Her name was Hermine Braunsteiner. After the war she was prosecuted for war crimes when she was a guard at Ravensbrück, Germany, and served a few years imprisonment. In 1958 she married an American she met in Austria, Russell Ryan, and then emigrated to the U.S. by way of Canada, settling in Elmhurst and later Maspeth, Queens, NY, and became a U.S. citizen in 1963. The following year her whereabouts were found out by the Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal, and when the NY Times knocked on her door she answered "My God, I knew this would happen. You've come." In legal proceedings Braunsteiner's naturalized U.S. citizenship was revoked because she hadn't disclosed her war crimes when applying. She was extradited to W. Germany, and there tried and convicted for war crimes committed whilst a guard at a different camp, Majdanek in Poland. In 1981 she was sentenced to life in prison but was released in 1996 due to poor health. She died three years later at age 79. Braunsteiner was the first Nazi extradited by the U.S. to face war crimes prosecution.

Why she didn't receive the death penalty is pretty easy answered: Luck of time. Germany abolished death penalty after the war (when it was reinstated 1949), so her outliving the period were there was still death penalty saved her in that regard.
She wasn't tried by Germany. She was tried my International Courts. Germany has rarely tried Nazis. Half the country would have been on trial. Hermine fled to the US and lived until 1999 there until they found out who she was.
@@kellyszanyi6147 That's just bluntly wrong! If you don't know stuff, just don't post. 1.) Hermine Braunsteiner was tried and convicted by Germany (State Court Düsseldorf 1981-06-30, trial started 1975-11-26, the so called "Third Majdanek Trial") to lifetime. Right after the war she was held for two year in allied POW- / Interment-Camps, and then to three years by an Austrian Court for her doing in KZ Ravensbrück (but not Majdanek), however already released after less than a year. She then emigrated to Canada and the US. Her background was discovered later, she lost her (meanwhile gained) US-citizenship and in 1973 was extradited to Germany. There she was sent to pre-trial detention and in 1975 the trial started. 2.) Germany itself indeed tried a lot of Nazis (and still is). If someone is saying "to less, often to late, often to lenient" I would agree, however it did happen. The allies in the three western zones (FR, UK, US) sentenced ~5025 Germans (806 death penalty of which 486 were actually executed). The West-German authorities (and after reunification in 1990 for all Germany) until 2005 sentenced ~6656 Nazis. The situation in East-Germany / the Soviet occupation zone is not really comparable, since a) the USSR ordered trials (and outcomes) to East-Germany and b) you cannot speak about due process anyway there. However, just for the numbers, East Germany convicted ~ 21000 (21k) people, the Soviets itself an unknown number in secret trials.

I hate when people do this. Listen to what you're saying How exactly do you think they should've gone about it then? Think about some of the atrocities we know about, only because of the mass graves that were found (some of which, only found a decade or so after the war was over) ......we can speculate on who done it all we like, but You still gotta find out exactly who ordered it before you can go drag people into court to face justice. In some cases we know who ordered the war crime..... But finding them so you could bring them to justice was a different story. Then there's those cases where we know who and where they are. Problem is you can't simply go to another country, track someone down and go "hey mate you're coming with me"... because that's kidnapping.

There are a lot of us pilots and bomber crews at the end of ww2 that would be on that list. They bombed and fire bombed civilian targets to demoralize the civilian population in Germany and in japan. At 5:41 in the video there is footage of crowds of civilians being herded along, many of them smiling and well-dressed. They seem to be going into the camps. Apart from Jewish inmates, Majdanek Camp also held Poles and Soviet Union POWs. Ravensbruck camp was located in Germany, which is not stated.

So sad & heartbreaking 😢 how could a person do something so awful to another human, especially children & actually enjoy it!! 😞
And we still haven’t learned the lessons from history………..shame on all humans
Not all humans
History will always repeat itself. Too bad.
Without, for one moment, excusing the activities of the Nazis, the constant reference to the girl being only 14 reminded me that at about the same time the girl was hanged at Majdenek, a 14 year old boy, George Stinney, was executed in the electric chair in South Carolina.
So what
Yes I have read about that. He was found to be innocent years later.
@@seaslob2820 the boy was executed for murdering 2 girls. 2 girls he didn’t kill. (This was only proven 70 years later.)
Also the girl wasn’t even executed.
WOW
those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. It is good you remind people of history, especially the bad parts. If you look at social media today....that same hate that helped Hitler gain power is very prevalent. Just wish people would stop and think of others. Great videos by the way
true
What must run through the mind, when such horrors are committed.
Shamefully it gets repeated in every war situation - don't think your own countrymen or women would not do the unthinkable, if they (or YOU) had the position over others.
She only did it for healthcare, to keep others safe.

May Hermine be judged harshly for all of her crimes
Why she didn't receive the death penalty is pretty easy answered: Luck of time. Germany abolished death penalty after the war (when it was reinstated 1949), so her outliving the period were there was still death penalty saved her in that regard.
Germany is a better place for abolishing the death penalty.
1.)
Hermine Braunsteiner was tried and convicted by Germany (State Court Düsseldorf 1981-06-30, trial started 1975-11-26, the so called "Third Majdanek Trial") to lifetime.
2.)
Germany itself indeed tried a lot of Nazis (and still is).
My great grandfather my beloved granny dad and his brothers were in Majdanek camp. He was captured against conspiracy and cooperating with partizants. 3 brothers went to Majdanek in 1941 I beleive. My poor granny when she heard Germans are coming his with her mom and partizantsin the fields ahe watched Germans taking her dad, and burning their house. Their were in danger and his and lived in the forest for a bit separated with her mum for more than a year as they got sperated in the forest. My poor great grandfather brave farmer with not much was saving people and working for the underground with his brothers and many other breave hearts. In the camp was aful. Finally in January 1943, 80 years ago he was murderred beated to unconsciousness, on the main square, his crime was putti g newspaper under his striped pijamas as it was so cold and they had to stand hor hours from 4 am in the morning. They beat him and once he was barely alive but still alive they ordered to burn him in crematorium, and they ordered his brothers to do it. How sick and cruel! One of the brothers escaped majdanek he his in some kind of potato storage digged in the ground and he told rest of the family those stories. If on the outside of the fence most people would make excellent guards, if on the inside few of us would be among the survivors. We have what it takes to be cruel, we also have a survival instinct that would makes us do things we would never speak of after!
That's why this struggle with evil is not between countries and peoples but with ourselves.
Not everyone has that cruel streak. Although we all have the survival instinct. Proving a cruel heart is not an optimal survival trait.

Huge misjustice, not bringing all war criminals to justice!
I hate when people do this.
Listen to what you're saying
How exactly do you think they should've gone about it then?
Think about some of the atrocities we know about, only because of the mass graves that were found (some of which, only found a decade or so after the war was over) ......we can speculate on who done it all we like, but You still gotta find out exactly who ordered it before you can go drag people into court to face justice.
In some cases we know who ordered the war crime..... But finding them so you could bring them to justice was a different story.
Then there's those cases where we know who and where they are. Problem is you can't simply go to another country, track someone down and go "hey mate you're coming with me"... because that's kidnapping.

Today you find similar people in the roles of immigration and custom officers and prison guards. The only reason these sort of people don't go to the same extremes is only because they are prevented from doing so.
At 5:41 in the video there is footage of crowds of civilians being herded along, many of them smiling and well-dressed. They seem to be going into the camps. I think they might be German citizens forced by the Allies to see the extermination camps for themselves. They do not seem particularly bothered by what they are about to see. At 6:08 one of the guards seems puzzled and almost alarmed by their expressions. In its way these segments are the most disturbing footage of the war I have ever seen.

They always show that walk of death scene. And I noticed that there are nuns carrying little kids . Do you think that the nuns got murdered too.
I often wondered the same thing.
A lot of these killing facilities were in Poland and the Pols were mostly Catholic. I was told that the Pope at the time was a Nazi supporter. I bet these nuns, if indeed they were really nuns at all, we're used by the camps to leade the young "lambs to the slaughter".

Precision very much matters. 3:05-3:08 The correct name of the camp goes: the German Nazi Concentration Camp Majdanek. It was not located in Poland, but in German-occupied Poland. The same remark applies to Auschwitz. Following the German invasion of Poland 1939, pre-war Poland was reduced to the German administrative unit called General Gouvernement (name Poland erased). Apart from Jewish inmates, Majdanek Camp also held Poles and Soviet Union POWs. Ravensbruck camp was located in Germany, which is not stated. It might be clear for Europeans, but not necessarily so outside Europe.
