    With the disastrous Union defeat at the Second Battle of Bull Run or Second Manassas, Union forces begin the slow withdrawal towards the outskirts of Washington. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia trails behind in close pursuit, trying to cut off the escape route of Pope's Army of Virginia. On September 1st, 1862, Union and Confederate Forces clash at Ox Hill, near Chantilly, a battle that will prove to be the final clash of the Northern Virginia Campaign.

    Chantilly, what a fight, one of the few known battles to be waged during a thunderstorm. That sure made things interesting for those who were there. If you like more content like this, make sure you subscribe to catch future uploads!

      The loss of this battlefield due to urban development is what caused the sudden urgency in battlefield preservation! Thank you for your painstaking research and bringing this battle to life!

    Most Civil War histories I have read gloss over this battle except to mention Phil Kearney's death. Glad to know the details of this battle. Sometimes the smaller battles have greater consequences then one would think. So I really appreciate your attention detail!

    3:13 "Upon learning the disposition of Pope's troops on the morning of the 31st, General Lee deems it too risky to attack on such unfavorable terms. Instead, he opts to move his army between Centreville and Washington, a move which will force Pope to abandon his advantageous position."
    Another lesson that probably should have been applied before ordering Pickett's attack at Gettysburg, by maneuvering between Meade and Washington if possible.

    I commented this on The Surety posted, but I grew up in Kearny New Jersey. He lived there and the town was named after him. He was a great General and could have possibly replaced McClellan. Who knows what would have happened if he was promoted

    • @Folgeantrag
      @Folgeantrag 3 місяці тому

      Phillip Kearny was one or the most courageous General in the AotP. Not only on the Battlefield but also by his character. After the Victory of Malvern Hill he protested against the further order from McClellan to retreat to the coast as treason and cowardice in which he had a fairly good point. It is therefore very unlikely that he would be promoted to Corps.Command as long as McClellan would have been in charge..His Death marks his virtues as a Commander like his vices because leading a single reginent in person on horseback into a charge was a risky endeavour

    Are you going to continue on through Antietam, or are you going to catch up with things out west that have been happening at this point? A Union force was all but destroyed at Richmond KY the same day as Second Bull Run, and Lexington is now being occupied. Or will you continue on with the east and catch up with the west later?
