The writing was the big thing with me. There's SO much forced humor. It's like they were trying to do the Citadel DLC type thing without having earned it. It didn't earn it with the time and weight of the choices that got us there. And it certainly didn't earn it with the characters.

@@Slayer398 I saw some analysis of the Asari models and why they looked as bad as they do, apparently it's mostly down to the texture and layering. In ME1-3 there is only 1 asari body and face model, which is that of Liara, Samara/Morinth is the only exception. The difference being that for skin textures, the OT used a gray base model and applied colored textures to it along with some unique shading, I don't understand it completely but it is able to portray much more variance this way. Andromeda uses only one Asari body and face as well (Except PeeBee) but the base model is Blue, being painted on with some markings rather than different skin colors and shading, so they all look much more similar than the Asari of the OT. Andromeda also has a problem with the female humanoids where all the necks are too thin for the size of the heads.

I believe it was a loyalty mission where it involved boarding a ship and there’s a scene involving communication with the enemy and an airlock being open and almost sucking your team into space. That section had me laughing out loud but you are correct, the humour wasn’t always on mark.

I agree. I think the main problem with the game isn't so much the game itself but that the trilogy came before it. The story and characters are somewhat derivative of what we'd already experienced. However, if this is someone's introduction to a Mass Effect game, I reckon it's pretty solid. I believe the gameplay and environments are probably superior to the trilogy and so with some quality DLC/expansions, it had the potential to be right up there with some of Bioware's best work. It'll be interesting to see what Bioware do with the new instalment, especially with Starfield coming out and how they might react to that.

I've personally found I like ME3 combat just a little better than Andromeda, Something I realized about 40-50 hours into andromeda is that there is a bunch of animation delays after your control inputs, ie. your gun fires a couple frames after you press the button. There are a couple other things like that with relation to that. I do find the mobility in combat to be extremely fun to play. The only thing I cannot forgive Andromeda for is removing the squad power controls, that shit is terrible, it's like having ME1 squad mate effectiveness again.

While the combat can be fun on it's own, this isn't what I'm looking for when it comes to Mass Effect. The limitation to 3 skills works in MP, but it's not enough in SP. And the fact that I can't command my squad properly (no pause function) is a big step back. At least for me.

Couldn't agree more, especially playing recently. The 3 powers are so frustrating! not controlling the squad was one of my favourite features of the OT being part of a team! It also added to the replayability of the games doing missions with different squad members! Not controlling when squad members use the powers or what guns they use just wasn't good! Also, making the ammo types a consumable was such a bad move

No you’re not. It was actually a good game people just don’t know what they want anymore. Maybe it’s because I played legendary edition this year and andromeda now and not on launch. Sure the choices and story could’ve been slightly more impactful, but overall I loved the crafting, the fact that we sent people 600 years across the universe to another galaxy, where we are tasked with finding suitable homes in case of “a reaper attack” let’s say. The angara are a fun new species though raw in terms of overall depth. The combat is a change that takes an adjustment but that’s just the result of modernization, and I loved the jumping hovering fights.

The gameplay is fun but it's still horribly balanced. Unlike the original trilogy, the only playstyle viable in Andromeda on insanity mode is a combo master or soldier. If you try to vanguard charge and nova on insanity in andromeda, you get mowed down instantly.
So while I like the jump jets and stuff, I don't like the playstyle balancing. I honestly prefer the playstyle of the original trilogy. Choosing a build and sticking to it and having ALL builds be viable for insanity. It also makes the game replayable. Being able to instantly change your build in andromeda not only makes it unplayable for multiple playthroughs, but most builds aren't even viable on insanity in the first place!

It has some issues with the writing and the open worlds can get a bit boring from time to time, but overall it's one of the most fun experiences I've had on the PS4. Gameplay is great (possibly best in the series), soundtrack is great, sense of exploration is great. The changes to the dialogue system and removal of paragon/renegade was risky, but I think it worked perfectly for a game about someone thrown into a leadership role that they weren't prepared for. Balancing your behaviour between rational and emotional, trying to keep a level head. It's a solid 7/10 game that was just never capable of living up to the original trilogy.

I understand it, but if we looked at Andromeda as the Mass Effect 1 of a new set of games, then I think it would've had a better chance.

A fun but flawed game that showed a lot of promise but couldn't get out of in-office politics (By this I mean how the Montreal and Edmonton studios could not manage a clear vision for this project.) To touch a little on the tone system, it could've gone the route of DA2 where your character picks up the tone over the course of the game through your choices. But unfortunately, it's another idea that fell to the wayside.

The trick is to not stay and clear an entire planet but to move along with the story, it'll tell where you need to go and when and bring you back to finish up naturally. The game really needs level suggestions for the quest list. Not for difficulty but for continuity. The second trick is to realize out of the box, that this isn't an evolution of ME3 but a direct evolution of ME1. Once you get Profile Switching down, the combat is really fun on the hardest difficulty. Taking away control of the party members away is something you'll get used to but never appreciate though.

I actually just finished up andromeda last month, and I gotta say I truly enjoyed it. Like you said, the combat is extremely fun and satisfying and an excellent improvement on the trilogy. The issue in single player is the lack of enemy variety. Not surprising tho. The story is kinda generic at first but it for me picked up and became pretty interesting. The only characters I really liked was Drack, Suvi and my female rider. I made my own rider because I did not like biowares female rider. Definitely it’s writing and story are it’s weakest points, but it’s fun. Definitely so when you consider I did play the game after as many fixes as BioWare could muster, and the fact I only paid $7. Still, if you really love mass effect and haven’t played andromeda, wait for sale and play it. I have no regrets and may even play again in the future. Let me be clear, I never played mass effect until the legendary edition. Before that I laughed and dogged andromeda and even the original trilogy. But when the legendary edition was announced I got excited. I knew it was highly regarded and for good reason. I played the trilogy twice and I fucking loved ever second and will play it again. So I wanted more and played andromeda. I clearly have a different opinion of it now.

    Noice video! (Y)
The story starting is perfect, I've researched a bit before making a series (and I still have the save to continue), and also in game for in-character knowledge.
The project was made between Mass Effect 2-3 timeline, when it was possible that the Reapers will pick the Milky Way clean of biological life again.
It's not widely advertised but could be put together from secret notes that it was put together quickly with unconventional resources (like Cerberus, and forbidden AI experiment on you) to possibly save the last of intelligent biological life and technological knowledge into another galaxy.
My first surprise (after getting a morning coffee and toilet) was that effectively I am the parent of a newborn, an AI which sees what I do all the time, learning from it.
    Out-of-character I liked it a lot.
For most of the time I solved some problems with the game in-character - for example only I was talking about palinka (a strong, alcoholic drink from Mordor, especially törkölypálinka which is famously bad tourist trap), and there was an NPC with pathing problems beside where I've landed, so I ackowledged her as a consumer, like our stonefaced woman boss on the Nexus, which I knew was from hangover.
Yes in my mistranslated misadventures I enjoy altering translation. :P
So the main enemy boss quickly got a nickname "Keyringhead".
    My main problem were:
-the unskippable animations while exploring the galaxy you've mentioned
-this galactic community was just a reskin of our home; money, pubs, police (for example faction favour point would interest me better than mere money, especially befriending the Enemy and getting controlled mutations)
-there was no real end to strive for, just when the evil one first escapes beaten and warns us of an even greater danger cliche

The combat was definitely fun and planetary graphics were great, but the plot, characters, races, story was so definitely boring, lacking and did nothing for me.
Multiplayer was a lot of fun, mostly because it was entirely focused on combat. Which I find hilarious given this is Mass Effect. The series origin, jank/awkward combat that was acceptable because the plot, characters, story were so gripping. Now the best thing in a Mass Effect game was the part that stripped away all the Mass Effect.
Should have altered the origin story (why they left the Milky Way) and just given the game a fresh, new title with zero association to the original series. Might have been better received as it's own thing.

So I have a slightly different take. My first dive into the world of Mass Effect was Andromeda. I also played it after all bug fixes were done so I didn’t see the terrible bugs at their peak. I don’t mind Marvel-type humor and it just didn’t bother me here in Andromeda. Matty is right, the gameplay is top-freaking-notch. I mean that alone is what drew me in.
Fast-forward to today. Mass Effect Legendary Edition came out so of course I tried it. Characters and story deep and AMAZING. However, a big drawback initially was the combat since I was coming from Andromeda; I’m like, WTF, u can’t jump. Totally threw me off.🤣
There is no doubt that the trilogy is better overall. I loved Shepard and everyone along for the ride. But I guess I have a bit of a softer heart for Andromeda because I started there first and the space-opera vibe was still there and something I hadn’t experienced yet. Again, trilogy is hands down better and a masterpiece, but Andromeda is a good game for what it did bring to the table with roughly only a year and a half of development.

even though I loved 1/2/3 I think andromeda for me was better then the original. the story wasn't all that amazing like 1/2/3 but you have to realise me 1/2/3 was a whole big story inside of 3 FUCKIGN games. imagine if andromeda actually got a trilogy out of it? Would have been 10x better.

I played the game in march and I really liked it, solid gameplay, good grapchics, the story is not the best but is interesting and I loved the characters, sure the choices you make dont matter and the open world is too big, but the game doesn't deserve all the hate. I genuinely want a Mass Effect Andromeda 2 rather than Mass Effect 4

I remember pre ordering that game. Last time I ever pre ordered a game. Was a pretty good game in terms of gameplay, but the story was so painfully mediocre. The jet pack and advanced movement, as well as more freedom to mix and match abilities was really cool. I know it’s completely unrealistic, but if they remade the original games in the andromeda game engine, I would definitely pay a lotta money for that

Well that’s probably never going to happen because the originals were on the unreal engine and Andromeda was on Frosbite which probably why it’s glitches was bad because Frosbite was made for Battlefield and Battlefront but EA forced all their developers to use the Frosbite. I’m pretty sure the rumor now is the newer mass effect will return the unreal engine

Andromeda didn't deserve the hate it got. Ppl mad bc it wasn't the Normandy grew, if you want that grew then replay the original games. Sometimes its good to get some new characters and new experiences.
All the memebers of the Tempest are interesting or at least funny(looking at you Liam).
Cora is potentially the Illusive Man's daughter. Cerberus is likely the secret benefactor.
Jaal is pretty cool and comes from a new, interesting race.
Vetra is pretty cool, nice to have a female Turian in our team.
Its hard to screw up a Krogan character, so Drack was an easy character to like. Also his clan had been seen and mentioned in ME2 and ME3.
Peebe is hit or miss. You either like her or find her really annoying. Kinda like Sara in Dragon Age Inquisition.
Support characters like Kandros, he's Nyreen's cousin. Nyreen being the female Turian we help with Aria in the Omega DLC.
    Suvi is adorable.
    Kallo is ok.
The brother-sister dynamic for the Ryder twins is ok but was done better in DA2.
    The face animations drama:
ME1, ME2, and ME3 had some weird animations as well. So does Fromsoft games, Bethesda games, and don't get me started on Horizon Zero Dawn.
Combat might be the best combat of any of the ME games.
Story was where the game kinda lacked for me, but a lot of that can be attributed to EA rushing the game and it being incomplete since there were planned DLC that got cancelled.
A lot of easter eggs were cool, like meeting Zaheed's son. There is a family you meet that reference the overlord dlc from ME2.
Game had a lot of good ideas, good plans, good templates. Execution was the problem. But again a lot of that can be blamed on their publisher. The concept of Andromeda is solid. A lot of reused ideas sure. But again EA. Watch X-Plays video on Anthem and you notice a trend.

No need to play for me. I actually really like Mass Effect Andromeda. I didn't mind the story, I wish they had expanded it more and tied up its loose ends - I love the game play - I still play Andromeda and its multiplayer - REGULARLY - In fact, I just finished playing a few rounds of its multiplayer just a couple hours ago. I just wish it had the variety in races, characters, and game objectives that ME3 multiplayer had - which I still play, by the way.

I think it's somewhat unfair to compare Andromeda to the entirety of the trilogy before it, as people seem to love to do. Andromeda really does give those Mass Effect 1 vibes, for better or for worse, where it feels like the start of a series of games. Had DLC expansions &/or sequels been made, I think an Andromeda series could've been great. A single game trying to start a new chapter shouldn't be fully compared to 3 other games with all their DLC's all lumped together at once.
And after playing through the trilogy with LE, I can really see just how many fans happily wear rose tinted goggles when it comes to Mass Effect. The games are really good don't get me wrong, but they are plagued with many of the same or similar graphical, animation, AI, etc. issues that people gave Andromeda hell for. That doesn't excuse Andromeda for having those issues or the state it originally released in, but they've patched many of these issues out & aside from somewhat weaker story/characters it's a fine game.

If the original trilogy of Mass Effect got Dragon Age Inquisition pregnant, Mass Effect Andromeda would be its baby. I picked up MEA about a year ago and have been having a lot of fun playing it. Aside from some animation issues the graphics have held up very well for a game made in 2017. The Multiplayer is the best in the series because of the combat. The writing made some companions weak but all the companion loyalty missions were pretty good and fun to play. It really is a shame that BioWare abandoned the game because even after you finish the game you still have a lot of questions. Questions that could had been answered with a few DLCs. Let’s see how much of Andromeda BioWare will bring to Mass Effect 4.

Andromeda was the first Mass Effect game I ever played. I was aware of the series, but never gave it a try. Andromeda was advertised as a jumping on point for new players to the series, so I figured I’d give it a try maybe a year after it was released (and patched up a bit). I loved it. I thought it was a great game. fun to play, interesting story, so-so characters, great combat. I wanted more, so I bought the first three off the xbox store and played through them. I completely fell in love with them, and actually played the entire trilogy through twice back to back. then I attempted to go back and replay Andromeda a year or so later, and I just couldn’t. It just doesn’t even compare. without context, it was a great game. As part of the Mass Effect series it was kind of a joke.

This game had a chance at being something amazing and if they wernt rushed to push a game out and spent real time developing the characters and made the DLC, it could have been. The gameplay is solid and i actually like the 4 different dialog paths but the reason i think it didnt work as well is that ryder does have a personality its just not a compelling one. Hes not a leader like Shepard. If they ever continue the adronoma story, they should use the same method they did for dragon age and shift the MC perspective to a different character. As for the companions, the only ones i really like are Drack, Vetra, and jaal. Krogans are always great, Vetra is cool but needs to polished (for example, if you ramance her, it doesnt feel like she axtually likes ryder and is more like 'okay'). Jaal is cool but a little limp in his execution. Pheebe is a fun character and i think she matches Ryders energy well but she feels shoe horned on the team. Shes tries to be liara with her knowledge on the remnant but doesnt deliver the same professional energy. Cora is just dull 2d characters and i f*****g hate liam. Liams constant positivity for the initiative contradicts his own negativity for himself. He wants to contribute to colonization but is so annoying i skip past all his dialog.
In a way, ryder being pathfinder ruined his character. The game would have been better if we didnt try to fix the golden worlds but rather focus on killing the kett and helping the initiative along the way.
If we go back to adronoma, we should shift the MC to a soldier fighting the kett and finding new alien allies to fight with. Make the kett a larger threat. Make them compelling. Give us new aliens. Explore who the remnant were and who they were fighting and develop a greater enemy waiting to strike.

If only the 2 bioware studios focused on this game instead of making 2 awful games. We could have had Mass Effect: Anthem - an open world rpg with anthem mech suits and flight plus mass effect trilogy caliber characters and story on top of combining the combat mechanics from both.
But instead we got two straight stinkers from bioware.

Happy to see I wasn’t the only one who truly enjoyed Andromeda a lot. Tbh it was the first mass effect game I played. I prefer gameplay over story for action games(for the most part) the Witcher 3 being the outlier. I recently played the legendary edition of the trilogy and maybe it was ahead of it’s time because it felt so damn clunky. The first game was just running around aimlessly with no idea where to go. The second game had a great story and the third had better combat but Andromeda had the best gameplay. Story was so so. But with gameplay and story combined I’d say it was more enjoyable all around the. The trilogy

My biggest gripe will always be that they rehashed and re-skinned Protheans and Collectors. Plus, when you get there, you're not actually making first contact. In my opinion, if they had the villains be the Angaarans, have Jaal join as a spy originally and then realise these new species aren't so bad and have to fight to be seen as equal and to find peace. OR if it was " we got to the promised land, but it's crumbling due to natural decay, how do we survive now", then you could have the Angaarans fighting for your equipment and your ships to be able to travel to the next galaxy in order to survive. That would have been amazing, and also it would make send for Ryder to be Pathfinder, in reality, MC would never keep the Pathfinder title, they may have the technology but they're untested and would be sidelined as an expert in their field, but they would NOT have sway. If it was life or death in the sense that the planets are dying and can't be saved at all, but you have to pathfind supplies, safe passage, etc, it would lend credence. I will never not be mad about wasted potential.

It shows they tried to mimic the plot of Mass Effect 1 but with gameplay mechanisms they could only dream of 15 years ago. Unfortunalty, the story and characters fall short, meanwhile the original games being lacking in terms of visual quality, the plot made up for it.
The Kett and Archon feel like they tried to copy Saren and the Reapers, and the final part with the Remnant city and Meridian is like the race towards Ilos and the Conduit to the Citadel, but feel extremely generic (though the part about the origins of the Angaran was great) even on their own. Saren had motivations and Reapers were intimidating, but Archon is evil for the sake of being evil and who even cares about the Kett outside the cluster, when we've wrecked the Kett the whole game. With the Reapers, they were hinted to be this ultimate, indestructible form that finally took an entire fleet to be taken down.
