  • The 749-foot MV Viking Sky cruise ship lost its engines off the coast of Norway in a storm and rough seas. It called a Mayday at 2PM on March 23, 2019, and five helicopters frantically tried to evacuate the 1,300 passengers and crew, while the ship pitched and rolled in its dangerous anchorage. You will see flying debris and water in the ship. The Viking Ocean Cruise ship was being evacuated by the southern Norway rescue service @HRSSorNorge, CHC Helicopters, and Hovedredningssentralen.

    As of early on March 24, 2019, air evacuations had ceased with 350 people off the ship. The tugs were in place and towing the ship into port, according to Alexus Sheppard @Alexus309. Alexus was a passenger onboard the vessel and along with Rynn Flynn (@RyanDFlynn11) supplied some of the video.

    Before losing its engines near Hustadvika, Norway, the 749-foot long, 47,800 gross ton cruise ship was on a 12-day cruise from Bergen, Norway to Tilbury on the River Thames in England.

    Well done by the Norway (coast guard?)... That had to be an extremely difficult task with winds and waves like that.

    Mechanical problems are common with new vessels. It takes a couple years of shake down for all the sort through warrantied machinery, fix bugs in automated controls, allow for equipment to settle with vibrations, etc. New vessels can actually be terrible to work on maintenance wise.

    Was on a cruise last month. Boat engines died in the middle of the ocean. We were down for about 6 hours. Come to find out it wasn’t the first time the ship had gone broke down. We finally got going and got back to port. We got off the ship and they loaded the ship with the new guests. Acted like nothing happened! These boats are junk! And when they say new. It’s really just an old ship, they rebuilt most of the time and renamed! These ships need back-up motors for things like this! They want all this money then they need to put some of it back into their ships! I wouldn’t be surprised if that boat has broke down for a few hours before and this isn’t the first time it’s had issues! They going to pay big time for being cheap and not fixing/ maintaining their equipment!

    Март - не сезон для круизов по Норвегии, тем более для лайнеров не экспедиционного класса.
    Круизы в этом регионе обычно совершаются летом, когда риск штормов минимален.
    Туристам к выбору региона плавания и лайнера лучше ведь подходить более ответственно, взвешивая нюансы. Либо нужно перед покупкой путевок консультироваться с работниками круизной отрасли :)

    My hunter usto have engine problems if i went threw wrough seas i found the problem to be in the exhaust loop

    • @SlowBoatSailing
      @SlowBoatSailing  5 років тому +1

      Yeah, rough seas = air problems in the fuel line. I did not think that would be an issue for these ships, but, if it is, then they need to check the weather better. Nigel Calder writes about the water siphoning issue. We installed two loops to prevent it and an exhaust flap.

    NOT 1300 evacuated...only SOME...took a long time for even some to be evacuated. Injured were taken off....others stayed on until made it until port.

      They would have evacuated everyone if they did not get the engines working first. It takes a long time to transport 1,300 by helicopter in a gale.
