bro he shooots too slow. because he can’t control cueball properly. You can see how he fast forward every shot. so yeah a good cue is very important. this guy not telling the whole truth that he uses a good snooker cloth too the one that is very fast cloth.
Liked that and I'm sure you could clear the colours with the halfbutts if you wanted to. When it comes to cheap cues I always feel one piece is better. Sometimes the cheaper joints can ruin the feel and even have an effect on solid contact. They always seem to be lightweight also.
I fins these tutorials very helpful for reminding even seasoned player's that the basics are as important as the all the fancy flash shots a good/better player makes. Calmness focus and consistency is the key to every aspect of this sport. Forgot to mention i use my grandfathers cue. The only modification i did was to drill and insert a steel bar into the butt. As i found it a bit light and unbalanced. It also helps me with power through the extra weight
yes, the sound of the strike was more hollow sounding and not "as solid", but the sound doesn't make the shot. Good observation. This video proves what I have been seeing and saying for a long time - the price of the cue has very little effect on how good you are going to play.
I'm getting a new cue this weekend, haven't bought one before. It will be nice to have something I'm used to rather than having a different one each week.
Hi..you are a lovely coach...i have a question...my backswing is perfectly straight but when i decide to deliver the cue then my wrist is slightly move...em doing practice on bulk line but this is not working how could i correct it...
I can think of a few reasons and you need to test which one or more contribute to your situation. 1) any of the bridge hand, shoulder, elbow, one side or two sides, or your eyes, head, moved when the cue is delivered. 2) Your vision is not properly aligned with the line of aim, though you think it is. 3) your body and limbs are not in a proper form that allows you to cue straight. 4) Vision and form are not aligned when slight adjustments are made after bending down for the shot.
@@snooker9773 thanks...ok i wanna tell you something or asking...my cue action is short..em working on proper cue action....i think in my short cue action the way i play snooker is working but when i decide to improve my game and my cue action my muscle grooving is stopped i think thats why my wrist is moving..my english is not very good..😅
Hey sir thank you..i believe that it ia not all about the cue but the training you put,and to be fully commited to the snooker. It is very good to collect more information abt cue and the game of pool table it self..
Please could you also comment on ‘feel’ and feedback from this cue. Many say you need a one piece cue rather than jointed; and if jointed a 3/4 is better than 1/2. You didn’t seem to feel any negative points on the playability with the challenge successes!
I’m just getting into the sport and absolutely love the channel!! I feel as though I have my own personal coach in my pocket all the time! Kudos for creating such great content. I do have a request/idea for a future video, i watched the side spin video of yours and was really helpful, I would really love to watch an extended version of that which could explain how the cue balls behaves with side spin when it hits the cushion, especially when you are playing a 2/3 cushion shot.
Great video matey, I agree 100% it does not matter how expensive the cue is, it's up to the individual player and how he or she can use their tools! Keep these videos coming, cheers!
Hey Steve, I had a few cues in my snooker life and sometimes, the cheap cues did me the power of good. Had my first 50 years ago with a cheap Argos cue. Fun times. Loved the video, very informative and intuitive.
My 30 year old cheap cue sat in the cupboard for 20 years between my snooker days & my now English 8-ball fun. It's a little warped, but with a new tip & knowing which way to hold the cue, it's doing all right. A bad tradesman blames his tools.
Great video, I was thinking of upgrading my cue, perhaps all I need is a better tip as I haven't changed it since I brought it. Then I've got not excuses really as you have proven.
Just bought a new cue myself today. Haven't played for a long time, but am starting to get back into it. Love watching your videos. Maybe one day I'll consider coming to you for some coaching. God only knows i need it!
The cue plays a big part to feel comfortable while playing but at the end of the day, it's all up to the stance, pre-shot routine and delivery of the cue I surely believe. Having said that, Steve you have all the necessary qualities and more that even with a broomstick you can easily make a Ton!! Well done for another informative session :) ...keep'em coming!!
Wonderful session. Proved a lot of things. One which is that a player can use any cue that they feel comfortable with and not necessarily be an expensive one.
There should be more coaches like you Steve. The cue itself is overlooked especially the value of the cue. Many players myself included, when reached a higher level in all areas, break building, long potting and safety thought if I get a stiffer shaft with a nice grain then it would give me that edge with increased cue power. And even though it does help with some cue power, no one else would be able to play with it properly other than me since I’m using my own technique and cue action along with timing the shot well with very little effort. So you’re very right the technique and the way you time the ball as opposed to hitting at the ball is true, very important and also when you’re in amongst the balls you don’t need that much cue power it’s mainly about the player concentrating, cueing in a straight line and keeping close control of the white. I once purchased a woods cue from China while my original cue was undergoing repairs and on the first day it got delivered I could play every shot and made a 63 managed to split the pack nicely. Wasn’t the best for smoothness but it did the job intended in order to play properly 👍🏻 Very informative video dispensing from the myth you need an expensive cue to improve your game.
i'm looking for a new cue as mine is bent. i've taped it to a long spirit level to try and straighten it. it's a great video to show you don't need to spend a fortune. i'm looking at something simple without the fancy splicing with the exotic timbers as this is what you end up paying for. eye candy yes, but it ain't gunno improve my game.
my cue cost me £45 from my local Snooker centre and came with a free case, I love it. I made a 61 break the same day i got it, and yesterday i got a 93 in the line up exercise. My highest ever, was so chuffed.
Finally someone does a video about cheap cues cause lord knows I can’t afford a pro one. Just shows it’s all about prep and technique. Nice job Barton Snooker very helpful

Loved this video -very encouraging for a beginning snooker player. I happened to have bought a snooker cue very much like the one you demo in this vid. I happen to have a few decent tips laying about and would like to replace the factory installed tip just as you did. Could you make a video demonstrating your process of replacing a tip on your snooker cue? I a bit hesitant to try doing it myself - fearful I might damage the metal ferel. I enjoy watching your videos all the from the other side of the world in Kenya. Having only started playing snooker recently, after 8 years of playing 8 ball pool.I find them very helpful and informative. Keep it up.
Yes sir you are absolutely right that it's not important to have an expensive cue to play well but it's more important to have a brilliant coach to teach us that what is the best way to play well. But unfortunately I can't afford a brilliant coach for one to one coaching session but I always learn from you so I am really thank full to you to teach me step by step. Thank you so much
The most important part of the cue is the tip. Can you make a vid on what tip-types / shapes etc there are and what their focus is, please? ... and how much the chalk distribution on the tip plays a role?
Love this video Steve - just proves that technique is king. Steve Prest once told me that as long as the cue is straight and doesn't have a lot of flex in it, you're good to go.
Good advice. I was researching cues, and wasn't sure if it was worth jumping in boots and all and buying something expensive or not. Now I know. Thanks
I bought my cue 2nd hand in a brick-a-brac shop for £5. It's basically a "house" cue you'll see on a rack. I use a 9mm elkmaster tip. Probably worth about the fiver I paid for it. I knock in decent breaks ranging from 40s up to 60s and 70s most of the time I play. Not every frame but most of the time I play. A decent cue helps but a great technique with an average cue will get you through. All depends how serious you want to play really.
A good snooker player can lift any cue, adapt, and be pretty damn good! I have been playing since I was 4 years old, standing on a bucket to reach the table. having a 52 break at age 13 with a cue my dad bought me in an auction for £5. I played local leagues, and showed I was better than most. Then I owned a Lewis & Wilson cue, which cost £190 for, which I made a 92 break at age 28. After this I owned a John Paris cue, 22 Onces in weight, which I paid £425 for, but my highest break since has been only 88! (still own it, now 35 years old!) I guess, it doesn't matter HOW much you pay for a cue, if it feels right, and you have the skill, anything is fine! I would consider using the yard brush!!! lol However, BartonSnooker is just first class! How he isn't on TV Just shows how difficult it is to make the stage! But what a wonderful thing he is doing, helping us all with his skills!! :)
@@BartonSnooker Thank you, for your great videos and tips! you are really an inspiration to us all! (a video tip on how to perfect the "on purpose" miscue, when snookering an opponent would be cool!) this is one of the most difficult shots I learnt which might be useful to your audience, and me also! lol)
Hi, I agree that the cue action and technique are way more important and that a good player can make a century with a rolling pin but I believe that the good cue can also make a difference. Currently I play with 40£ cue but recently had the opportunity to play a little bit with a Parris cue and I was surprised from myself. I was able to do things I can't do with my cue. I had much better control over the cue ball and much more cue power. I felt like it gave me super powers and couldn't believe that this piece of wood can make such a big difference in my game. What is more, the Parris cue was with a cheap 2 euro tip, nothing fancy on it. I really can't explain why I was playing way better with this cue which I hold for first time. I was considering of buying one but after this video I think I will give a chance to the cheap cue and work on my technique 😁
Steve, what you didn't mention here is that the length of the cue seems important, the cue length should depends on your body height and reach just below your shoulder right?
You have given me motivation .. Bcoz I too play in somewhat a cheap cue... your videos give me perfection in my every single game I play.. I always wait for your new videos..
Thank you for boosting the moral, especially for players who use the cue provided by the club's. After playing for a certain period of time we used to have doubt back of our mind regarding the cue efficiency, that mental block is taken out. Cheers!
Hello, I’ve always enjoyed your videos, learned a lot about the basic cueing technique, really helped my game! Really enjoyed this video, shows you don’t need an expensive cue to play well! My dad just bought himself a parris cue so can’t Wait to beat him with my 15 year old £20 cue!
I'm an electric wheelchair-bound club player and I play lots of local tournaments (twice doubles semi finalist), you make it look so beautiful the way you cue the ball
Great pot percentage. Don't blame the tools, blame one self for errors. The cue performed great. For all newbies to the sport, start simple and change your equipment with time.
Hello from Hong Kong. Great technique, I watched a lot your video and made some improvements .Thanks a lot. Would you please show us how’s your long screw shot when you are using you own handmade cue, is there any different when you using that cue? again, thanks🙏🏼
I have watched several of your videos and I am improving little by little, every time I play I make outstanding long shots and banks and yet miss easy shots.
Very good video, started playing snooker half a year ago, still don't have my own cue, but I think that a good technique is far more important, than an expensive cue, as the video clearly shows.
Do you play in any league or amateur tournaments? It would be good to watch a video of you playing a competitive frame/match! My grandad played for years with a cheap 2-piece cue. I inherited it from him when he passed away a few years ago, but I've only used it once because the tip isn't great and I'm not sure how to replace it without damaging it. A new cue (even a cheap one) would be nice, but I don't live in the UK and I expect you don't want to pay to ship it abroad? (I image the shipping would be more than the cue itself xD)
Its a really nice motive to amature players who plays in local clubs with different cues to improve their game. Its just the solid cue action which matters💪
You could give this man a branch and he would still pot more than me 😭
A mate of mine once beat me at english pool using exactly that - a branch... he was even chalking it to rub it in a little bit more :D
... and in my next video I‘ll use a cane 🤣 I love it. You’re cool.

Now I know. Thanks
What tip size would u recommend. I m playing with a 10mm. Some people I see play with thinner size tips.
10 mm is perfect any smaller may crop up miss cues unless you are as good as Shaun Murphy 9mm.
I’m in Italy. Can’t play snooker here. But I love it so much I’m following your lessons. Thanks a lot for your passion.
When playing a shot. What’s the last ball you look at. The cue ball or the object ball?? Thanks Ben
Your Lessons are transparent and very informative,,,helped me up my game. Thanks alot
Great video. Really shows how important fundamentals are compared to equipment. Thanks.
(still own it, now 35 years old!)
I guess, it doesn't matter HOW much you pay for a cue, if it feels right, and you have the skill, anything is fine! I would consider using the yard brush!!! lol
However, BartonSnooker is just first class! How he isn't on TV Just shows how difficult it is to make the stage! But what a wonderful thing he is doing, helping us all with his skills!! :)
You sound like an absolutely fantastic player.
Thanks very much for all the positive comments and following the videos! Much appreciated 🙂
Hi , you answered all my questions and then some.
I like the feel and look of maple. What weight, length and tip size would you recommend.
What constitute to cue power?
And I really need a tip on the grip on cue shots. How the opening of your hand on every every back swing
Superb content very informative as always helped my game no end by taking your knowledge onto the practice table.
This cue makes a funny pinging sound on contact. I’ve noticed that with cues before. Does anybody know what causes that?
Steve, what you didn't mention here is that the length of the cue seems important, the cue length should depends on your body height and reach just below your shoulder right?
What is the link to this cue? I live in America and would like something similar to this.
What you recommend that if i want a cue so where from i purchase it ? Sorry if my english is wrong😂 am not english speaker
Thank you for your info specially for beginers such as my self . Cue does not matter if you have the technie
You have given me motivation ..
Bcoz I too play in somewhat a cheap cue... your videos give me perfection in my every single game I play.. I always wait for your new videos..
What weight and length of que is good .
Excellent video, a great way to prove technique is all. Steve Barton coaching comes strongly recommended 👍🏻
You deserve every success...
Cheers! I hope you're well and still enjoying your snooker 👍🙂
With your help, the 2-3 ball breaks have gone to 5,6,7 ball breaks more regularly! Still work in progress- the target 50 is now a possibility!!
Liked and subscribed. Great video. Proves is about the person holding the cue rather than the cue itself
Thank you for boosting the moral, especially for players who use the cue provided by the club's. After playing for a certain period of time we used to have doubt back of our mind regarding the cue efficiency, that mental block is taken out. Cheers!
Very good teaching vedios is here in your youtube channel thank u barton for making me good player with ur technics♥
Great video. Would love the cue. What are the differences regarding the weight of the cues. ?
Great vid.shows how we all are not up to scratch when playing, money doesn't buy pots.well done.
Nice video, this is what I looking for. I'm waiting for more :)
