DUI Driver Hits Family Resulting in 5 Year Old Brain Dead

SANTA ANA (CNS) - A 5-year-old boy who has been in the hospital since he, his parents and two siblings were injured over the weekend when hit by a vehicle while on a bicycle ride, has reportedly been declared brain dead.
The boy and his family were injured on Sunday when a suspected DUI driver hit them. Earlier this week, the suspect -- 29-year-old Ceferino Ascencion Ramos of Santa Ana -- was charged with hit-and-run with permanent and serious injury, failing to stop at a hit-and-run accident with injury, and driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, all felonies.
Jacob Ramirez has been declared brain dead by doctors, according to an NBC4 report updated early Friday morning.
"Right now, I just have 24 hours I begged them for to just spend as much time as I can with him," Angela Hernandez Mejia, the boy's mother, told NBC4.
Angela and the family's 8-month-old daughter were also hurt in the crash but have since been released from the hospital. Angela's husband and their 6-year-old daughter, Gianna, remain in the hospital, NBC4 reported.
The mother said she plans on being at her son's bedside until she has to say goodbye. She told NBC4 that doctors performed one final scan on Jacob's brain and unfortunately, it showed no activity.
"It's just so hard," Angela said. "Now, I just think what could I have done different. I would have even given my life for my son."

According to the Garden Grove Police Department -- which reported Friday morning that they could not confirm that the boy had been declared brain dead -- two adults were riding with the children in bike trailers at about 7:35 p.m. Sunday in the 12300 block of Haster Street at Twin Tree Lane when they were struck by a black 2003 Toyota Camry and the driver left the scene.
"A nearby witness followed the suspect vehicle and notified officers of its whereabouts as it fled the scene of the collision," GGPD Traffic Investigator John Yergler said in a statement. "Officers located the vehicle, conducted a traffic stop and detained the driver/solo occupant of the vehicle approximately 1.2 miles from the original collision scene."
The father, 27, and two children were rushed to hospitals in critical condition, according to police.
The criminal complaint alleges Ramos got in his car in Santa Ana to drive to a liquor store in Anaheim to buy more beer. He is accused of having a blood-alcohol level of .22, according to the complaint.
Ramos did not enter a plea at his arraignment Tuesday. He was scheduled to be arraigned July 25 in the West Justice Center in Westminster.

"i gotta follow the law and be off the sidewalk" screw that!!!! side walk almost all the time!!!! if someone is walking then you just slow down and let them pass. if its super crowded with walkers, guess what.... you chose the wrong route.

When I was younger I had a friend who’s mom was an alcoholic and meth user one day was driving in the car with her little sister who was 5 at the time one day and wrecked and there was a dresser in the back of her car that had hit her in the head this was 6+ years ago. Poor baby couldn’t and still can barely walk or talk🥺 then they gave her right back to mom🙃 who obviously couldn’t have given a fuck about taking care of her correctly. It’s crazy to me. That little girl now has to be taken care of the rest of her life because of her mom😢

@@hollyphillips7597 i hope that too. i just looked into it though and when you are brain dead the chance of you waking up is crazy low. of all time its only happened maybe 2 to 4 times if its a miracle. but when you are brain dead you only have a little bit of brain activity but not enough to do anything except breathe and keep your heart beating 😔

Not a bright place to ride bikes... sad but now that is why i never rode with traffic as a long time bmx bike rider.. you watch the cars come towards you.. and ride the left sidewalk.. otherwise you are risking a lot

Condolences to the family. As a bus driver for many years what really bothers me is when people crosses busy streets all day pushing kids in those play buggies and they will even try to intimidate the traffic a bit to stop for them. I never liked strollers and I know people have to live and take care of business that way but were in much crazier times now. I witnessed a lady due that with her 4 year old nephew and he was thrown about a block but she wasn’t hit at all. Please people take your family to parks etc and not these crazy streets. 🙏🏽❤️

This is why I never agreed with the bicyclists being forced to ride in the street with no barriers. They have absolutely no protection.
I have always thought that people riding bicycles in the street have a deathwish. It's extremely stupid to ride in the street. It's a fact of life these days. I expect drivers to not pay attention so i am safer for being extra careful. I can't even afford to bump into anyone with the condition my back is in...chronic pain 😢😢😢
I live on a beach town and it’s very common. Some roads are shared with bikes and there are signs everywhere. That it’s a shared road. Also they recently implemented green roads to show when the shared road and the bike line is at. It’s SD tho it’s everywhere all down the coast here
