos on their fingers that said the same thing "love" & "hate"

Love and Hate is the title of my new album and it's a direct homage to this scene. I'm grateful that Spike Lee gave us this masterpiece and glad that I got to experience it at such a young age. What a great lesson and truth. These words are burned into my brain forever. The story of life told by Radio is epic. The choice is yours between love and hate.
