I actually find it really interesting that Natsuki is the only member of the Literature Club who isn't corrupted internally. Monika increases Sayori's depression and Yuri's obsessive behavior. But Natsuki's biggest problem is what has been done to her. She's also the only character who seems able to resist Monika's manipulation, being able to see through Monika's behaviors and being concerned for Yuri. I always found this to be a fascinating creative decision. The most abrasive and aggressive member of the club is actually the most resilient and the hardest to corrupt. Because despite how much more abusive her father is in Act 2, she still doesn't act very different. Natsuki is the only character who is defined more by what's been done to her than by something internally wrong with her. I find her to be the most fascinating character because of the way she manages to stand out among the girls. She may have a very fragile sense of self, but she remains the only character who never fundamentally changes throughout the entire game, despite her situation becoming worse. And in the end, she's the only character left who truly cares for everyone in the club, as Yuri and Monika obsessively focus on you. Natsuki is easily my favorite character in the game. I think the fact that she's so underrated makes us Natsuki fans all the more special. Also as someone whose writing style is remarkably similar to hers, everything she says about writing resonates a lot with me. I feel like I want to crawl through the game and tell her that her writing style is valid and extremely powerful in the right contexts. She'd be a natural dialogue writer, and that's a very difficult skill to master for most writers.
I agree! She used to be my least favorite because I only saw her as a stereotypical tsundere loli trope (Which is silly looking back, since all the characters themselves are tropes). Looking deeper, her character is definitely my favorite. She’s very head strong, caring and genuine. She saw past Monika’s egotistical passive-aggressive ways and called her out on it. While the other girls are sweet on the surface until their hidden flaws and corruptions start to show, Natsuki’s flaws are what she shows on the surface with her kind, caring side hidden until it needs to be shown.
I find it interesting as well! Sure, Natsuki still has her Act 2 moments but it's very brief. Also her neck snapping scene doesn't really count. I find it to be more of Natsuki snapping and the neck thing was just a sprite malfunction or something because the game is already falling apart. Everything goes back to normal after that and Natsuki doesn't really die aside from being deleted after Yuri's death.

I really like how Natsuki separates and is unique from other tsunderes. Sure at first she is a jerk to the MC at first, but overtime she becomes super sweet. Still a little grouchy at times but they're not slapping and punching the MC throughout the entire game every second he breathes. She's grumpy not just because she likes the MC, but because how she's treated at home. Because if you have a character that's just mean and repulsive for no apparent reason, that's just annoying. The dev hints at how she's treated at home and explores her character on why the way she is. And sure you can have characters that can be mean and not explain why, but it can only really work if a character like that doesn't appear much and isn't playing a huge role in every single part of the game, show, book, etc. Because if you have a certain character that's mean and repulsive and has no reason why they're like that and are constantly appearing in every scene, it just becomes annoying and unenjoyable. Unlike other tsunderes I've seen with grouchiness being their whole personality and almost never change, Natsuki actually has personality, depth, and development. She talks to the player like he's a normal person and doesn't _CONSTANTLY_ pull out the "iT'S nOt LiKE i lIKe You oR aNyThING" shtick whenever he speaks. She even invites him to read manga with her and (I'm pretty sure) let him borrow some manga at some point! Even when she starts gaining romantic feelings for him, she doesn't immediately turn away and treat him like dirt; she still enjoys talking to him and shares things with him just like any other normal close friend would do.
@@izaaguilar364 Well now that I look back at my comment you're right, but more of her "tsundere" ish behaviour doesn't only just come from liking the player. In the beginning, she wasn't exactly hostile but more guarded with meeting new people in general like another commenter had said. Like I said in my comment with her home environment with her and her dad being horrible and inescapable which stresses her and causes her to have a hard time forming trusting connections. And in frustration with feeling trapped, she uses her anger to lash out and hide her insecurities and fears, scared to trust anyone in fear of becoming vulnerable and getting in a toxic friendship and making her life harder than it already is. But I can't say she isn't unique.
The reason why so many people hated her even until the end is because they never really saw those reasons behind her personality. Many people don't get the tropes of tsundere and whatnot, and they just played the game because they heard it was good. So when they see this really annoying girl, they're going to avoid her and go for the other 2 options that are actually nice to them. In the end they probably won't go for natsukis path where they actually see why she acts the way she acts. They likely won't even see the papa poem. I actually saw a youtuber play the game on the yuri route and this youtuber really disliked natsuki, and her thoughts only shifted when she saw the papa poem in chapter 2 where she felt bad for judging natsuki. Essentially all it took was that one poem that she might not have even seen to like natsuki, or at least to not hate her so much. I get that natsuki is a good character and all, but to the average player she just might be an annoying brat throughout the entire game. I'm not saying that I think she is as I like her too, but it's definitely understandable if many people dislike her, especially when it's so easy to accidentally play the game without seeing anything related to her backstory.
As someone that grew up with a shall we say "creepy dad" Natsuki just rang out so true to me. Playing the vanilla game the 1st time was so eye opening because I have had and sometimes still do have so many similar reactions as she did. That need to be the best and be seen as the best because it hides so many fears and insecurities; also it keeping people back from us as having to show them any vulerability because we never quite learned who/how to trust others so best to just rely on ourselves.
i haven’t played the game but it was so nice to see a character that has actions that align with their trauma usually they just make mean characters and then say they have trauma despite there being no connection between their trauma and behavior
Yuri is such a perfect foil for Natsuki. Yuri is so mature and eloquent with her words that it makes natsuki look even more childish and immature. When in reality Natsuki is doing nothing out of the ordinary, but her surroundings force a defensive reaction from her leading to her acting childish and immature. It's a feedback loop.
Yuri's an accidental try-hard, which puts more pressure on Natsuki to perform, and ramps up her _defensiveness_ because she's competitive. ...can't match her for _imagination,_ but *can* match her for gritty realism and survival skills.
I loved this video ! Natsuki is maybe the one I like the less physicaly and annoye me when she has her "tsundere" vibes, but it's the one I prefer on the personnality. For exemple, when the game goes crazy she's the one that is the most "sane", probably because of what she's been though she can handle most of what's going on. With more time with the MC or someone than understands her she would probably became the best one.

I mean, she does freak out eventually, but unlike Yuri or Sayori, she doesn't try to take it past a heated conversation. She's just yelling at you; she's not attacking anybody. I think Monika wanted to starve her to death or die from the abuse her father did to her (I at least assume his father never hit her until act 2. This is just an assumption tho), but she is relentless and never let it put her down. She even seems to realize when her rage goes too far when she fights Yuri. Honestly, I'm still mad that Monika basically bullies Natsuki and basically code Yuri to bully/ignore her as well. EVEN if I understand where Monika is coming from now, as someone who got bullied in the past, it's still painful to play through
i headcannon her as someone who is unintentionally mean because that’s all she’s been taught. everyone thinks she’s mean or annoying and never had any true friends besides the ones in the literature club. she really did care for Sayori and Yuri and just wanted to get closer to them because of how much she’s been hurt. she just wants to be able to feel vulnerable with someone, and she feels the literature club provides that. thats why she seems so concerned about Yuri and Sayori.
and even when yuri insults her in act 2 (i think) she is still tries to be a good friend by giving MC a poem that basically says yuri is acting weird please help her and monika is being dismissive about it
Another fantastic analysis. I don't find tsundere characters endearing, but i understand Natsuki being guarded. She is young and not able to escape her situation at the time the story is told. I only hope that anyone with similar traits goes to therapy and confronts these unhealthy defence mechanisms. It's not ok to lash out at others because you haven't dealt with your issues. It's passing on the abuse to other innocent people.
@@chelseathecreativeFox In stories sure, it is a fun archetype for people who are into that sort of thing I guess. It's pretty toxic to treat anyone you don't know like garbage in real life though. And if people are that guarded irl, then they probably don't want weebs hitting on them thinking "oh, they're just like Natsuki."
I’ve always resonated with Natsuki. She reminded me of my younger self so so much and I felt like she is me. The way she tries to be abrasive and rude cause truly she feels small and that there isn’t a way people take her seriously if she isn’t outwardly assertive. I’ve been through the same thing and I’ve responded to my life the same way she does. I see her, and I feel seen. I’ve healed, and am continually working towards a better, truer me. I am working on not letting my demeanour and liking towards cute things change regardless of what people think. It still bothers me being viewed as small and helpless, but I’m working on not letting that define me cause I’ve survived so long and liking cute and “childish” things isn’t a bad thing. it’s such a raw character of what abuse does to kids. Survivors have unique ways to cope and become people who are just continuing to be the in state of “surviving” instead of living. we can get better! And be happier :). Although I still struggle and live in the same situation that hurts me, I’m doing all the work required to be the person I want to be. Natsuki helped me realise what I went through and that I wasn’t just a asshole as a teenager but that I was really trying to be understood whilst being continually disregarded and disrespected.
i really enjoy natsuki's character because she speaks to me. i was abused by various parental figures in ways similar to natsuki and it left me struggling to make friends because i was scared they were going to judge me like they did, so tried to be tougher then i actually am and isolated myself a lot. i didn't grow up in a well off household either, and i still have struggles spending money even if i'm hungry or inconvenienced, i don't even like being gifted nice things anymore to this day, i'm still isolated from the rest of my family, and i don't talk genuinely around my friends anymore, not just because it sometimes feels embarrassing, but also because i feel like i'll upset them by sharing interests with them. i'm convinced no one will like anything i do because of pressures from those figures, so i rarely show any of my talents and hobbies i got really upset seeing natsuki getting called bratty and mean when to me it's always been a trauma response, because i've responded like she has before. hell, i still respond like that at times, and it made me feel like i couldn't get the help i needed because i'm too "abrasive". i'm still treated like that by my sister, despite her being the reason my mental health is derailing and going back to my "natsuki mindset" natsuki isn't supposed to be a nice and easy-to-talk-to character, because that's the reality of the situation; abuse can morph into negative coping mechanisms, people can respond similarly in real life. her entire character is a cry for help, and unlike me, who's lucky enough to be able to go to therapy, natsuki can't. you can't fix any of the characters, and that applies very well to natsuki i'm happy to see this video, it makes me feel more understood. i wish i wasn't around the ddlc hype in it's release days so i didn't have to see all those stuff said about her (and me by association). i'm glad people are starting to love her character, thanks for the video 👍
I don't understsnd why she gets so much hate. Natsuki was always my favorite. I think a lpt of people may just have a lack of understanding of people with anger issues, or who are initially anything other than ideally welcoming. But I have experience being that person. The angry person isn't angry because they want to be. It's because they simply feel very deeply, and have most likely had bad experiences that skew that deep well of feelings to an offensive by default. Anger becomes a pointy shield to keep prople away so that the wrong people don't hurt them again. Natsuki actually isn't that hostile though, at least in the Act 1 version of the game. She's more guarded than anything, but the principle still applies I think. She's been bullied for her interests, so her best defense is a good offense as if she perceives shade toward her writing style, she counters by insisting that you just don't get it. And in the case of Yuri's judgement of her seemingly simplistic and cutesy poetry style, she's right. Yuri has an assumption of Natsuki, that her fluffy writing style has no substance. She judges Natsuki based on appearance, and that's exactly what she's defending herself against. On another note too, speaking of defending against assumption based on appearance, I also have just had enough of people making a stink about petite or short female character (or even in some cases, real petite or just short women). They exist, and it's not somehow wrong. Yes the game states that they're all 18. Now even if you disagree, which is fair I guess, Natsuki would probably be 17, or 16 at youngest. That doesn't mean she looks like a child just because she's the smallest. And if she looks like that at 17 or 16, she's probably not going to lool much different in 2 to 5 years. Heck, I knew a girl around my age who was pretty much the same height. Didn't grow much at all from teen years to young adulthood. People need to chill.
Interesting that you mention discourse over her appearance too, considering Monika uses that to try and drive you away from her. First by inserting the notion that Natsuki is small because her dad starves her, then by implying that anyone who's into figures like Natsuki's is a creep.
I really like Natsuki and her relationship with the protag in Act 1. Even if I know if I met her irl she'd probably make me cry and I'd end up avoiding her 😅 And yes, the whole "Natsuki can't possibly be that old" discussion. I knew a person like that in high school. She now has a very mature looking face, but is still as tiny as ever. Just met her mother the other day, she has the same body type and is even shorter. Sometimes people are like that 😂

And I think the game definitely depicts this and most of the things Monika does as bad, even if she herself is supposed to be a sympathetic character. This in particular, is completely unfair to both the women in question, and anybody who is - or could've been - in a relationship with them. As long as everything else is on the up-and-up, simply being with a woman who is small, petite, or youthful is not inherently wrong, and they deserve the freedom to find love just like anybody else.
People seem to forget that small people exist, and that their height does not diminish their maturity. There was an older student at my high school who looked about eight years old. Short, tiny build, chubby face... I assume she had one of those conditions. I always think about her when people talk about this stuff. She drove. The biggest pickup truck. I've ever seen. Did a double take every time I saw her climb into the driver's seat. Either she had a bit of a complex about her height... or the greatest sense of humor.
I would love for you to make a video about the side stories and how they go in depth about characters' relationships and definitely one about Natsuki and Yuri's friendship. They are super interesting when placed together. Also, I adore all of the side stories because of how absolutely cute they are and so genuinely real and raw when it comes to accurate emotions.

Ngl I think Natsuki does have easily one of the saddest scenes in the game, and it’s weirdly her scariest and most iconic, that being her neck snap scene. Now at face value, it seems just something really creepy that Salvato put into the game for a scare, but I think if you look at it closer it becomes actually kinda depressing. She’s practically having a panic attack over everything going on. Her abusive father, Yuri pulling you away from her, Monika turning a blind eye, and just generally weird things going around probably caught up to her in a major way. Her telling the player to not ruin things for you further adds onto her dislike of things not being right for her, and her unhappy conditions. In the dialogue too she also calls Yuri a sick freak, and while in act 2 that isn’t too far fetched, it shows that someone in her conditions, and panicking, can say things they may not mean. And the cherry on top is her repeating, practically begging the main character to play with her. Sure it may just seem like creepy dialogue, but it’s probably her way of wanting help, or comfort. She’s begging you to play with her, to comfort her, to make her feel safe again. That’s why she literally and metaphorically snaps, as she couldn’t take it anymore as she cries bloody tears. She rushes after you, both as a sort of jumpscare but also in a last ditch effort for safety. She wants to be safe with you, as you are practically the last bastion of hope for the club, the club that gives her peace in a way. A place where her abusive father doesn’t beat her and her friends doesn’t disrespect her. That is also why I think she smiles, as she sees you as a hopeful light of protection. But still, it’s a forced smile, because deep down she knows this will only result in nothing as Yuri continues to steal you for herself. But still, she tries to get you, for security. Her panic attack is honestly really sad. The more I think on the scene the more I feel bad for Natsuki. She really doesn’t deserve all the crap she gets in the game’s world :(
I've always preferred Natsuki's writing style to the rest of the club's. Something about simple wording being used to tackle some more complex ideas often leads to it being more impacting to me. I've always really liked eagles can fly because of how it breaks its own formula to accent the point, all with a single line. Maybe it's because my waffling ass couldn't condense my own writing if I had a gun to my head.

natsuki is so me the way i first heard about ddlc was because my friend told me she reminded him of me and at first i was like “it’s probably just because i’m short and like pink” but then i actually played the game myself and realized how deeply i can relate to her personality-wise
Little late, but finally watched It! While I like Sayori and Yuri More than Natsuki, "Because You" Is One of my favorite poems, It makes me cry. She has so much to show! (Btw that video about The paralellisms between Yuri and Natsuki would be amazing!!)
I love how intricately relatable the characters in DDLC are. Dang man, who would of guessed a dating sim (psychological horror) game could play with the emotions of the player.
born a sayori, forced to be a natsuki... for a long time, i was always very open about myself and always cheerful and bubbly and what have you. sayori was my biggest vibe... until things happened in my friend group. i would get teased and judged endlessly about certain things i liked and i felt like i was punished for just being honest. the only way i felt i'd get around without getting hurt is by... well, being abrasive and hiding myself and my interests from everyone. so i became a natsuki. this video made me tear up because of how much natsuki's words at 5:16 mean to me now. i didn't think much of them during my first playthrough, but now that i'm in her shoes... i feel that. dan salvato just poured the most relatable traits into his characters and i love him and his team for that lol and i love the totally-not-cute pink gremlin
I think Natsuki was my favorite. I feel for all of them of course. I don't particularly relate to her situation but it must've been told really well. It's emotionally connecting too, like Syori, my other favorite. And understanding not wanting to always be seen as cute. To be taken seriously, I try to be aware of that. And hey, you look nice today too.
Holy shit dude. As someone who had dealt with two emotionally neglectful parents as well as friend groups that have put me down for my interests, a LOT of the natsuki side story plots and quotes hit really close to home honestly. I’m genuinely at a bit of a lack of words for how well a fictional anime girl managed to accurately portray the after affects and severe psychological damage of childhood abuse, hell, continual abuse. It’s a little heartbreaking honestly Either way I just wanted to say that your video kicks ass and you covered all of your spoken topics respectfully and well worded, congrats mate
I love Natsuki (if it wasn’t obvious from my profile) happy to see she’s getting the love and understanding my lil feisty tsun deserves ❤ I relate to Natsuki a ton, I get bullied for just liking the things I like, my whole family always likes to judge me and my interests (especially ddlc) I try to defend myself but it always results in another stupid argument, at school my friends tease me unhealthily too but I’m too afraid to tell them to stop. My family tell me to change myself completely so I didn’t get bullied anymore (I love my family still they 100% ain’t like dadsuki ewww) I get really attached to fictional characters because I just wished I didn’t have to be around others in this world people suck. I’m not allowed to play my own music quietly in my room now because the rest of my family don’t like it. finally i find SOMEONE who understands natsuki! shes my favorite because shes a much deeper character than most people assume her to be, and honestly i relate a lot to her. for example, ive loved sonic the hedgehog ever since i was a little kid. as a kid, i was mocked by classmates just for liking videogames. i was the only kid who consistently played on her ds between classes. even the boys who played videogames too didnt take me seriously. and i felt mocked by the internet whenever anyone made fun of sonic too. im now an adult and im happy to stay a sonic fan, but man, natsukis reaction to her friends mocking her hits so close to home... anyway, i love your sonic shelf! im rly jealous bc it looks so cool (even without seeing the entire shelf, i can tell u have quite a lot of cool merch!) and i loved the little sonic running across the bottom of the video, and the one about to fall from another shelf. made it look like u have a tiny sonic exploring ur house, it was so cute!!

Since DDLC+, I've grown so much more fond of Natsuki, and feel a lot of kinship with her. Sure, I'm lucky enough to have not had to deal with a home life similar to hers, but everything she puts up with from her friends outside the club and how that makes her feel and act, it's so reminiscent of my own experience with friends in high school. This fellow short anime and manga fan just wants to give the girl a big hug and tell her it's gonna be okay.
Don't forget the comment in the first act of the main game where natsuki comments that she is late for dinner and needs to eat as much as possible or else she won't get any food
so glad you understand her character. she’s my favorite and it’s always bothered me how no one gets it, saying she’s superficial and annoying. but there’s so much more of her personality and backstory for those willing to see it
Wow... Honestly I didn't think it was that deep, cause in my opinion Natsuki is best girl... But I've always looked past most of the stuff that you went over in this video. And the crazy thing to think about it that it's a video game, but the fact that we can understand it all trying to come from Natsuki's point of view. Anyway, love the video Juice!

great video and analysis of Natsuki. I've always loved her character and you did a great job explaining why she is who she is and her behaviors and attitude.
I always likes Natsuki. So I remember when Monika broke her, I was so mad at Monika. Months later, I can somewhat understand Monika suffering too now. But back then, I was so mad with what Monika did to her. Natsuki just wanted to save Yuri.
Meanwhile i don't usually get as upset as Natsuki, even SHE is a character in the game that i can understand. But, seriously? People hate her over her mean personality? I thought she was popular by fans? And she's no bully at all, she's just... Insecure... I do also have the feeling like her when i have my own hobbies and i get upset when somebody judges what i like. And it feels like people say mean stuff behind my back, so i usually demand honesty and i used to be kind, but, just like Natsuki, i got more insecure and try to make sure that others are honest to me. Her dad's an absolutely... How do i put it?... Demon?... So are her fake friends, the friends in the literature club are WAY better friends then those two. I also don't like hugs as much as i used to, and have gotten easily annoyed at times. Yet, i remain kind when i need to, however. Oh, and yes. I also value my stuff and tries to hide them somewhere safe. So it turns out that me and Natsuki are not so different either after all. And how exactly is she the youngest and all of them are having different heights if all of them are 18?
Natsuki is popular to fans... just not with let's players and streamers. Maybe her personality just doesn't mesh well with that kinda content. Like they're only going to play the game "once" so they never really give her a shot due to her initial abrasiveness.
I had a soft spot for Natsuki before I even knew that my mom was abusive. So, I just credited my favoritism to her pink outfits and comparable sanity to the other characters in the game as it progressed.
I played this game and then later traded it in with a stack of others without playing through all the side stories, and after seeing all three of your analysis videos I wish I played through them. I never took the characters as commentary of very real human problems outside of Saori, so seeing this through your lens is eye opening. Thank you for breathing new life into these games
Natsuki is my favorite because I've been where she's been and experienced what she has. She is a very real character and her experiences with struggling to express her feelings and her parental abuse is something I can relate to which is why shes my favourite. What hits particularly hard is her artwork and how she isn't taken seriously because a certain style is so true on so many levels. Shes far and away my favourite because she is the most relatable to me... which may say something about me but lets not talk about that.

I know this video was uploaded a year ago, but I’m so happy to see so many people who like Natsuki too! I was pretty young when this game came out and when it became popular. But I wanted to play it for myself, and I saved myself from any biased opinions on characters. I had a horrible home situation and I immediately resonated with Natsuki’s character. I saw myself, similar reactions and feelings in Natsuki. I knew how she felt, and this sounds kind of lame because she’s a literal video game character but I can’t help it. Someone, a real person, still thought about her story, her actions, and built her character. Violent tendencies, overreactions, defensive behavior, are all things I’ve experienced and felt a lot of times. Seeing so many people hate her character made me rethink about how I act as a person and of course I’ve changed for the better but at the same time this video really made the younger me feel better about herself. This is so corny and cringe but I feel so strong about this subject. 💀
@@gigikk1001 NOOO ITS NOT! and i am glad to read this, lately ive been delving back into ddlc recently and i went from disliking Natsuki when i was younger to totally loving her atp i think she may be my favorite character tied with Sayori. Natsuki is a well constructed and complex character that is all seen to be this “tsundere” everyone calls her meanwhile in reality people are like this too, rude, speaking their intrusive thoughts aloud, never sugarcoating truths, due to the mental diminishing effect of what goes on within those walls in their everyday lives because at the end of the day we learn the harsh behavior from others and build a barrier to protect ourselves from the abusive recognition.

I'm gonna be honest, when I first played DDLC I didn’t like Natsuki as much but then when I went through her past with her dad, especially she became my one of my favorites 🩷
sayori is my favorite due to her genuine and caring personality, as well as her relatability for me, but natsuki’s been a very very close second since i first set eyes on DDLC back in 2017. I see myself in her, being constantly judged for my interests by others, and my strict parents that make me feel like i constantly have to hide what i enjoy just to feel respected by them. i feel the need to always be on the defense and put up a loud, aggressive front whenever i feel disrespected, and it takes a lot for me to open up to people and express myself due to always feeling judged. just like natsuki, I love cute things and i have an artstyle that’s considered “cute”, but i feel like the suffering and the raw feelings i try to depict in the art i make gets overshadowed by the “cuteness”, with people focusing on that instead. I really do feel for her when she says she doesn’t like being called cute, it’s actually pretty condescending in a way, limiting her to a style that’s almost never taken seriously even when she has so much more to her. there’s so much depth to her that gets overlooked, and i wish people could see past her abrasive surface and discover how strong, considerate, and humble she actually is. i strive to be as resilient as her one day, she’s been through so much yet she’s still standing and she’s arguably the most stable mentally of all the other characters even with her circumstances. for that, she will always be one of my favorite fictional characters of all time, up there with sayori for me :)
I remember first playing ddlc. I had already seen some if not most scares but i still eanted to try it. Because it looked like an amazong experiance. (For the record most scares still got me lmao). Durring the first act i already chose natsuki. She seemed like the best one to me. And durring the second act i got the basic play with me stuff and the dad talk stuff. But i also got the special poem from her. And also because she was basically the most normal one durring act 2. I just grew attached to her character. She has been my favourite character from ddlc since then.
It’s almost ironic because even by the players, parallel to her own world, she seems to be the most disregarded of the four and the most “stereotyped” but you show how deep and genuine her character really is. She deserved more appreciation.
I'm watching these all out of order, but I had mentioned in the Yuri analysis video that Yuri and Sayori were my two favorite girls... But it's really just too hard to choose. And I don't think I'll ever have a true "favorite". Yuri & Sayori, both have things I relate with, therefore making them better to my liking. I guess I draw towards people/characters that have similar backstories... Which makes sense I suppose. @17:31 Oof... That one hit too close to home. Natsuki is my favorite in ddlc I didn't expect to have a lot in common with her. For me it's not my friends and family but rather step family and just random people in school I barely know commenting on my style and interests
When I first got to DDLC I used to hate Natsuki (always and even now love Yuri), but when I revisited the entire thing in 2022 (I watched the Game Grumps play through, then bought the game), and my view on her changed, I like her a lot now, she’s only third (behind Yuri and Sayori) but I sympathize with her now, the father’s abuse felt disconnected, but it makes sense, why would she mention it, but what really hooked me was her friend’s story, not because of what I went through, but what I have heard what my sister has gone through with some of her “friends”, and that connected with me better than the first time I viewed it, Yuri is my ego’s worst case scenario, Sayori is my younger side’s cleansed darkness, and Natsuki is my most feared
The interesting thing is that a lot of people who played DDLC thought of Natsuki almost the same way as people around her in the game do. Like "haha, cute short tsundere girl go brrrrrrrrrr", while in reality she's really deep character. Sayori was always my favorite, but something about Natsuki's anger issues and problems with not being taken seriosly hits close to home. Great analysis btw! If there was an anime where Natsuki was the protagonist, there wouldn't be ANY boring episodes at all. Not only is she relatable, but her personality leads to "authentic" responses in any circumstances. I can't even envision Sayori being angry at the player, or Yuri in a silly situation, but Natsuki is just material for anything and everything you could come up with, being the most expressive of the girls in my opinion. Heck, she even managed to make me grow into liking color pink!
TBF, even at the very start natsuki isnt even as bad as a 'normal' tsundere. Normal tsundere is even more bristly and unpleasant. Natsuki is just blunt.

Do an Yuri and a Monika video please! These are so good! This one helped me see Natsuki differently, because before I saw her as an annoying person who prefers to run away from her feelings than just talk about them (and that got on my nerves a lot).
Natsuki is by far the one I understood the least on a first playthrough. Probably because her problems are the ones I can relate to the least. I was never abused by my parents, and my friends have been fine when I had them. Natsuki is the only one who had to spell things out to me. However, once I understood what was going on in her life, I grew to love her just as the rest of the girls. That being said, I could sympathize with her struggles of being the only one in the room with her interests, to the point where I could not share my likes with others growing up. Things are different now, which I am eternally grateful for.
I always loved Natsuki. When I meet people they later on tend to say I seemed so mean at first and I never understood why, I just like keeping my distance until I know someone. It’s only as of the past year I came to recognize my childhood sucked so this character always stuck with me as something I could look to and see myself.

5:53 nobody should have to change themselves for anyone, if they don't like you than they can fuck off. Everyone else including her father are very much in the wrong for not respecting her for who she is. If you feel like you need to change yourself for other people than than the people in question can just leave your life entirely and not be present in it.
One of the saddest parts of life that I find is that when you're feeling good, everyone loves you, but if you're sad for too long, people start to move away from you and that's very lonely.
I've always related to Natsuki most, i remember watching all my favorite youtubers play this game, and I've always felt like i had a connection with her, even though i was "too young" to comprehend the complexity of the game, but i just knew that her character wasn't only "it's not like i like you" and stereotypical tsundere, I've been a small kid all my life, and the creator got it spot on, People never take you seriously, even friends, when you're angry, it's "cute" whenever you want to geniuenly express yourself, you're just seen as childish or cute. it gets so tiring, and the hurt amplifies when you've been through hurtful childhood experiences. you try to find a safeplace, when something ruins that, it's like another part of your life is being shattered. You can't be taken seriously by anyone, other then there. it hurts so so much. it's so hard to show your feelings when they're constantly being overlooked, theres so much more i gotta say, but you explained it perfectly, DDLC has helped me so much, i know it sounds crazy but it has.
I might just be in tears. I've been a major DDLC fan since like 2018, and found it again during 2021 (it actually helped me through a lot of my own issues from the lockdown) but in every playthrough I watched, and every fan blog I saw at the time, Natsuki was always seen at face values and then tossed away, and it hurt SO MUCH as someone who related to her so deeply. I'm not nearly as strong as Natsuki is, even after being through a much much lesser degree of the same stuff, so she's a major inspiration to me on top of being highly relatable. Her poems are HANDS DOWN my absolute favorites in the game, contended exclusively by Bottles, from Sayori. Anyways, im just extremely grateful that there's people out there who see and understand her as well as I do, and value her as a character despite her outward abrasiveness
Actually, after sometimes playing DDLC, when I was a high-schooler I really prefer Yuri over Natsuki because of her designs and timid personality. But now as an adult, I really want to give Natsuki a nice hug and say to her "I adore you as who you are. You don't have to be anyone else you don't want to be just to fit in this bullsheet society" I still like Yuri though just everyone has their unique lovable side and I love the way they are, not just only the outside but also the inside as well. Well, this game is really a masterpiece for my high-school era and I'm still missing the life back then. I wish everyday I could go back...
when i watched playthroughs of DDLC i really connected with natsuki, which was weird to me cuz i hated the regular tsundere archetypes. i think even as a kid i picked up on her depth because of how much i related to her, but looking back on it now she's even more deep than i realized, especially with the new content in doki doki plus! i gotta replay the game tbh

I actually find it really interesting that Natsuki is the only member of the Literature Club who isn't corrupted internally. Monika increases Sayori's depression and Yuri's obsessive behavior. But Natsuki's biggest problem is what has been done to her. She's also the only character who seems able to resist Monika's manipulation, being able to see through Monika's behaviors and being concerned for Yuri. I always found this to be a fascinating creative decision. The most abrasive and aggressive member of the club is actually the most resilient and the hardest to corrupt. Because despite how much more abusive her father is in Act 2, she still doesn't act very different. Natsuki is the only character who is defined more by what's been done to her than by something internally wrong with her. I find her to be the most fascinating character because of the way she manages to stand out among the girls. She may have a very fragile sense of self, but she remains the only character who never fundamentally changes throughout the entire game, despite her situation becoming worse. And in the end, she's the only character left who truly cares for everyone in the club, as Yuri and Monika obsessively focus on you.
Natsuki is easily my favorite character in the game. I think the fact that she's so underrated makes us Natsuki fans all the more special. Also as someone whose writing style is remarkably similar to hers, everything she says about writing resonates a lot with me. I feel like I want to crawl through the game and tell her that her writing style is valid and extremely powerful in the right contexts. She'd be a natural dialogue writer, and that's a very difficult skill to master for most writers.
I agree! She used to be my least favorite because I only saw her as a stereotypical tsundere loli trope (Which is silly looking back, since all the characters themselves are tropes).
Looking deeper, her character is definitely my favorite. She’s very head strong, caring and genuine. She saw past Monika’s egotistical passive-aggressive ways and called her out on it. While the other girls are sweet on the surface until their hidden flaws and corruptions start to show, Natsuki’s flaws are what she shows on the surface with her kind, caring side hidden until it needs to be shown.
I find it interesting as well! Sure, Natsuki still has her Act 2 moments but it's very brief. Also her neck snapping scene doesn't really count. I find it to be more of Natsuki snapping and the neck thing was just a sprite malfunction or something because the game is already falling apart. Everything goes back to normal after that and Natsuki doesn't really die aside from being deleted after Yuri's death.

I really like how Natsuki separates and is unique from other tsunderes. Sure at first she is a jerk to the MC at first, but overtime she becomes super sweet. Still a little grouchy at times but they're not slapping and punching the MC throughout the entire game every second he breathes. She's grumpy not just because she likes the MC, but because how she's treated at home. Because if you have a character that's just mean and repulsive for no apparent reason, that's just annoying. The dev hints at how she's treated at home and explores her character on why the way she is. And sure you can have characters that can be mean and not explain why, but it can only really work if a character like that doesn't appear much and isn't playing a huge role in every single part of the game, show, book, etc. Because if you have a certain character that's mean and repulsive and has no reason why they're like that and are constantly appearing in every scene, it just becomes annoying and unenjoyable. Unlike other tsunderes I've seen with grouchiness being their whole personality and almost never change, Natsuki actually has personality, depth, and development. She talks to the player like he's a normal person and doesn't _CONSTANTLY_ pull out the "iT'S nOt LiKE i lIKe You oR aNyThING" shtick whenever he speaks. She even invites him to read manga with her and (I'm pretty sure) let him borrow some manga at some point! Even when she starts gaining romantic feelings for him, she doesn't immediately turn away and treat him like dirt; she still enjoys talking to him and shares things with him just like any other normal close friend would do.

In the beginning, she wasn't exactly hostile but more guarded with meeting new people in general like another commenter had said. Like I said in my comment with her home environment with her and her dad being horrible and inescapable which stresses her and causes her to have a hard time forming trusting connections. And in frustration with feeling trapped, she uses her anger to lash out and hide her insecurities and fears, scared to trust anyone in fear of becoming vulnerable and getting in a toxic friendship and making her life harder than it already is. But I can't say she isn't unique.

The reason why so many people hated her even until the end is because they never really saw those reasons behind her personality.
Many people don't get the tropes of tsundere and whatnot, and they just played the game because they heard it was good. So when they see this really annoying girl, they're going to avoid her and go for the other 2 options that are actually nice to them. In the end they probably won't go for natsukis path where they actually see why she acts the way she acts. They likely won't even see the papa poem. I actually saw a youtuber play the game on the yuri route and this youtuber really disliked natsuki, and her thoughts only shifted when she saw the papa poem in chapter 2 where she felt bad for judging natsuki. Essentially all it took was that one poem that she might not have even seen to like natsuki, or at least to not hate her so much. I get that natsuki is a good character and all, but to the average player she just might be an annoying brat throughout the entire game. I'm not saying that I think she is as I like her too, but it's definitely understandable if many people dislike her, especially when it's so easy to accidentally play the game without seeing anything related to her backstory.

As someone that grew up with a shall we say "creepy dad" Natsuki just rang out so true to me. Playing the vanilla game the 1st time was so eye opening because I have had and sometimes still do have so many similar reactions as she did. That need to be the best and be seen as the best because it hides so many fears and insecurities; also it keeping people back from us as having to show them any vulerability because we never quite learned who/how to trust others so best to just rely on ourselves.
i haven’t played the game but it was so nice to see a character that has actions that align with their trauma usually they just make mean characters and then say they have trauma despite there being no connection between their trauma and behavior

Yuri is such a perfect foil for Natsuki. Yuri is so mature and eloquent with her words that it makes natsuki look even more childish and immature. When in reality Natsuki is doing nothing out of the ordinary, but her surroundings force a defensive reaction from her leading to her acting childish and immature.
It's a feedback loop.
Yuri's an accidental try-hard, which puts more pressure on Natsuki to perform, and ramps up her _defensiveness_ because she's competitive.
...can't match her for _imagination,_ but *can* match her for gritty realism and survival skills.

Natsuki is maybe the one I like the less physicaly and annoye me when she has her "tsundere" vibes, but it's the one I prefer on the personnality. For exemple, when the game goes crazy she's the one that is the most "sane", probably because of what she's been though she can handle most of what's going on. With more time with the MC or someone than understands her she would probably became the best one.

I think Monika wanted to starve her to death or die from the abuse her father did to her (I at least assume his father never hit her until act 2. This is just an assumption tho), but she is relentless and never let it put her down. She even seems to realize when her rage goes too far when she fights Yuri.
Honestly, I'm still mad that Monika basically bullies Natsuki and basically code Yuri to bully/ignore her as well. EVEN if I understand where Monika is coming from now, as someone who got bullied in the past, it's still painful to play through

i headcannon her as someone who is unintentionally mean because that’s all she’s been taught. everyone thinks she’s mean or annoying and never had any true friends besides the ones in the literature club. she really did care for Sayori and Yuri and just wanted to get closer to them because of how much she’s been hurt. she just wants to be able to feel vulnerable with someone, and she feels the literature club provides that. thats why she seems so concerned about Yuri and Sayori.
and even when yuri insults her in act 2 (i think) she is still tries to be a good friend by giving MC a poem that basically says yuri is acting weird please help her and monika is being dismissive about it
Everyone I know (including myself) seems to have a strong disliking for Natsuki at first, but quickly comes around to loving her.

Another fantastic analysis. I don't find tsundere characters endearing, but i understand Natsuki being guarded. She is young and not able to escape her situation at the time the story is told. I only hope that anyone with similar traits goes to therapy and confronts these unhealthy defence mechanisms. It's not ok to lash out at others because you haven't dealt with your issues. It's passing on the abuse to other innocent people.

I’ve always resonated with Natsuki. She reminded me of my younger self so so much and I felt like she is me. The way she tries to be abrasive and rude cause truly she feels small and that there isn’t a way people take her seriously if she isn’t outwardly assertive. I’ve been through the same thing and I’ve responded to my life the same way she does. I see her, and I feel seen.
I’ve healed, and am continually working towards a better, truer me. I am working on not letting my demeanour and liking towards cute things change regardless of what people think. It still bothers me being viewed as small and helpless, but I’m working on not letting that define me cause I’ve survived so long and liking cute and “childish” things isn’t a bad thing.
it’s such a raw character of what abuse does to kids. Survivors have unique ways to cope and become people who are just continuing to be the in state of “surviving” instead of living. we can get better! And be happier :). Although I still struggle and live in the same situation that hurts me, I’m doing all the work required to be the person I want to be. Natsuki helped me realise what I went through and that I wasn’t just a asshole as a teenager but that I was really trying to be understood whilst being continually disregarded and disrespected.
i really enjoy natsuki's character because she speaks to me. i was abused by various parental figures in ways similar to natsuki and it left me struggling to make friends because i was scared they were going to judge me like they did, so tried to be tougher then i actually am and isolated myself a lot. i didn't grow up in a well off household either, and i still have struggles spending money even if i'm hungry or inconvenienced, i don't even like being gifted nice things anymore
to this day, i'm still isolated from the rest of my family, and i don't talk genuinely around my friends anymore, not just because it sometimes feels embarrassing, but also because i feel like i'll upset them by sharing interests with them. i'm convinced no one will like anything i do because of pressures from those figures, so i rarely show any of my talents and hobbies
i got really upset seeing natsuki getting called bratty and mean when to me it's always been a trauma response, because i've responded like she has before. hell, i still respond like that at times, and it made me feel like i couldn't get the help i needed because i'm too "abrasive". i'm still treated like that by my sister, despite her being the reason my mental health is derailing and going back to my "natsuki mindset"
natsuki isn't supposed to be a nice and easy-to-talk-to character, because that's the reality of the situation; abuse can morph into negative coping mechanisms, people can respond similarly in real life. her entire character is a cry for help, and unlike me, who's lucky enough to be able to go to therapy, natsuki can't. you can't fix any of the characters, and that applies very well to natsuki
i'm happy to see this video, it makes me feel more understood. i wish i wasn't around the ddlc hype in it's release days so i didn't have to see all those stuff said about her (and me by association). i'm glad people are starting to love her character, thanks for the video 👍
I don't understsnd why she gets so much hate. Natsuki was always my favorite. I think a lpt of people may just have a lack of understanding of people with anger issues, or who are initially anything other than ideally welcoming. But I have experience being that person. The angry person isn't angry because they want to be. It's because they simply feel very deeply, and have most likely had bad experiences that skew that deep well of feelings to an offensive by default. Anger becomes a pointy shield to keep prople away so that the wrong people don't hurt them again.
Natsuki actually isn't that hostile though, at least in the Act 1 version of the game. She's more guarded than anything, but the principle still applies I think. She's been bullied for her interests, so her best defense is a good offense as if she perceives shade toward her writing style, she counters by insisting that you just don't get it. And in the case of Yuri's judgement of her seemingly simplistic and cutesy poetry style, she's right. Yuri has an assumption of Natsuki, that her fluffy writing style has no substance. She judges Natsuki based on appearance, and that's exactly what she's defending herself against.
On another note too, speaking of defending against assumption based on appearance, I also have just had enough of people making a stink about petite or short female character (or even in some cases, real petite or just short women). They exist, and it's not somehow wrong. Yes the game states that they're all 18. Now even if you disagree, which is fair I guess, Natsuki would probably be 17, or 16 at youngest. That doesn't mean she looks like a child just because she's the smallest. And if she looks like that at 17 or 16, she's probably not going to lool much different in 2 to 5 years. Heck, I knew a girl around my age who was pretty much the same height. Didn't grow much at all from teen years to young adulthood. People need to chill.
Interesting that you mention discourse over her appearance too, considering Monika uses that to try and drive you away from her. First by inserting the notion that Natsuki is small because her dad starves her, then by implying that anyone who's into figures like Natsuki's is a creep.
I really like Natsuki and her relationship with the protag in Act 1. Even if I know if I met her irl she'd probably make me cry and I'd end up avoiding her 😅
And yes, the whole "Natsuki can't possibly be that old" discussion. I knew a person like that in high school. She now has a very mature looking face, but is still as tiny as ever. Just met her mother the other day, she has the same body type and is even shorter. Sometimes people are like that 😂
I forgit about that @@ElFreakinCid, you make a good point. And I think the game definitely depicts this and most of the things Monika does as bad, even if she herself is supposed to be a sympathetic character.
This in particular, is completely unfair to both the women in question, and anybody who is - or could've been - in a relationship with them. As long as everything else is on the up-and-up, simply being with a woman who is small, petite, or youthful is not inherently wrong, and they deserve the freedom to find love just like anybody else.
People seem to forget that small people exist, and that their height does not diminish their maturity. There was an older student at my high school who looked about eight years old. Short, tiny build, chubby face... I assume she had one of those conditions. I always think about her when people talk about this stuff.
She drove. The biggest pickup truck. I've ever seen. Did a double take every time I saw her climb into the driver's seat. Either she had a bit of a complex about her height... or the greatest sense of humor.

I would love for you to make a video about the side stories and how they go in depth about characters' relationships and definitely one about Natsuki and Yuri's friendship. They are super interesting when placed together. Also, I adore all of the side stories because of how absolutely cute they are and so genuinely real and raw when it comes to accurate emotions.

Ngl I think Natsuki does have easily one of the saddest scenes in the game, and it’s weirdly her scariest and most iconic, that being her neck snap scene.
Now at face value, it seems just something really creepy that Salvato put into the game for a scare, but I think if you look at it closer it becomes actually kinda depressing. She’s practically having a panic attack over everything going on. Her abusive father, Yuri pulling you away from her, Monika turning a blind eye, and just generally weird things going around probably caught up to her in a major way.
Her telling the player to not ruin things for you further adds onto her dislike of things not being right for her, and her unhappy conditions. In the dialogue too she also calls Yuri a sick freak, and while in act 2 that isn’t too far fetched, it shows that someone in her conditions, and panicking, can say things they may not mean. And the cherry on top is her repeating, practically begging the main character to play with her. Sure it may just seem like creepy dialogue, but it’s probably her way of wanting help, or comfort. She’s begging you to play with her, to comfort her, to make her feel safe again.
That’s why she literally and metaphorically snaps, as she couldn’t take it anymore as she cries bloody tears. She rushes after you, both as a sort of jumpscare but also in a last ditch effort for safety. She wants to be safe with you, as you are practically the last bastion of hope for the club, the club that gives her peace in a way. A place where her abusive father doesn’t beat her and her friends doesn’t disrespect her. That is also why I think she smiles, as she sees you as a hopeful light of protection. But still, it’s a forced smile, because deep down she knows this will only result in nothing as Yuri continues to steal you for herself. But still, she tries to get you, for security.
Her panic attack is honestly really sad. The more I think on the scene the more I feel bad for Natsuki. She really doesn’t deserve all the crap she gets in the game’s world :(

I've always preferred Natsuki's writing style to the rest of the club's. Something about simple wording being used to tackle some more complex ideas often leads to it being more impacting to me. I've always really liked eagles can fly because of how it breaks its own formula to accent the point, all with a single line. Maybe it's because my waffling ass couldn't condense my own writing if I had a gun to my head.

for a long time, i was always very open about myself and always cheerful and bubbly and what have you. sayori was my biggest vibe... until things happened in my friend group. i would get teased and judged endlessly about certain things i liked and i felt like i was punished for just being honest. the only way i felt i'd get around without getting hurt is by... well, being abrasive and hiding myself and my interests from everyone. so i became a natsuki. this video made me tear up because of how much natsuki's words at 5:16 mean to me now. i didn't think much of them during my first playthrough, but now that i'm in her shoes... i feel that. dan salvato just poured the most relatable traits into his characters and i love him and his team for that lol

As someone who had dealt with two emotionally neglectful parents as well as friend groups that have put me down for my interests, a LOT of the natsuki side story plots and quotes hit really close to home honestly. I’m genuinely at a bit of a lack of words for how well a fictional anime girl managed to accurately portray the after affects and severe psychological damage of childhood abuse, hell, continual abuse. It’s a little heartbreaking honestly

finally i find SOMEONE who understands natsuki! shes my favorite because shes a much deeper character than most people assume her to be, and honestly i relate a lot to her. for example, ive loved sonic the hedgehog ever since i was a little kid. as a kid, i was mocked by classmates just for liking videogames. i was the only kid who consistently played on her ds between classes. even the boys who played videogames too didnt take me seriously. and i felt mocked by the internet whenever anyone made fun of sonic too. im now an adult and im happy to stay a sonic fan, but man, natsukis reaction to her friends mocking her hits so close to home...

Since DDLC+, I've grown so much more fond of Natsuki, and feel a lot of kinship with her. Sure, I'm lucky enough to have not had to deal with a home life similar to hers, but everything she puts up with from her friends outside the club and how that makes her feel and act, it's so reminiscent of my own experience with friends in high school. This fellow short anime and manga fan just wants to give the girl a big hug and tell her it's gonna be okay.
Don't forget the comment in the first act of the main game where natsuki comments that she is late for dinner and needs to eat as much as possible or else she won't get any food
so glad you understand her character. she’s my favorite and it’s always bothered me how no one gets it, saying she’s superficial and annoying. but there’s so much more of her personality and backstory for those willing to see it

I always likes Natsuki. So I remember when Monika broke her, I was so mad at Monika. Months later, I can somewhat understand Monika suffering too now. But back then, I was so mad with what Monika did to her. Natsuki just wanted to save Yuri.
Meanwhile i don't usually get as upset as Natsuki, even SHE is a character in the game that i can understand. But, seriously? People hate her over her mean personality? I thought she was popular by fans? And she's no bully at all, she's just... Insecure...
I do also have the feeling like her when i have my own hobbies and i get upset when somebody judges what i like. And it feels like people say mean stuff behind my back, so i usually demand honesty and i used to be kind, but, just like Natsuki, i got more insecure and try to make sure that others are honest to me. Her dad's an absolutely... How do i put it?... Demon?... So are her fake friends, the friends in the literature club are WAY better friends then those two. I also don't like hugs as much as i used to, and have gotten easily annoyed at times. Yet, i remain kind when i need to, however. Oh, and yes. I also value my stuff and tries to hide them somewhere safe.
So it turns out that me and Natsuki are not so different either after all.

I played this game and then later traded it in with a stack of others without playing through all the side stories, and after seeing all three of your analysis videos I wish I played through them.
I never took the characters as commentary of very real human problems outside of Saori, so seeing this through your lens is eye opening. Thank you for breathing new life into these games
Natsuki is my favorite because I've been where she's been and experienced what she has. She is a very real character and her experiences with struggling to express her feelings and her parental abuse is something I can relate to which is why shes my favourite. What hits particularly hard is her artwork and how she isn't taken seriously because a certain style is so true on so many levels. Shes far and away my favourite because she is the most relatable to me... which may say something about me but lets not talk about that.
I like how with the other girls, they’re sweet on the outside by mean on the inside, while Natsuki’s mean on the outside but sweet on the inside.

I know this video was uploaded a year ago, but I’m so happy to see so many people who like Natsuki too! I was pretty young when this game came out and when it became popular. But I wanted to play it for myself, and I saved myself from any biased opinions on characters. I had a horrible home situation and I immediately resonated with Natsuki’s character. I saw myself, similar reactions and feelings in Natsuki. I knew how she felt, and this sounds kind of lame because she’s a literal video game character but I can’t help it. Someone, a real person, still thought about her story, her actions, and built her character. Violent tendencies, overreactions, defensive behavior, are all things I’ve experienced and felt a lot of times. Seeing so many people hate her character made me rethink about how I act as a person and of course I’ve changed for the better but at the same time this video really made the younger me feel better about herself.

@@gigikk1001 NOOO ITS NOT! and i am glad to read this, lately ive been delving back into ddlc recently and i went from disliking Natsuki when i was younger to totally loving her atp i think she may be my favorite character tied with Sayori. Natsuki is a well constructed and complex character that is all seen to be this “tsundere” everyone calls her meanwhile in reality people are like this too, rude, speaking their intrusive thoughts aloud, never sugarcoating truths, due to the mental diminishing effect of what goes on within those walls in their everyday lives because at the end of the day we learn the harsh behavior from others and build a barrier to protect ourselves from the abusive recognition.

I'm gonna be honest, when I first played DDLC I didn’t like Natsuki as much but then when I went through her past with her dad, especially she became my one of my favorites 🩷
sayori is my favorite due to her genuine and caring personality, as well as her relatability for me, but natsuki’s been a very very close second since i first set eyes on DDLC back in 2017.
I see myself in her, being constantly judged for my interests by others, and my strict parents that make me feel like i constantly have to hide what i enjoy just to feel respected by them. i feel the need to always be on the defense and put up a loud, aggressive front whenever i feel disrespected, and it takes a lot for me to open up to people and express myself due to always feeling judged.
just like natsuki, I love cute things and i have an artstyle that’s considered “cute”, but i feel like the suffering and the raw feelings i try to depict in the art i make gets overshadowed by the “cuteness”, with people focusing on that instead. I really do feel for her when she says she doesn’t like being called cute, it’s actually pretty condescending in a way, limiting her to a style that’s almost never taken seriously even when she has so much more to her.
there’s so much depth to her that gets overlooked, and i wish people could see past her abrasive surface and discover how strong, considerate, and humble she actually is. i strive to be as resilient as her one day, she’s been through so much yet she’s still standing and she’s arguably the most stable mentally of all the other characters even with her circumstances. for that, she will always be one of my favorite fictional characters of all time, up there with sayori for me :)
I remember first playing ddlc.
I had already seen some if not most scares but i still eanted to try it. Because it looked like an amazong experiance. (For the record most scares still got me lmao).
Durring the first act i already chose natsuki. She seemed like the best one to me. And durring the second act i got the basic play with me stuff and the dad talk stuff. But i also got the special poem from her.
And also because she was basically the most normal one durring act 2. I just grew attached to her character. She has been my favourite character from ddlc since then.
I would love to see that Yuri and Natsuki cross analysis! Their dynamic is one of my favorite parts of their characters!
It’s almost ironic because even by the players, parallel to her own world, she seems to be the most disregarded of the four and the most “stereotyped” but you show how deep and genuine her character really is. She deserved more appreciation.

I'm watching these all out of order, but I had mentioned in the Yuri analysis video that Yuri and Sayori were my two favorite girls... But it's really just too hard to choose. And I don't think I'll ever have a true "favorite". Yuri & Sayori, both have things I relate with, therefore making them better to my liking. I guess I draw towards people/characters that have similar backstories... Which makes sense I suppose.

Natsuki is my favorite in ddlc I didn't expect to have a lot in common with her. For me it's not my friends and family but rather step family and just random people in school I barely know commenting on my style and interests
When I first got to DDLC I used to hate Natsuki (always and even now love Yuri), but when I revisited the entire thing in 2022 (I watched the Game Grumps play through, then bought the game), and my view on her changed, I like her a lot now, she’s only third (behind Yuri and Sayori) but I sympathize with her now, the father’s abuse felt disconnected, but it makes sense, why would she mention it, but what really hooked me was her friend’s story, not because of what I went through, but what I have heard what my sister has gone through with some of her “friends”, and that connected with me better than the first time I viewed it, Yuri is my ego’s worst case scenario, Sayori is my younger side’s cleansed darkness, and Natsuki is my most feared
just binged watched yourrage’s gameplay and he didn’t really have any interactions with natsuki so i appreciate the context of her character here
The interesting thing is that a lot of people who played DDLC thought of Natsuki almost the same way as people around her in the game do. Like "haha, cute short tsundere girl go brrrrrrrrrr", while in reality she's really deep character. If there was an anime where Natsuki was the protagonist, there wouldn't be ANY boring episodes at all.
Not only is she relatable, but her personality leads to "authentic" responses in any circumstances.
I can't even envision Sayori being angry at the player, or Yuri in a silly situation, but Natsuki is just material for anything and everything you could come up with, being the most expressive of the girls in my opinion.
Heck, she even managed to make me grow into liking color pink!

Natsuki is by far the one I understood the least on a first playthrough. Probably because her problems are the ones I can relate to the least.
I was never abused by my parents, and my friends have been fine when I had them.
Natsuki is the only one who had to spell things out to me.
However, once I understood what was going on in her life, I grew to love her just as the rest of the girls.
That being said, I could sympathize with her struggles of being the only one in the room with her interests, to the point where I could not share my likes with others growing up.
Things are different now, which I am eternally grateful for.
I always loved Natsuki. When I meet people they later on tend to say I seemed so mean at first and I never understood why, I just like keeping my distance until I know someone. It’s only as of the past year I came to recognize my childhood sucked so this character always stuck with me as something I could look to and see myself.

5:53 nobody should have to change themselves for anyone, if they don't like you than they can fuck off. Everyone else including her father are very much in the wrong for not respecting her for who she is. If you feel like you need to change yourself for other people than than the people in question can just leave your life entirely and not be present in it.
One of the saddest parts of life that I find is that when you're feeling good, everyone loves you, but if you're sad for too long, people start to move away from you and that's very lonely.
I've always related to Natsuki most, i remember watching all my favorite youtubers play this game, and I've always felt like i had a connection with her, even though i was "too young" to comprehend the complexity of the game, but i just knew that her character wasn't only "it's not like i like you" and stereotypical tsundere, I've been a small kid all my life, and the creator got it spot on, People never take you seriously, even friends, when you're angry, it's "cute" whenever you want to geniuenly express yourself, you're just seen as childish or cute. it gets so tiring, and the hurt amplifies when you've been through hurtful childhood experiences. you try to find a safeplace, when something ruins that, it's like another part of your life is being shattered. You can't be taken seriously by anyone, other then there. it hurts so so much. it's so hard to show your feelings when they're constantly being overlooked, theres so much more i gotta say, but you explained it perfectly, DDLC has helped me so much, i know it sounds crazy but it has.

I might just be in tears. I've been a major DDLC fan since like 2018, and found it again during 2021 (it actually helped me through a lot of my own issues from the lockdown) but in every playthrough I watched, and every fan blog I saw at the time, Natsuki was always seen at face values and then tossed away, and it hurt SO MUCH as someone who related to her so deeply. I'm not nearly as strong as Natsuki is, even after being through a much much lesser degree of the same stuff, so she's a major inspiration to me on top of being highly relatable. Her poems are HANDS DOWN my absolute favorites in the game, contended exclusively by Bottles, from Sayori.
Anyways, im just extremely grateful that there's people out there who see and understand her as well as I do, and value her as a character despite her outward abrasiveness
Actually, after sometimes playing DDLC, when I was a high-schooler I really prefer Yuri over Natsuki because of her designs and timid personality. But now as an adult, I really want to give Natsuki a nice hug and say to her "I adore you as who you are. You don't have to be anyone else you don't want to be just to fit in this bullsheet society"
I still like Yuri though just everyone has their unique lovable side and I love the way they are, not just only the outside but also the inside as well.
Well, this game is really a masterpiece for my high-school era and I'm still missing the life back then. I wish everyday I could go back...
when i watched playthroughs of DDLC i really connected with natsuki, which was weird to me cuz i hated the regular tsundere archetypes. i think even as a kid i picked up on her depth because of how much i related to her, but looking back on it now she's even more deep than i realized, especially with the new content in doki doki plus! i gotta replay the game tbh
natsuki is my favorite doki girl and she will stay on her throne, after getting to her route (which was my first one), i loved her immediately
I honestly felt so bad for Natsuki during entire game :( And the fact that a lot of people dislikes her because of lack of reading comprehension is just as frustrating. Thank you for your analysis, I hope some people will finally see her from a different point of view

I dont have words to describe how amazing, wonderful and life-changing this video was to me. I am 100% sure that from The next months, and years, i will re-watch this several times, to remind me of how complex human beings can be. And also, to remind me that everybody suffers, even if i am not seeing it.
Natsuki has always been my favorite character, I never understood why (Or I forgot) but watching this video made me realize how similar we are and why I like her so much. Thank you for making this video
