I stand by my ethos that at any point you can build a solid mid range computer for 900 dollars, as long as you wait for part sales and already have the peripherals (mouse keyboard monitor) 900$ budget builds are becoming increasingly viable as time goes on too, because there's has been a rapid decline in games requiring higher and higher specs.

I already know people who don't have computers, my buddy has a phone and an xbox. I'm an animator/designer/filmmaker so I need a computer to do work and art but for lots of the people I know whose career and interests outside gaming aren't directly related to some form of advanced software the only reason they have a laptop instead of a tablet is because they prefer writing emails on an actual keyboard. I'm even questioning the need for this next generation of consoles, I've got a release day xbox one and while it definitely chugs on loading screens and startup(which is a problem I know I could solve by getting an S or X if it really bothered me), I can play everything, it all looks good, and none of the games that interest me or any of my friends are pushing cutting edge tech. The games I play on PC are basically just indies that I can't get on Switch or Game Pass. Convenience is king.
Just to put a vote into your study, when I heard you weren't talking about Sonic first I made this comment first and left because essentially what you said to me was "We need to pad out the podcast so they don't leave when we start talking about boring stuff, here's an idea. As a PC gamer who enjoys playing fast paced FPS games, ie Rainbow Six Siege or Counter-Strike, i would never move to any type of gaming platform that I couldn't use my Mouse/Keyboard, with
I just built my friend a machine with 16gb of ddr4, i5-8400, and a gtx 1060 6gb, 500GB M2 SSD w/1TB 7200 RPM HDD for a little under 800 w/ rebates. Something like that can handle pretty much anything right now at 60fps+, 1080p on high-ultra settings. hat's with all new parts. you could probably get a used 1070 and cpu (or use a cheaper Ryzen) and knock that up to 1440p High-Ultra on most AAA titles. you could also realistically put together a used 1080ti build for about $1000 if you don't care about the bells and whistles. Consoles are always the cheaper option in the short term cost/performance (cheaper components and better optimization), but subscription fees, worse prices on games, and having to replace the entire machine in order to upgrade will clear that margin. That said, I still recommend consoles to people who want to just plug in and play, already have a decent laptop, and don't have any available friends with PC expertise.
Part of the reason I drop the money I do on PC gaming (I managed to snag a good 2080ti) is for graphics on max on awesome resolutions (my monitor is 21:9 ultrawide) at high framerates. Having the monitor close to you also feels more natural than staring at a screen across the living room. That and mouse and keyboard is more comfortable for me. Edit: it's also a point of pride to customize your rig. It isn't a cookie cutter item like consoles are.
I got sad when Adam was handling that laptop like that without even thinking twice about it. BTW, PC gaming is here to stay. That study is dumb. EDIT: Also, what is Lawrence talking about? Every single PC game I get which I have also played on console looks way better, and it isn't just due to the resolution .
Most PC gamers have a PC for one of 3 reasons: They want the best graphics possible with the best framerate, they prefer the input device or there are games on PC unavailable on console.
I have never gamed with a console on a TV as my primary setup. I have always used a desk with monitor/TV and I'm certain most gamers with a console play the same way as me with under half playing on a living room TV.
I'm gonna be honest, I was indifferent to this movie until the Jim-Carrey-as-Robotnik pictures hit the internet. The weird LazyTown energy he's giving off is compelling.
I absolutely remember the first time I got into sonic. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Sega Genesis. I still play it. It is still a great game, and one of my favorite games of all time.
i love my pc more then anything even though i know i will have to probably build a new one soon. Im okay with that, because i use my pc for everything not just playing games.
the one thing that no one is talking about on the PC decline is the other stuff that the PC can do. A gaming PC isn't just for gaming. It can do media, work and other stuff within games such as mods, emulation and backwards compatibility. If a next generation console costs ~$600 and it's as good as a PC that currently costs $700-$1000 I'd say a PC is still way better than the console for those reasons that I mentioned. Another reason that a PC will be even better than a console just for gaming is that you don't always have to have the best of the best gear but still be able to play the same games as everyone else. Maybe 5 years from now 4k might be the current 1080/1440p across the board but that doesn't mean that a person wont still play at 1080p or even 1440p with $400 (with gear 5 years from now) and still have all the benefits of PC.
Gotta say, I’ll always have a pc but for years it’s been a strictly work machine being audio/video recording & editing. Maybe it’s an old habit I developed years ago but when I first started out & was a junior in a studio, we just didn’t run anything other than audio programs for stability reasons. I’m sure things have changed since, the hardware definitely has from a compatibility perspective, but I guess the other factor for me is most of my friends are on console, so I’m on console. Actually I imagine the same would be common for many in pc communities - people may often gravitate towards the platforms their friends play on most.
As someone who works and sells PC's for a living. The amount of people who exclaim they don't game then tell me they play solitaire and maybe minecraft or sims. It is perhaps atleast they associate it with consoles. And in regards to PC's under 1000, its typically new people or families looking for the cheapest option.
My six year old nephew is obsessed with sonic. Neither of his parents play video games, he just saw the character and was like “that guy kicks ass”. Adam’s constant “KIDS WONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS” is based on straight up nothing but a weird assumption. A new sonic cartoon came out within the last two years, that shit was not marketed to adults. Just god damn man, this was legitimately hard to watch. We had as much reason to be invested in old Bugs Bunny shorts as kids today do in Sonic, yet we all grew up saying “what’s up doc?”

My understanding of Moore's Law is that it is in effect, thus decreased PC upgrades over time.
26:40 holy shit elyse ending that sentence was the funnniest shit.
Elyse's shirt is my favorite thing ever
On the topic of sonic throwing rings that can teleport people, wasn't that a thing in one of the old sonic cartoons?
Adam: "I'm here in spirit only".
No Adam, that has never happened ever.
