Actress playing Jade Fox was Cecilia Cheng Pei Pei Queen of Martial Arts cinema in the 1960-1970’s. Cecilia passed the sword to Michelle in the 1980’s. Having Cecilia here with Michelle was brilliant casting!
I'm Chinese Canadian, the minor skinny lipstick thing is indicator of the Aristocrat class, same thing with the grand flat head piece worn by females of this class
What an embarrassment to Chinese everywhere. Please don’t spout false info and do some research. The lipstick is a beauty trend of the time. The headdress has nothing to do with class but ethnicity. That is a manchurian costume.
Something else I forgot to say. I was in 8th grade when this movie was released in the states. There was so much buzz about it at the time, and I'm happy it still holds up. I forgot that Zhang Ziyi was only 20 when she was in this movie. Cant' believe she's 45 now. Still looks as glamuous as ever along with Michelle Yeoh. Great actresses. Great movie. You picked a gem.
Chow Yung Fat is no slouch either...he's one of my Fav's... Michelle goes without saying. Marshall Arts may seem the focus, but it's a tragic tale of unrequited love that crosses all cultures. It's power still twists my heart no matter how many times I have seen it.
One of the great things about this film is that every single fight scene featured at least one female character. Something very untraditional in most martial art movies. Around this time, two other great films came out. Some people have already mentioned “Hero”, an amazingly beautiful film. The other being “House Of Flying Daggers” which is extraordinary and doesn’t get enough attention, imo.
2nd this. I'm not sure why Hero is not more widely remembered. I expected the action scenes to be good, but I was surprised at the depth of the plot. Very underrated.
3:09 "i notice the difference in the lipstick". The smaller lipstick is used for younger girls. Smaller is considered cuter to go along with their smaller lips. They do the same in Japan for Maikos (Geisha in training, ages 14 to 17). Once they become full Geisha, they wear full lipstick (along with different kimono and hairstyles too)
Best sword fighting I have ever seen in my life. This was the first dvd I ever bought when I had no tv for a period of about 6 months so I watched it over and over again on a lap-top.
Great reaction! The Last Emperor is a great film depicting the life of China's last Emperor, Puyi, and the upheavals in China during the 20th century. I think you would enjoy it!
Also, priot to THE MATRIX, only asiannfilms made generous use of techniques like wire work action scenes. So, after this film made it US debut, and The Matrix, we saw a Lot more wore work in films.
Lol Pretty sure that was the exact face I made in the theater, Nick.😮 I’ve been obsessed since Saturday Kung Fu Theater in the ‘80’s w/all things martial arts. I love this movie
I showed it to westerners. Those who were middle aged and above were all touched. Some HK people laughed during the emotional scenes though because they were not used to watching yeoh in non action scenes.
Look this up! (Its short, fyi) UA-cam "2014 Wushu women spears" ...no camera cuts, no Hollywood, just raw skill. One false move, even with a blunted spear... These two ladies would eat John Wick as an appetizer _before_ breakfast.
Not a martial arts film but any chance you guys react to "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"???? The Rooney Mara version. Also once you finish The Sopranos, consider checking out "Killing Eve". So glad you guys are back!!!

The whole movie was Ang Lee's homage to all the Chinese tales he grew up with.

I didn’t see any tigers or dragons, Then I realized they were crouching and hiding.
- Steve Martin
He wouldn't know culture if it dangled in front of his nose.
@@couch.patati-patata It's just a joke. Mr Martin is actually a very cultured fellow. He's a very serious art collector, for one.

Jade fox just passed away. She was a great actress.
Another good Asian film w/ similar motif, is HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS
If you haven’t watched Hero 2002 yet you need too

9:31 they wanted the revenge for themselves, they wanted be the ones to kill her , so they chained him up while he isn't looking
I saw this in the cinema when it was first released, a wonderful film. Very glad you liked it.
Along with the fine recommendations of Memoirs of a Geisha and Hero, may I recommend “Raise the Red Lantern” a fine book adaptation.

Thanks for continuing to do this channel. I got a rough life situation going on, and your videos help me cope with it. Appreciate you.
We're glad to help! Stay strong! ❤️

Michelle Yeoh did this movie with a torn ACL
I think y’all would enjoy Memoirs of a Geisha. It’s not an action film but it’s very interesting to learn about that culture & beautifully filmed.
I second thid comment. It is an amazing movie art-direction and cinematography wise, despite its flaws. The actors are all amazing
one of my favorite movie of Michelle Yeoh. She also had a knee surgery on the weeks of shooting..
also watch REIGN OF ASSASSINS also a good movie.
I’m counting the days till we see your reaction to 12 Angry Men and The Soprano’s!!👍
