Same here. I absorb the lesson a few times before getting started. This is the only guy who ever got me sounding jazzy with only two crucial videos that i worked on for weeks. 2 vids upped my game. This guy is the Best on youtube
been playin forever but never really figured out free stylin blues..... this was a very nice lesson. Learned how to think of the bb box in relation to other scales. I knew they were there but I needed this lesson to get it in my fingers. Really good lesson..... thanks
You are the freakin man!! I’ve been “playing (again)” for a few short years. Self taught… I’ve been watching a lot of different people on UA-cam for lessons to try and improve my game and have learned a lot (so to speak). Tonight, I found you and this one lesson is more than I’ve ever learned from anyone else on UA-cam or in practice myself. Thanks brother!
I've been playing guitar for many years now but done little theory. I've trawled numerous youtube channels getting frustrated trying to get this in my head but this one lesson's opened my eyes more than the rest put together! One more well deserved subscription.
Hey Philip, so glad this lesson has been helpful for you. My daughter just turned two last week and fatherhood has been a challenge, but truly an amazing experience. Thanks for being to the first to send me a super thanks, that means a lot! -Rob
My wife plays keyboards and she likes playing in the key of C, never dawned on me that the 1-4-5 is sitting right there inside this box so easy to navigate through. ( obviously I’m not playing too long ), thanks again so much Rob, your lessons are just fantastic 🤙
Thanks, man! I've been watching BB Box breakdowns, and they're all "good," but this is GREAT- and the 1st that actually helped me to understand how to identify and follow the chord changes, "see" and expand the scales that work, and why. I blown away. I'm 64 and have been struggling with teaching this old dog new tricks...or in this case, new licks. Liked and subbed!
I have to say this is a clever and comprehensive lesson. I applaud the way you start with a relatively simple concept like the BB Box and @#$%^ whap, before you know it you are rolling right into using the full major scale mixing major and minor pentatonic, CAGED , Triads and probaly more. Wow, it has taken years to basically understand what you just laid down here in 20 minutes. Nicely done!
Many thanks a very clear explanation ,I can now understand. Great material, you explain well , i can now put. my other lessons together, should of found you sooner. You are a good teacher,God bless you.
I concur with our Scottish buddy Antony Williams below (my wife is Scottish so I'd better!) and this one really does not waste an ounce of useless material!! This is most definitely a super quality condensed vital lesson on soloing and following the chords that most of us would be smart to tackle in bits and pieces and then repeat.......like shampooing!! Great job, Rob!! Jim C.
Fantastic video. Perfect for where I am. That is trying to learn how to solo over chord shapes using triads and scales to indicate the harmony. A month ago it would have been overwhelming. Based on that I have a small suggestion. * While I can see in retrospect that the prerequisites are in the text summary, I had to work to understand them. It would have been helpful to have them listed in a bullet point list. * For this lesson perhaps something like the following... • I, IV, V progression in C (8th fret) • triads - D shape, root on B string • triads - F shape, root on E string • scales - major, major & minor pentatonic * I'm not positive the above is completely correct, because I need to work on the lesson with my guitar. I "know" the necessary prerequisites, but I still need to think about them. * Great lesson. It integrates a number of concepts I've been working on using something I always wanted to learn. Thanks so much.
Absolutely, especially in his younger days, he was very adventurous and experimented with many influences including Django Reinhardt. Later, he definitely simplified his approach, but was still brilliant.
Thanks Rob, a year later but you've just opened a huge door for me. Had to flip my brain to work between the fret schematic and your guitar to figure which way is up - but hey that's just me!🤣
Question: I’m at an early stage learning this stuff. When you say F major pentatonic scale at 10:24, and you show the shape, I thought if you use that shape it would be the F minor pentatonic or the G major pentatonic. The minor starts on the nut side of of the shape, and the major on the bridge side. Of course I could be wrong. Thanks for a great lesson. Seeing the chord shapes and scale shapes over the BB box was great. Thank you.
I love your videos mate!! I'm not sure if you've already done this one but if possible, could you please do a tutorial on the another brick in the wall part 2 solo PULSE version? It's one of Gilmour's best work imo. I would be extremely grateful. Keep up the great videos!!
I once asked Robben Ford what to play on the 4 chord .. but he stated that the minor pentatonic ( of the 4 chord ) should not be played on the 4 chord especially not when playing over a medium up tempo blues because the minor third does not sound right , a kinda sour to the ear . And i agree with that . It can , however be done on the 5 chord .
Robin definitely has a point, which is why I made sure to mention mixing in the major notes. You can play the minor 3 of the 4 chord, but it really needs to be in passing and followed up by the major 3 of that chord. On the other hand, you can absolutely play the minor pentatonic of the 1 chord over the 4 chord, because the minor 3 in that scale is the dominant 7 of the 4 chord.
Thank You for Your effort. It seems good. But what really backs me up from guitar tutorials is when teacher show scale/lick on tab, then plays through it, then plays through it calling each and every note, then play it again. Maybe some people love it, i don't know...
Practice your licks with this new backing track!

Please make (316 by van halen) tutorial please. Thank you😊😁
Wow man there is a lifetime of coarse study and music theory packed into this short lesson. I’m completely blown away. Thank you.
I don't often put my guitar down and just watch and listen, but I do for this fellow.
Same here. I absorb the lesson a few times before getting started. This is the only guy who ever got me sounding jazzy with only two crucial videos that i worked on for weeks. 2 vids upped my game. This guy is the Best on youtube
