What a phenominal song. I heard this back in 1993 for the first time and set out to find the 45. Surprisingly it took me almost 10 years to find this record. I do not understand how this record didn't hit #1.
Gene Chandler, the one and only. His big ones: 1.What Now 2.Nothing Can Stop Me 3. Bless Our Love 4. Just Be True To Me Gene hit the mark on these songs.
"what now" was the first Gene Chandler record i was exposed to. my mom & dad had the 45. i was probably 7 or 8 years old when i first heard it in the 70's. still one of the finest songs i've ever heard!
@cbjrcher I feel you on that. Even though I'm from the East Coast, that Chicago soul is a beast! The fact that Curtis Mayfield was a major architect of it made me like it the most. Much Respect!!!
This is a great song, and Gene, like so many other artists from that period, never got the credit he/they deserve. We got cheated out of songs like this back then and were force-feed music they (producers and record company excecutives) wanted us to hear and buy. Too bad. But thanks to you guys for posting.
I hear like songs like this and their appeal is that they always speak (or sing) to the deep pain love can bring. What now... what else can go wrong. Nothing like real R&B and soul to tell that story.
Gene is one of the best! Some girls preferred Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, they were great, but some girls preferred Gene, I'm one of them, he could always make me swoon. He needs to have a story done on him. He is truly unsung. Is he even inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, if not, that is a tragedy! The people should be fired over there for not inducting Gene Chandler.
@williamg2552 I'm sorry that you disagree! The song that he lipsynched was "Rainbow". He stayed on stage while singing it. He walked up and down the isle when singing some of the other songs!. I love hims so much. He was the man back in the day with the top hat, the cane and the cape!!
Yes those are the Impressions doing the backup. Curtis Mayfield wrote and produced for alot of Chicago Soul artists and was the architect of chicago Soul. Much Respect!!!!
Motown had most of the top R.n B music back in the day BUT cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, Memphis, had just as much great music coming out of those cities...
Chicago had the industry on lock definitely with Gene Chandler, Dee Clark, Betty Everett, Jerry Butler, The Impressions, The Dells, Billy Stewart, Fontella Bass, etc.
Yes you do that tremendpus high harmony of Fred Curtiand Sam. Curtis who pratically took on theMotown Sound.and The British Invaison along with what phil Spector and that Wrecking Crew.Thos act pretty much were the top hits. Curtis had Major Lance and The Duke of Earl, mister Gene Chandler.Gene Chandler could blow!
Absolutely, sweet soul sound coming out of the windy city.curtis mayfield wrote music that was smooth and unique.gene chandler did justice to this song and those incredible impressions in the background.
i guess he probably has lost his beatiful voice. He is about 75 or so! it really was agreat odies show. Chaka khan and Peobo bryson were also on the show!
Was not at that session, but that could very well be William Butler, it doe sound like Curtis...but they play very similar...and Billy has written and played on some things with Gene...but it sounds GOOD! whoever it is. Clennis (guitarist) Houston
That's because you aren't interested in the history of this country. Where white artists covered songs recorded by black artists originally and end up with the recognition that the black artists were denied.
The Duke Of Englewood Chicago... The legend Gene Chandler!
This is one of the reasons I love U Tube, we all get to see awesome rare footage of amazing artist's....Thanx for posting!.

What a phenominal song. I heard this back in 1993 for the first time and set out to find the 45. Surprisingly it took me almost 10 years to find this record. I do not understand how this record didn't hit #1.

2.Nothing Can Stop Me
3. Bless Our Love
4. Just Be True To Me
Gene hit the mark on these songs.
went to number 40 on the pop charts in 1965...I'm not sure about how well it did on the R&B charts, but I'll say it hit the top 10.

They don’t make them like that anymore.
