The geometry of folding the wing is a beautiful thing. I wish the photography was closer in the moving part, so that we could see the movement mechanism

The TBM and The TBJ both served in a role as forest firefighting airtankers. They were sturdy, dependable and well suited for the task. Its good to see some are surviving today.

I'm in love with Pratt & Whitney R2800 engines - But Curtiss Wright R2600s are cool, also.
FUN FACT: The CW R1300 powering the North American T-28 Trojan was exactly one half of one of these engines (that also powered NA B-25 bombers)

It gives you a surprising view of just how thick the wings are on these planes. It must have taken some real power to get them into the air.

GM's Eastern Aircraft? I worked in the plant where some of those aircraft were built during WWII. There were pictures of the Avengers on the final check line. Then the planes were shuttled across the street to the airport. It's now called Mercer County Airport. The plant was closed in late-'98 and demolished in the early-2000s. It's becoming a mixed use housing and shopping district.

I'm guessing that in wartime, they wouldn't fold the wings with real ordnance still attached.

    • @dragonmeddler2152

You would be right about that. But, I'll bet it happened with some regularity. Thats why the Navy has bought a lot Grumman aircraft over the years. Grumman's planes are tough as tanks and can usually outlast years of torture meted out by well-meaning but impatient 19-23 year old sailors. Go Naval Air!

    • @AlphaTangoPhoto

Translated your comment. Yes, and in fact, I'd say that most American planes of the WWII Pacific theater were heavier (and to a certain extent) more sluggish than their nimble Japanese counterparts. American planes were like this because they were built to more rugged standards and made up for this in part by putting more powerful engines in them. Today I'm glad Japan and the U.S. are at peace with each other. And if this pandemic ever lets up, I can make my eighth visit to your wonderful country. (On my second trip, back in 1992, a small group of us U.S. Navy personnel were privileged to be given a guided tour on a Japanese destroyer based at Yokusuka.)
