- The mysterious Overtoun Bridge at Overtoun House in Scotland is reportedly the location where around 600 dogs have thrown themselves over the side into the sheer drop and certain death.
Startling news reports have suggested that as many as 300 to 600 beloved pets have leapt over its sandstone turrets and into the rocky abyss below.
The cause is still a mystery.
Accounts have described dogs displaying uncharacteristic behaviours moments before their fateful jumps, at times fixating on an unseen presence or becoming frenzied and frantic.
What force possesses these dogs to seemingly take their own lives?

It’s not a mystery, they think they’re jumping over a wall into the woods. It looks like a wall to them because of the trees
A baby was also thrown off the bridge several years ago by a local man,the father thought the baby was sent to destroy humanity. A tragic case. Many dogs have jumped the bridge but no where near 600. A few have survived the drop only to make a second attempt causing their death. Folklore says it is a thin place, a place where the veil between this world and the next is hazy. I do not do superstition so disregard that. There must be a reason but so far no one knows why. Interestingly it is the same point in the bridge most dogs jump from. It is a beautiful place, just minutes from where I live.
Fabricated - I knew it. My Dog once walked willingly in front of a car. I thought maybe it was suicidal but perhaps she just got a whiff of something. Thankfully the car stopped and she survived 😮💨
There should be warning signs to keep dogs on their leads or the turret points should be raised to a level where dogs won't be enticed to leap.
Ultimately we can't blame dogs, owners must be cautious and the people in control of what's done with the bridge are responsible. It is a beautiful bridge and having a look over the edge is tempting, but those turrets look particularly dangerous so something should be done about that.
My German shepherd has a great recall, I rarely walk her on the lead, recently we saw a rabbit on the golf course and she ran after it like hell, out of sight and wouldn't return when I shouted her. It took her around 5 minutes to return.
Something similar may have happened to these dogs, perhaps saw a squirrel
Bob should have a net on both sides of the bridge and warning signs to people walking the dogs to keep them on a lead at all times to save these dogs. I don't believe they are seeing something but thinking this is a wall into the woods.
This reminds me of an incident that occurred when I was stationed at Chatham Police Station when a police dog jumped to its death over the parapet of the top floor of a multi-storey car park.
A guy threw his baby off it.
Have heard of this before. No, myths are just stories that one or two have created & others wish to continue for money.🤷♀️
