    I eventually went the anamorphic route, it has it's own flaws which you might like or not, is a little quirky to use and compose, without a monitor but you get used to it. For posting them on instagram I just make a quick triptych on photoshop.

    Hi Chris, creator of the 65x24 app here - thanks for the shout out!

      There are a few apps that already do this.

    • @heliographe.studio
      @heliographe.studio 2 місяці тому +1

      @@vermontmike9800 there are a few pro camera apps that have 65:24 as an aspect ratio setting. The issue I found with all of them is that either they squeeze the viewfinder into a space meant for 4:3, which makes it too small; or they have to fit the panoramic viewfinder within their UI built around a 4:3 aspect ratio, which means it gets cluttered with controls.
      I wanted a shooting experience with as large of a 65:24 viewfinder as possible, completely uncluttered from controls (because when you're shooting panoramic compositions, you really want to pay attention to the edges of your frame). This is what lead me to create an app dedicated to 65:24 capture, the first of its kind as far as I can tell.

    This is one of my favorite things about moving from the a7IV to the a7cII. For the crops, I find it’s much faster to do it in LR on my Mac, just crop one and apply all. It’s done in a few seconds. Everything gets washed through the Mac for storage so for me it’s more efficient to just do it all in one place. Cheers. 🍻

      * Select the Crop tool
      * Click on “Original” or whatever is next to the padlock icon for you
      * Choose “Enter Custom” from the drop down menu
      * Enter the values of 2.35 and 1 in the pop up window.
      Boom. 2.35:1 crop in Lightroom. And it saves the custom ratios you create for future easy use.

    In Lightroom (classic) you can create a custom 2.35:1 crop in the Crop & Straighten tool that will be saved automatically as a custom crop option. If you just type in the ratio for the custom crop, it will be centered in the frame - this is exactly where the Sony markers are too, so no need to refer back to the camera image to see where the crop is, it will always match. After you crop one image, you can select all your other images and Sync just the crop. Batch done.

    Nice video. You may have said this without me noticing, but the XPAN 65:24 crop is about 2.7:1, which is different from the Sony crop you mentioned of 2.35:1.

    Hi @ChrisBrockhurst!
    I just wanted to say thank you so much for shedding more light on this. Your initial video with the A7CII brought me down the rabbit hole for X-Pan previewing as well. As an A7IV user I get a little frustrated with not being able to have such a useful previewing tool that can so easily be added with a software update. Sony's reluctance to push this to multiple camera models is a point of improvement for sure.
    This video is so comprehensive and incredibly valuable. It has been difficult to find UA-cam videos showing the full range of camera systems/phone apps that can display such a wonderful aspect ratio. If more camera's had both 2:35.1 and 65:24 aspect ratios this would be wonderful.
    Side Note: Your new setup and lighting looks fantastic! Beautiful interplay with the light and shadow. That sunset/amber lighting looks great :)

    I started messing around with the markers with the a7cii because of seeing the video that you showed you could do! I wish my a7iv and a7siii could've done it, but oh well haha just finished filming a pov street photography style video doing this crop style. I've noticed you can crop the jpeg in the camera in the playback menu and then going to the edit section and hit crop and having applied with using those "sony film simulations" in camera and it'll crop the camera in camera saving it as a jpeg cropped! It's quite nice to do so!

    I shoot on Sony too, but also have a Fujifilm GFX 50r that offers the ‘xpan’ aspect ratio 65:24. On the 50r, the jpgs get save with the crop, but the RAWs are saved full frame. So if you chose to shoot JPG+RAW, then import into Capture One (I don’t know about Lightroom, but I assume it will be similar), then you have the JPG how you took the image (including any film sims applied), but you also have the Full RAW, so if you feel you need to slightly recompose, you have that flexibility.
    I really enjoy shooting with the 50R, it’s my favourite camera - unless I feel I need good AF.

    Does the XPan crop mode on the S5II work with the handheld high resolution mode? 24MP cropped to 65:24 gives a 13.6MP file. If it can shoot with high resolution mode, it should make a 54.4MP cropped file from the 96MP full size image.
