Kubelik was one of the best with Dvorak's music, as evidenced by this splendid performance. Thanks for the upload.

True, but let’s give the most credit where it belongs: conductors don’t actually make the music. The highly trained musicians do. Without them, there is silence and a dude waving his arms.

@@waynewells3297 True, though I think to a limited extent. The orchestra is the conductor's instrument. That's why the same orchestra playing the same music sounds different with different conductors. Great performances are a symbiosis of conductor and musicians, built upon the hours of work they did together in rehearsal to achieve a shared vision of the music.

@@leestamm3187 Agreed, up to a point. But as someone who performed for many years as an orchestral musician, I can assure you that the people who actually make the music are a bit wary of the idea that the conductor is actually “playing an instrument “. When I’m playing an instrument well, I have total control over an inanimate object. When a conductor presides over a great performance (Kudos to the orchestra and Kubelik in this case), it is a successful collaboration with many other people, not a conductor “playing” the orchestra. The conductor obviously has to sell his or her vision to the musicians who actually produce the music, and he/she also obviously needs considerable skill and artistic vision to do so. But let’s not forget (as I might have said before) that without the musicians we simply have silence and a dude waving his arms.

@@waynewells3297 We seem to be splitting hairs, as we are largely in agreement that a great performance is a successful collaboration.

@@leestamm3187 , Yes, a great collaboration indeed. But there’s a long history involved in the musicians adamantly rejecting the idea that they are an “instrument “ to be played. I’m pretty chill about it, but I know many orchestral musicians who are insulted by that language, for good reasons. Just sayin’…..

Quante volte ho ascoltato questa sinfonia famosissima e frequentata da tantissimi direttori. Eppure questa lettura mi sembra “ diversa”, “ muova”,” superlativa”.
