@jaws666 full UN member status was given to East Germany in 1973 (same time as West germany) by means of Security Council Resolution 335 and official US recognition happened in 1974. Once West Germany's Hallstein Doctrine fell away in 1969, it was just a matter of time that it happened.

An interesting Cold War tidbit: In the early 80's I was an engineer on the "Blue Shuttle" project. The idea was that in the event of an impending nuclear exchange, a number of Space Shuttles, under the command of the US Air Force, would launch into orbit with nuclear weapons on board. They were to serve as a second strike reserve. It never got off the ground, no pun intended, because of scattered management and cost overruns. One of the interesting problems was that the Space Shuttle crawler that transported it from the assembly building to the launch pad was designed for the flat terrain of Florida. To be used at Edwards Air Force Base, the crawler would need to have been able to keep the Shuttle level over gradients in the path between buildings. That turned out to be so hugely expensive that it killed the project.

@@ChineseKiwi yes, as was often the case. Given the context, it's clear what time was being discussed. The armistice was in 1953, and the Cold war ended in 1991. So my question was not 'in which part of the 1950's were the Korean people actively engaged in conflict. That's a better question for a video about the Korean war. With respect to the Korean War in 1950, your response would make sense, but that is not what the video alluded to in its general description of the war being "bloody", which is why I asked the question I asked specifically in the way that I asked it.

Regarding McCarthy, I think the publication of the Venona Papers in the 1990s served to confirm much of his concerns about Commies in our government. The awarding of the Nobel Prize to Obama completely undermines the reasons for its existence as Obama had done nothing at the time he received the award.
