I've not tested it but there's not normally any overheating issues when shooting in 1080p.

@sethu madhaven Mine does overheat shooting 4k, but it's random. Sometimes it will sometimes it won't. I've also seen many other reviews where it doesn't overheat shooting 4k. It's a great camera so it's worth taking the risk. Just purchase it from a authorized and reputable retailer so you can send it back if you have any issues. All the best, Tim
This was so helpful kindly do the same for Sony A6600 it's already out
I don't own the a6600 unfortunately so can't test this. Official figures from Sony give the a6400 75 minutes of recording with the LCD screen and the a6600 gets 150 minutes. So you'll get double the battery life with the a6600 which has the larger NP-FZ100 battery.
Thanku
Hello sir, i'm fairly new to filmmaking and thought that this is a great camera for me, i was planning to buy the a6400, does overheating only occur when i use it non stop recording like yours or not? great video tho!
Basically yes, you'll need to use it for a while before it overheats. Although some people don't have any problems at all.
Did you ever check how much of a difference it makes if you're using an external recorder? I would assume you'd get significantly more runtime if it's not actually having to do video compression.
Sorry for the slow reply Rachel. No I've not checked with an external recorder but I'd also guess that the run time will be a lot longer.
I talked to Sony customer service and complained about a7 iii recording limit. They recommended to me to get a6400 which has no recording limit and overheating problem. I am planning to use 6400 as a camera B for interviews connecting it to electricity. Am i going to have overheating problem?
How long should the battery last if you just have it on and not recording? Mine dropped about 40% in 30 min for just fixing my settings. Also, have any of your batteries stopped working over a period of time? Thanks for the video.
Fiddling with settings does tend to kill batteries. I've not done any tests to see how long it will last but mine normally goes into standby and I'll often leave it in standby and the battery is barely touched even after a few hours. Non of my official Sony batteries or Rav Power batteries have stopped working and some are years old. I have some Ex Pro batteries which are pretty much useless after 2 years.
how about 1080p? how long ?
do you think it has the potential to go on forever recording 4k if connected to a power bank and using a 256GB memory card?
I don't think so, it will definitely overheat at some point as my overheating video shows. But I do plan to do another test soon using a power bank and dummy battery to see how long it will go for. All the best, Tim
Great test! I really want to get a battery grip for my A6400 but haven’t seen one available yet. Wondering if the one for the A6300 or A6500 would fit or if the ever so slight body differences would effect the fit
Thank you. I can let you know in a few days about battery grip because I’ve ordered the Meike battery grip for the a6300. Tim
You’re the man! Thank you!
@@KardosoMedia The Meike Grip (MK-A6300) fits just fine and appears to work, although I've not rested it very much just yet. However the shutter button on the grip does not work at all. There is a little cable you need to connect to the multi port on the a6400 for the shutter button to work, but it doesn't. I tested it on my a6300 and it works fine, so I'm guessing it's just not supported with the a6400. If you don't care about the shutter button then it should be fine but I'll need to test it for a little longer to see if both batteries work correctly. All the best, Tim
Thanks so much! I probably wouldn’t use the shutter button so not a big deal. Thanks for getting back to me. The grips match up nicely though? I was under the impression the A6400 grip was a bit bigger. Thanks again :)
@@KardosoMedia No worries! :) The grip matches the a6400 body nicely. I've not measured them but the a6300 and a6400 appear to have identically sized grips. The a6500 grip however is larger. Tim
Hi Tim, we’re thinking of getting this camera as a wide for weddings. Do you think the battery life would be much better in 1080p? Thanks!
Hi Hong. I've not tested 1080p battery life yet with the a6400. But my a6300 will get about 1h45m shooting 1080p so I would expect that to be slightly improved with the a6400. You could always use a USB power bank if you needed longer too. I will try to test the a6400 with 1080p in the next week or so. All the best, Tim
Thanks Tim!
I tested my battery life in 1080p 50fps and it recorded 2 hours 17 mins on a single battery with display off (I assigned the LCD disable to C2 button).
Gábor Antal thanks for that Gabor! Good tip to assign the lcd screen off to a custom button
Where is the video where it overheated? How long were you able to shoot before it overheated? Considering getting the a6100 and concerned about overheating while shooting beyond 1 hr of 4k video
ua-cam.com/video/fbjFwfuL4RE/v-deo.html - Overheating times varied from 40 mins to not overheating at all.
I just bought this a6400. The folks at Best Buy showed my the port where the AC adapter goes, (not the micro USB port for charging the battery) and told me I could plug in the AC Adapter for continuous power and they said the AC adapter was included. I just opened everything up and of course there is no AC Adapter. What AC Adapter works with the a6400?
I don't know what Best Buy showed you but if you want to use an AC adapter to run the a6400 then the official Sony one plugs into the battery port: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/712856-REG/Sony_ACPW20_AC_Adapter_for_NEX3_5.html (this is not included with the a6400). But you can also use a battery bank via the micro USB port to extend the run time.
I'm majorly a still photographer.
How many clicks should I get with one full charged battery if I take only 5 to 10 minutes of 4k video?
It's not really possible to give an accurate answer here Prosenjeet. It will basically depend on how quickly you take the shots because having the LCD / EVF on drains the battery. I've taken over 2000 shots on one battery shooting superbikes over a period of around 3 hours before the battery died on me. But then if I walked around all day with the camera turned on you would get a lot less. The battery in the a6400 is not the best. I would normally want a couple of spares in my pocket. The RAWPower batteries work very well. All the best, Tim
@@AlphaShooters Hi,
Appreciate your quick reply. I will be useing the camera from 10 AM to 5 PM in a day. So now with a full charged battery if I shoot intermittent 2 or 3 videos of 3 minutes each. Approximately how many images will I be able to click in that time period.(10 AM to 5 PM)? Do you think I will require a second backup battery?
Sorry for bothering you but I am stuck in buying Sony alpha A6400 or Fujifilm XT30
so if i understand correctly i can setup my A6400 and record until the battery runs out. so if i use a powerbank batttery i could record for hours until the memory card runs full ?
Basically that's correct Rob.
@@AlphaShooters so if i can record straight to my pc i can record for 8 hours straight. that is interesting. so an A6400 and a desk mounted camera i can use as a high end webcam and record my desk work and create video.s . am i correct ?
@@RobJorg Yes although it's not something I've tried myself. You would need to have some form of HDMI recorder device on your PC though if you don't record to the memory card in the camera.
@@AlphaShooters i have an elgato card that captures HDMI. should work then,.
How is the battery life with [Sunny Weather Mode]?
Surprisingly Sunny Weather Mode only reduces the battery life by an additional 3-4 minutes. All the best, Tim
how long it last for shooting image only
It will depend on how often the LCD is on and how many shots you are taking. I'd say 3-4 hours tops if it's not too cold. All the best, Tim
will recording at 1080p get more time battery
Yes. You'll get just over 2 hours from a single battery when shooting at 1080p.
Will the camera still record if it just stays plugged in
You mean plugged into a mains supply?
4k shooting - 1 hour 20 min... 12 degree celcius..
new battery used for test?
Yes.
How to get the battery percentage to show up? Mine doesn't show up
Sorry for the slow reply Roshin. Did you figure this out? Normally just pressing the DISP button and cycling through the displays will do it. Tim
Do you recommend a6400 in 2021
If you are looking for a Sony APS-C camera then definitely yes. I still have mine.
How many batteries shud i buy this camera omg! 😱 i dont have idea ..ughhh
Depends how long you are shooting? Video/Stills? If I'm going out for the day I'll normally take 3/4 batteries to be safe. I can recommend the RavPower batteries. Tim
Alpha Shooters thanks i will buy it surely! Thank you bc im only worried when u travel vlog.
Does it work with AC power ?
It does but you need to use a dummy battery.
New A6600 out today. For streaming and vlogging...Should I get the new 6600 or stay with the 6400? I think I would need AC power for conferences no matter an extended battery life.
I would use tripod for conference streamin and a gimbal for vlogging, so do I need IBIS ?
Hi Peter. Sounds like you don’t really need IBIS and if you plug in a USB power bank or AC then you won’t really need the longer battery life either. That’s $500 saved to spend on glass. Tim
@@AlphaShooters I will go for the 6400. Even though my shop just raised the price $100 when the 6600 was official :(
@@phcphcphc Really? That sucks! That's not happened here in the UK that I've noticed so far.
@@AlphaShooters What is the best internet shop for cameras in the UK ?
@@phcphcphc I typically order from Park Cameras, Wex Photo or Amazon.
What about 1080p?
You'll get just over 2 hours from a single battery when shooting 1080p.
