President Richard Radio - 10 Meter / CB Radio? - Unboxing and Review

  • The President Richard is a mobile 10 meter HAM radio in its standard form. If unlocked it can also cover the 11 meter (CB Radio) and 12 meter bands. This radio is made by the President Electronics Group which is a USA originating company that has a European presence and a head office for Europe in France.
    President have made a great looking, simple to operate, old-school style radio but its identity is confused and is more of a CB radio that covers the 10 and 12 meter bands. Its high power output is what will attract its followers but caution must be taken with its legality to operate in your region.
    This is an unboxing and first impressions video to help you decide if the President Richard is the radio for you.

    Hi MJ7NLK. Great upload and very interesting and informative. Loved ever bit of it. I received my SWR meter for my President Randy and i purchased from Knights the better antenna 50cm so can't wait to see your review of that. I managed to get my SWR down to 1.5, or just under 2 so i was reasonably happy with that. Keep up the great work. Cheers kind regards from Richard .

      Hi Richard, glad to hear your SWR is nice and low, well done. I hope you didn't have to cut too much off the antenna :-). Next video will most likely be the range test. Am interested to see if the 50cm makes much of a difference. All the very best

    I was on the rug for years back in the 90s I had a Harrier Homebase had a cobra 148 president Lincoln 5star loads of box’s . been 10 7 for 30 years now . I’m amazed to see the people are still interested I wouldn’t mind a box again .

      Hi Phimister, sounds like you had quite a setup back in the day. Most of the action is on SSB these days although in some areas DSB is still busy but nothing like in the 80's and early 90's. The President Lincoln 2+ would be a good choice or the President McKinley if your looking to hit the waves again. The Richard is a brilliant radio but needs expanding for CB frequencies so worth looking at the Walker 2 which is essentially the same radio but CB out of the box although neither the Richard or Walker 2 have SSB. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment, much appreciated.

    Hi 👋
    Just wanted to say I’ve been enjoying the videos.
    Although if I’m going to use radio in a shtf situation I’m not going to be worried about what power or frequencies I’m using and especially not going to be bothered about a license 😮😂
    Not that many people seem to be bothered now. I use my scanner to listen to a number of people on supposedly ham frequency radio chatter away the nights!😂

    • @NLKMediaGroup
      @NLKMediaGroup  Рік тому

      Hi John, thanks for commenting and for watching. In a SHTF situation the gloves are off and anyone can use. I guess it’s down to knowing your equipment, how to use it, and where to start in trying to communicate with people. It's difficult to get hands on experience without getting licensed. The Richard is a very versatile radio and one of my favourites. It’s just has everything in the right place, is simple to use and powerful with a really good receiver. I do wish President would make a Richard 2 and include SSB but it would no doubt double the price. You can pick up a Richard for £170 which is a lot of radio for the money. Which scanner do you use? I have an ICOM IC-R30 which works well but the menu system is not the best. Interested in what other options are around and real world recommendations. All the best

      The President Richard is a lovely radio. It has everything in the right place and is super easy to use and powerful too. US weather channels are on 162.400 to 162.550 MHz and the Richard is a 10 meter band radio but can be expanded to cover 10 and 11 meter but not as high as 162MHz. Most of the radios with Weather Alert feature have an additional board for those frequencies. We don't have Weather Alert in Europe so our versions don't have it. Happy new year and all the best for 2024

    and it is not true that the company was founded in the USA, it is a French company and was founded in France in 1968, its branches are in different countries, including the USA; as information is released into the world that is watched by a lot of people who consider you an expert on the subject and often treat the information provided here as oracles, out of respect for these people it would be appropriate to carefully check the information you want to present; Other than that, nice videos, and interesting. greetings

      Hi Johan, Please watch later videos as this topic has been cleared up. President Electronics is a French company and their EU website had a nice timeline on the "Presentation - The Group" page. It shows that the Group was created in 1978 but prior to this in 1976 it says "First importation of the President brand in Europe from the USA". It does not elaborate on what this means but would explain why a French company names its radios after US Presidents. What they imported and what constitutes "brand" in this case I dont know but the origins of the brand was imported from the USA. All very confusing but that aside they make very good radios. They also have an office in the US (Florida) which further compounds the problem of appearing like its US based and branched to France when in fact its the other way around. An initial French radio company was founded by Claude & Lysiane Schmitz in Paris in 1969, Albert Bertrana joined them in 1973, a factory for making microphones was setup in Barcelona in 1975, imported the brand in 1976 from the USA and the Group was setup in 1978 then based in Balaruc, South of France.
      Thanks for watching and for commenting. Always good to clear these things up. All the very best

    Hello MJ7NLK, I really like this old style Ham “CB” radio’s, after seeing your excellent review here, I decided I want one. However, I do not need the high power output, do you know if this radio can be adjusted (in a service menu?) to more legal-ish output settings?

    • @NLKMediaGroup
      @NLKMediaGroup  Рік тому

      Hi Hans, the President Richard has an RF gain dial so you can control the power output easily by just turning it up or down on the front of the radio. The Richard is a 10 Meter radio and HAM out of the box but can cover CB when expanded. The President Walker 2 is essentially the same radio but CB out of the box but can be expanded to cover 10 Meters. So if your wanting primarily CB then the Walker is the best option. Neither radios have single side band and if that is important to you then Mc Kinley or the Mighty Lincoln 2 plus is worth considering. I have two Richards and one Walker 2, it’s a lovely radio. All the best and thanks for watching.

      Have a look at the new George 2, lovely radio, posted a video on this a few days ago. The Richard is great and both of mine remain modified regardless of no power so not seen the issue you mention. George 2 would be my recommendation for CB bands or maybe the Lincoln 2 plus if your wanting SSB. If not, then Walker 2 (which is a Richard but CB out the box) is great.

    Well sir thank you for the info!! Sums up the question I had , would it be a good cb for a trucker? I’m guessing the cobra 29 lx is a 12 meter? I know nothing lol but I certainly don’t want to get a better radio if I don’t know what I’m doing .

    • @NLKMediaGroup
      @NLKMediaGroup  Рік тому +1

      Hi Bobby, thanks for watching. The Cobra 29 LX is a CB radio so 11-meter band. The President Richard is a 10-Meter radio and will only work on the 11-meter band when expanded. Here in the UK and EU we have different versions of the radios then are available in the US (assuming you're in the US as you mention Cobra) so getting an EU spec Richard may be a challenge. There are lots of new radios hitting the US market now due to FM being legalised by the FCC. The President Walker 3 FCC is worth a look as its basically a CB legal variant of the Richard tweaked for the US and Canadian market. The President McKinley is also worth looking at if you want to future proof yourself and get a radio with SSB (single side band) feature which the Richard and Walker do not have. The McKinley is a bit fiddlier to use due to the front facing speaker and the limited space for buttons but is a fine radio. I hope this helps and if you are based in the EU then the Walker 2 is the CB legal variant of the Richard and both radios can be expanded to cover the full range (they are basically the same radio, one is type approved for CB (Walker 2) and the other for Ham (Richard), although the Richard is capable of a higher output). Hope this helps, all the best.

    The Richard is a great mobile AM/FM radio packed with features, roger beep, echo etc and a mic choice of electret or dynamic. The size is perfect with having the mic socket at the front. A couple of other UA-camrs have said if the richard had sidebands it for them would be the closest to perfect CB in their opinion.

      Yes they are a French company, founded in 1969 and they imported the brand in 1976 and have been making CB radios since then. When you think about it, it doesnt make much sense for a French company to name all of their radios after US presidents.
