A lot of comments calling this thing a “toy”, or a waste of money. It’s truly an incredible & inspirational creative tool for guitar. And the quality of the algorithms are second to NONE. But those who don’t “get it”, definitely shouldn’t get it.

This reminds me of a recent tweet from Bob Rock the legendary engineer and producer. Bob engineered Bon Jovi ‘s Slippery When Wet and Aerosmith’s Permanent Vacation as well as producing albums for Loverboy, Krokus, Chilliwack, The Cult, Motley Crue, Metallica, Cher, Michael Buble, David Lee Roth, Bryan Adams, Joan Jett, Bush, Nelly Furtado, Richie Sambora, Survivor, The Offspring, Black Veil Brides etc, etc, etc. It’s fair to say that Bob knows a thing or two about recording, engineering and producing great guitar sounds. A frustrated and exasperated Bob Rock tweeted that he had just spent an entire day in the studio trying to get the semblance of a half decent recorded guitar sound out of a well know bands guitar players algorithmic effects unit. Essentially Bob’s plea and open message to all guitar players aspiring to become recording artists was ; invest in a decent amp, minimal pedals , work at getting your sound, this will give engineers and producers lots of scope to engineer, record and produce your sound. Undoubtedly good advice and worth bearing in mind depending on your aspirations and circumstances as a player.

Your reviews are great. Always doing a product demo that makes sense to me. I've had my H9 for a few days and it's unbelievable. I ordered it directly from Eventide, since US retailers were on waiting lists. This pedal has been around for some time but I think the users needed time to catch up with what Eventide was giving them. Also, creating a core pedal was a great idea. People can get into it at their own pace and budget. Although, buying the harmonizer level was perfect for me. loaded with 9 algorithms and 100 presets was great. Then, on top of that they give you a free algorithm as a gift. BRAVO to you and your demos.

Bought the H9Max like 8 years ago... Eventide continues to put out amazing new algorithms all the time, so you just up date and get them. It’s just amazing... although I end up funking around with all the awesome sounds and tones and NOT practicing.... 😂 LOVE IT! I may get the cheaper version and just slave my Max to it. Eventide and EHX are my two favorite effects manufactures. Lover them both.

I am a 40 year old guitar player - i do understand it fully and i pass everything that works in coop with phones, tablets, laptops or any kind of MacOS, Windows, Android or other Linux-driven devices.
Wrong update, a virus, 3rd-party software which gets in conflict with the operating system or anything like that - and your gig is f... up.
None!! of my pedals, amp's and what so ever is allowed to have dependencies with computers. NONE!
Therefore i use an Audio-Interface which already have its problems on Linux and i just have to wait for a couple of month and it will be "not longer supported" on Windows too. Don't buy sleepless night's.

John James McCartney I feel your pain. I am an old school pedal person and several times I have tried to understand these complex pedals like the H9, Line 6 Helix, etc and all that menu diving confuses and frustrates me. The closest I have come to using complex pedals are the smaller Strymon (Flint, Deco, Sunset, Brigadier etc) and the Source Audio One series. The latter are MiDI controllable if you want that option.
What do you use at this moment?
The TC Plethora looks like a good easy to use multi effect option.

The only downside to the H9 that I can think of is that it requires a PhD in advanced geekery to fully explore the potential of this unit. I have two of these and I ended up buying an expression pedal to go with it. I find that using the app, together with MIDI is essential to fully appreciate the H9. The use of a notebook can be quite handy when exploring the myriad of choices.
The real beauty of the H9 is that, used in conjunction with a MIDI based switcher and an iPad or iPhone (on a stand,) sounds can be tweaked on the fly, unlike the majority of stomp boxes, where one has to bend down to change parameters.
I learned a few things from this presentation, and although expensive, a lot cheaper than going down the rabbit hole of multiple pedals.

I can tell many aren't understanding what this product represents. Think of it a a single module version of the H9000 which is found in almost every studio worldwide. The cost is actually reasonable for studio quality algorithms, remember Eventide has been used on some portion of almost every album you've likely purchased. Yes, the presets are wayyyy over the top, don't let that marketing fool you that it's too complex...they are just presets of the particular algorithm, nothing else. There really aren't a ton of algos, so don't let the preset thing make it out more than it is.
To use the H9's quickly on your pedalboard, first decide what effect you care to use, say reverb. Select the algorithm type that likely suits, say a "room" type for example. When the first preset pops up, immediately turn the Mix down to at least 20% or less and give it a whirl, then adjust any other parameters to taste, then move on. Use this methodology across the board and it's fast giving you studio grade effects. I use one exclusively for delays and the other exclusively for reverbs. I personally stay away from the fuzzes and over-the-top-modulation FX for standard setlists. Sometimes I'll use the one H9 I have normally set on delays to function as a mild chorus or flanger as needed via a small 4-switch midi footswitch on the same pedalboard.
Sorry for the long post but most vids I've seen over the years on this unit only have folks running through the presets which (as with most multi-FX units for at least 3 decades) are generally worthless and impractical unless your Frank Zappa or similar. Bottom line, setup your wanted effect like you would any other previous model you've used in the past. Compare the audio quality of both and you'll hear why the core algorithms are in a league above the budget product lines. If you don't care about the quality of the effects you use in your signal chain, then you'd certainly be overpaying for this unit, no doubt. Otherwise you're highly likely to be very impressed. Regards.

    Hi Henning!
This (as with all of your videos) was a great review and has helped me make up my mind as to whether I’d want to get the H9 or not.
I’m impressed that you didn’t say “shit-ton of effects” more often though!
In your opinion do you think there’s anything that’s come out since you made this video with a similar price range or less that’s better quality than the H9?

the UA effects are great, but only 4 algorithms per pedal.
the H9 is still the king of the many sounds in super high quality

Now that you're working with Eventide try to get their newest delay pedal "Rose" for a full review. It's kind of a hybrid design analog/digital. Stay safe and be good, cheers.

Hello, I just purchased a H9 pedal. Great video about the control program and what the pedal can do. When hooking this up to a computer, what was needed to make this work? I.E. @ midi interface and cables? Help!

Haven't gone to my BT settings on my H9Core or H9Max in over a year. CANNOT connect with BT now. Very frustrationg. I even updated with 'updater' and still no connection via bt which makes them useless....almost.

Looking at the face plates they all look the same. How do you distinguish between the Max, Core and Standard units? What is the main difference between the three? How do they sound when using with keyboard/synths? Thanks in advance.

I have really mixed feelings about this pedal - I've owned one for about five years now, an H9 max - the most expensive pedal (of around 30 or so) on my board and - if there was one pedal and only one that I could take to a deserted island, it would be this one. In the real world, however, I barely use the thing. There are 500 presets that you have to access through an ipad or your computer, you can only have 100 on the pedal itself, and the readout has no usable info on what sound you've called up. You have to, realistically, print out what presets you've got called up so you can tell what the hell is even going on. It's just too damn hard to use in any realistic/real time way. OTOH, the sounds that I do end up using are some of the best out there. So I've kept it, despite constantly thinking about selling it - just in case that one sound I stumble on, after hours of dicking around with the thing - ends up being the one I use.

Paul, I agree totally! But don't give up.
It can take hours of tweaking, but all of a sudden when you least expect it, you find gold in your tinkering, and you can hear angels singing. My tendency is to over-tweak, taking too much time. Sometimes I actually practice my guitar.
You do have to make your preset list, obviously, and get familiar with what you've saved. But you can also save the preset and just write it down on a piece of paper.
"Oh wow, I like this one."
Then don't lose the paper. I do both. Preset lists, and paper. It's a quick easy look to remember what you liked so well.
Definitely time consuming, no doubt. But there's gold in them thar hills.

@paul This is 100 thousand % the way I feel. I'm in similar situation. Had my H9 max for about 5 or 6 years and I'm currently using 2 reverb settings. TWO?!?! Out of everything on there, I've come down to only using two (I have 4 or 5 dialed in). About 2 months ago I decided to sit down and really learn the thing a bit more and work really hard to dial in some settings and make it usable in live setting, and I came up with two (with hot switches dialed in too). I will say that those reverbs I've dialed in are awesome so I'm not getting rid of it anytime soon. But if I had to go back in time and choose between the H9 or something different, I would have totally gone with a reverb only pedal like the Strymon BigSky.

    - "Black hole is amazing - its starting without me...!"
I have an H9 Max - so I feel I'm wasting it unless I buy a second H9 to link with it...
So should I get a Line6 Go Pod or keep my Digitech FX board and add another H9...?
Two linked H9 could be awesome plugged into 2 FX sends.

These things are like sirens. They look and sound beautiful, but will kill you in the end... I can see how great they are if you are recording and need a billion different sounds, or if you have an awesome midi controlled pedalboard and the time to fiddle around with the presents (or a tech to do it for you). I somehow still prefer having one good pedal of each effect... 🤔

When I see reviews of reverb or delays pedals around 3-400$ I think ''if only the guy knew about Eventide, TC electronics or Lexicon''...for the same price they have a Multi effect without accumulated noises-hum-buzzes etc, between pedals. I miss the old day when all these units where rack mounted...now they are all on the floor in the dirt...maybe that's the goal, they won't last as long as the old units because of that and they will sell more? Thank you for reviewing Multi effects. You should go back in time and review and compare all the old units you can find for peanuts on Reverb and Ebay, the kids would have they jaws dropped to the floor if you compare a Lexicon MX200 (on Ebay around 150$ used right now) vs a ''high end boutique'' pedal selling for 400$ that sound like shit.
