With the road to Winchester clear after the Confederates' quick victory at the Battle of Front Royal on May 23rd, 1862, Stonewall Jackson's Valley forces are within a day's march of the city and its Union occupiers from Major General Nathaniel P. Banks' Department of the Shenandoah. Banks stations his forces south of Winchester along two strategically important hills dominating the battlefield: Camp Hill and Bowers Hill. His defensive position is well-placed, and Jackson will have to find a way to break through these two anchor points of the Union line if he is to defeat General Banks and re-capture Winchester for the Confederates. On May 25th, Jackson strikes in one of the most significant clashes of the 1862 Valley Campaign: the First Battle of Winchester.

It's sad that very little of this Battlefield remains. It is filled with houses and businesses. The 2nd Winchester Battlefield also has lost most of its ground. The 3rd Winchester Battlefield has the most acres preserved, but is surrounded by house and warehouses.
it is, i struggled to find a good map to work off of for the battle due to all of the lost ground
yeah i live right out side front royal i lived in old town Winchester for a few years i now live near the old train station in linden and there was a small skirmish on my hill side late in the war iv found alot of cool things a few confederate short swords a few cap lock pistols breast plates i first found a short swords whole bush hogging the field i seen a pice of metal sticking up and and pulled it out and i know right away what it was i ran back in the house and got my metal detector i was out there till i cover every inch of my land i then did research into linden area and my old home i found my house was built in 1858 and i have found phots of confederate soldiers sotting on the steps its a cool feeling to have the land that a pice of the civil war happened on i have everything is display cases in a room just for civil war ear stuff
@@WarhawkYT please contact me, I have superb accounts & maps of Third Winchester. Any way I can donate $ to see Third Winchester move up the list of battles to complete? :)
I love how you're going in chronological order
“Then Commissary Banks, with his motley foreign ranks,
Kicking up a great noise, fuss, and flurry,
Lost the whole of his supplies, and with tears in his eyes,
From the Stonewall ran away in a hurry”
"Next came the Wooly-Horse, with an overwhelming force,
To march down to Richmond by the Valley,
But he couldn't find the road, and his "onward movement" showed
His campaigning was a mere shilly-shally."
@@WarhawkYT "Instead of easy ground at Williamsburg he found a Longstreet indeed and nothing shorter. And it put him in the dumps that spades wasn't trumps, and the Hills he couldn't level as ordered"
I love how you do these lesser know battles, would love to see a battle in Louisiana
Great video warhawk team, just top notch animation, writing and narration
woah woah woah you are great
@@WarhawkYT you are the greatest
My hometown. I've dug so many Civil War relics from the battles and camps around here.
You know it's gonna be a good day when warhawk drops a new video.

Well paced and clear commentary with excellent graphics - thanks!

@@WarhawkYT i love watching history content on UA-cam, the us civil war is something i haven't seen much(obviously i have see Burns and other documentaries but nothing this detailed) so thank you for this
Every video feels better and better, good work guys!

I totally enjoy all of the episodes you post. Great animation and in depth information.

Damn that Union Soldier has a point tho.
SHEESH
maps and animation of action taken are very informative, more than ANY historical book can give :)
i live in linden va and there was actually alot that happened there because there was a train station there till the guy burnt it down that bought the land a few years ago i was lucky to go in it a few time before then and get some pictures of it the guy who burnt it down was from fair fax va and said he did not want to have anything on his land from the civil war i offered to just buy the building and enough land around it to keep it i offered him 350k he declined the offer so on the other side of the hill is where i live my house was built 1858 and i have found lots of things from the civil war on my land it was where the confederates camped a few times and also a small skirmish happened there i wish i could buy more land there so i could save it from being destroyed but doing my best to preserve it also alot of german pow after ww2 where sent to work the apple trees in linden alot of people dont know that too in my area my grandfather was a boy and seen the germans pows get hauled in on flatbed trucks chained together every morning and evening and always ran to the fence and watched them he said
Hooray🎉 Thomas Stonewall does it again!
I was named after Robert E. Lee. I camped on Antietam battlefield as a Boy Scout in 1960. There were thousands of minie ball surface finds on the fields we camped on which had been turned over from plowing by farmers after the war. I have also spent a lot of time in the Valley as an adult when travelling. R. E. Lee and Jackson are my greatest heroes. It broke my heart when their statues were removed from so many citles by WOKE politicians. History should not be destroyed.
Excellent video as always love u channel
Wonderful video as usual. Jackson is my favorite Civil War general. Are you finished with the Valley Campaign or are you going to cover the battles of Port Republic and Cross Keys? I am excited to see what comes next.
We got those battles coming up, Cross Keys then Port Republic
@@WarhawkYT great
Another great video.
Banks was outnumbered over 3 to 1 it wasn’t exactly a great upset victory lol
yeah most battles the confederates where out numbered so i guess it must have felt nice to be on the other side of it for once lol
It’s interesting that the narrative is that the confederate army was outnumbered but what I am learning through this series is that at any given time they outnumbered their opponents more often then not.

Based 5th Connecticut?
quite based if i say so myself
Thanks!
You bet!
I like Nathaniel Banks, he was a good man. I've found (historically), too often, that military commanders get unfairly denounced and condemned. In Nathaniel Bank's case, he was a capable and competent commander, but not able to withstand the military genius of a Stonewall Jackson.
Apparently you are not aware of The Red River Campaign of 1864. N.P."Commissary"Banks was thrashed by a former subordinate of T.J."Stonewall" Jackson.
Gen. Richard Taylor commanded nearly 10,000 troops made up from Texas and Louisiana. These men stopped the bluebellies three miles South of Mansfield La. on April 8th.
I will not go into details, learn on your own.
I've known about the Red River Campaign for a very long time (some many decades). I was first introduced to the American Civil War a half century ago; during that time I've had many occasions to research or investigate it. Banks was competent and capable to command men (simply not brilliant at it). Richard (DIck) Taylor was at 1st Winchester. He was the son of Zachary Taylor, our 12th President. Of course both Dick Taylor and Stonewall Jackson made Banks look terrible, but that's because both Taylor and Jackson were military geniuses, not because Banks was incapable of leading men.
@@ArmenianBishop geniuses? Let’s ease up on the use of that word
@@cal4837 ??!!??
It only got worse for Banks, the Red River campaign was a complete disaster
i cant wait to make that campaign! my greyhound boys gonna come in and smash em
He has returned
Always a pleasure.
gald you liked it Olivier!
another interesting video about a battle i never heard of and im glad they are getting shorter
I heard a story that some of the women in Winchester would shoot the retreating Union Soldiers as they fled from Jackson’s force.
i read similar reports of citizens of winchester shooting at the yanks as they fled the city, even some trying to hamper their retreat
Great job. Ty.
I had 2 relatives in the 46th.
What a great general!
Quite!
This is only for now, just look what happens after this campaign (not going to spoil)
Great stuff
Banks getting Dept of the Gulf after this (and 2nd Manassas) will forever confuse me
My Highschool mascot was the Warhawks. @ James Madison
5:34 literally the muscular Winnie the Pooh meme
Another excellent, excellent video! Thank you for all your efforts!! . . .
It would be awesome if you could use the video game war of rights to show battles 🤔
A series of battles I had never heard of before from the civil war but it involved over ten thousands troops was this
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Charleston_(1862)
which was basically fought over the salt works along the Kanawha River, be great to see it animated and talked about in this format too. I learned of it in the book "Salt a world history"
To be fair banks was screwed the best thing he could have done was fall back into maryland and that would have been very unpopular choice most likely the death of his military career with that department
PLEASE DO THIRD WINCHESTER!
we will when we get to it :3
@@WarhawkYT Hello. I would like to add Russian subtitles to your videos. Do you mind?

Thank god Lincoln pulled First Corps back to defend Washington, you never know when a Confederate ghost army will jump out of the Potomac.
ahaha
With oversight of 150 years after the events and huge mountains of books and any other Informations published about any detail of the civil war it is very easy to blame the historical political & military actors for their wrong decisions. But that is unhistorical und unfair. Every acting person is influinced by a lot of psychological and social factors to make his decisions. And there is no garanty in any case to make the right decision even for a strong and gifted president like Abraham Lincoln. Any Decision Makers at any time have no perfect Information for his decisions. The Fog of War is a historical Reality you have to consider for any military conflict. We today know with clarity that Jackson had no intend and no military capabilities to attack Washington DC in 1862. But Lincoln in the Moment of Summer of 1862 could not know this and made a logical defensive decision to protect the capital with reinforcements from McDowells Corps. The Union Command had not even accurate numbers about Jackson real strenght and so they overexaggerate it and this error was even more grievious by McClellan at Richmond about the Confederate Army. The most important impact of Jackson Valley Campaign was psychological. His manouvers and battles created an image of his army which was fare more threatening to the Union than his real numbers of man were adequate to achieve. But that is the reality of War not only in the Civil War.
@@maco3893 Winifred Scott was ill and left the army, so Lincoln remained alone with a corrupt politician as Cameron and with a strong effect of the media mainly at the East Theater. The media campaign brought Mc Clallen to the neck of Lincoln , after a nothing West Virginia walking, where instead of him Rosecrans secured West Virginia. Lincoln first success was to find Stanton. With a exaggeration North won the War by the the fleet both the salt and the brown water fleet. Background of Grant's success was a strong fleet aid in his first whole 2 years from Belmont to Vicksburg. Shiloh was be won by the boats to help Buall"s army to cross the river quickler. But on this time he learnt to became good army leader. Funny but the best four best Northern Army leaders came from the West as Grant, Sherman, Thomas and Sheridan.
I really don‘t think it‘s a bad idea to keep a decent-sized reserve guarding your capital in that situation. It was arguably on McClellan for being unable to take Richmond with any reasonably-sized army and pulling almost all available forces into his ill-fated campaign where his numerical superiority was ultimately thrown away by his dithering.
Ha! Ya know, I think McClellan drank more than Grant. He was seeing double his entire command.

Anyone know why the colors he uses for regiments aren't uniform? Why are there some blue confederate regiments?
Hey Jon, they represent the color the regiment wore at the battle based on our best research of the uniforms
@@WarhawkYT ah thanks! I thought they maybe the case. Appreciate you clearing it up; I couldn't stand the mystery any longer! Love the channel!
Ah, yes, Winchester.
Let's go Ltc George D. Chapman (Sigh)
Now with Banks defeated, Washington is under threat. But now, Lincoln will try and take the reigns to destroy Jackson in the valley.
less goo
It's sad that all of the pictures you use to illustrate this video show the Confederates with the battle flag. It wasn't adopted by the Army of Northern Virginia for another year after this battle. So much for visual accuracy. In the Valley, we say Straws-burg not Strass-burg.
You are aware that the particular style of flag had been adopted in the East since November of '61, right?
@@The_Unrepentant_McClellanite I stand corrected. I thought it had been adopted in the winter of 62-63, not 61-62. Embarrassing, I had two great-greats with the 33rd VA.
Jackson was a wizard on the battlefield, his tactics are studied to this day by the military. Old Bluelight.
His tactics are absolutely not studied to this day. Nothing he did is applicable at this point in warfare.
@@2639theboss Bullshit. I live behind the confederate lines at Chancellorsvile, and every year 200 marine officer candidates March down Old Plank road to re- enact Jackson's flanking movement around Hookers flank. I've talked to them, it's part of their training and tactics. Not just his movements, but the physical ability that his foot cavalry could accomplish.
@@kfiscal01 Soldiers will do marching exercises all the time. There is nothing "studyable" about what you described. Its soldiers mixing a bit of local history to the exercises and PT they have to do, to make it more interesting.
Modern warfare, with mechanization, combined arms support, and the platoon system is completely different and even if Jackson was a military genius, his tactics would not be studied because line battles and horse logistics arent relevant.
@@2639theboss
thats like saying the book art of war is not read any more by any military lol man people have studied battles from the past throughout all of history to help them in what was “their modern times” how can you know how to defend or defeat a tactic if you do not understand the tactic being used on you? i cant speak for sure that our military studies this but it would not seem like a bad idea to learn the past moves to be ready for the old tricks but if you did not know the old tactics would it be old to you? if it was your first time seeing it?
@@youngguns1319 lol I’m sure they’re studying Jackson vs Banks in Ukraine right now 🙄😆
