I first played this piece when I was in middle school back in spring if 93 and immediately fell in love with it. I knew then that when I became a band director I would make this piece a frequent selection for my concerts. It still today is one of my absolute favorite tunes to conduct and just listen to. Your students did a fantastic job of breathing life into the pages of notes. I thoroughly enjoyed each measure! Well done!
Jonathan, I am the brother (Grant) of the composer Mark Williams. I agree that this band's performance was great! I really enjoyed reading your comment too. Mark tragically passed away in 2008, but his musical legacy lives on. I play in the Cascade Community Band in Washington State, and we are starting to practice "Jackson Lake Overture". It is one of my favorite compositions of Mark's. The piece was the winner of the Western International Band Clinic Gralia Award, which was for the best new band composition of the year (back in the 1980s). About 5 years ago, I started to explore band performance videos of Mark's music on UA-cam, and I was amazed at the huge number of great videos that I found from bands around the world (student & adult bands). I then created a UA-cam channel "The Music Of Mark Williams" and created playlists of the best videos that I could find for Mark's hundreds of compositions and arrangements. And I chose "Jackson Lake Overture" to be the soundtrack for the "Welcome video" for that UA-cam channel. Where is the school at which you are the band director?
@@musicmarkwilliams wow. What an honor. Reading your comment gave me chills. Sad to hear about your brother. This overture has been tattooed in my memory since 92' when I performed it with the advanced band at Kelly High School in Chicago. I didn't know how to read notes at the time but my love for music made me memorize my 2nd trumpet notes. Then I memorized every detail of all the instruments. At the age of 16 this overture made me who I am now. I am a dj, I form part of a musical band that plays various Latin genres and rhythms. I am the music director for my church choir. I respect the music teachers that lead me on the right path and the notes of this tremendous overture that showed me the crescendo dynamics combo of harmonies and most importantly, feeling. May God have your brother in Holy Glory.
I have to play this song in my band this year lol! im in ewa makai mid skooool. I am a 1st alto saxaphone and i am still getting confused at the part of the music whenever the time signature turns into 3/4 ( it hard 4 meh plz don't judge )(> -

I played this overture, 2nd trumpet, back in 94'. Thanks to Mr Stec & Mr. Novolich from Kelly High School in Chicago, I am the musician I am now.
We played in the same band.
@@DionteJelks you play 1rst trumpet and were on the football team if I remember correctly right?
I'm getting to play this on March 12th 2024 for a concert, honestly sounds so good.
I just love how 2:08 sounds like. Calm and soothing.
Doing this in my advanced band and this really helped me hear what it's opposed to sound like, thanks.

I go to ewa makai too! Apparently I'm not the only one who wanted to hear this song more than we already have in band.
Is it because of how Mr. Miyashiro keeps skipping and stopping us after like 10 seconds when we play?- Or is it because of my horrible playing Lol
I play brass so I was with Mr Iyoki this week and literally every 3 measures we would stop. And if you are first chair then you must be good.
Lol it happens you you guys as well too then (I am not first seat, i am sixth) pfft ;-;
