  • The Star and the Car is a documentary about Gary Goltz, and how his love of the 50's TV series HIGHWAY PATROL led to restoring a 1955 Buick to the appearance of Broderick Crawford's car used on the classic show. Visit Gary's Buick Website: garysbuick.com/
Along the way, Gary used Crawford's persona combined with a judo discipline to become a successful businessman. Gary's upward mobility landed him in California, where he met the surviving HIGHWAY PATROL cast members and crew. When a '55 Buick came up for sale, Gary bought it and six months later was driving a fully decked out replica of Crawford's car. From there, it was non-stop charity events for the CHP's 11-99 Foundation and other worthy causes...and more than a few celebrity encounters. From the 50's to the 21st century...it's a great ride!
The STAR and the CAR World Premiere screening was held July 29, 2018, at the Automobile Driving Museum in El Segundo, California. Hosted by 'Shotgun' Tom Kelly, a behind-the-scenes Q & A was held for 150 attendees. A panel discussion followed - • The STAR and the CAR W...

As an 11 year old, I was glued to my grandparents' 15" round screen Dumont console television set when Broderick Crawford and Highway Patrol aired.....Cisco Kid, too. My grandparents were Russian Jewish immigrants, too. My uncle, Dad's brother, bought a new '55 Buick. I was fascinated by the exploding postwar automotive industry and knew every new make and model on the road. My first car was a '53 Nash Rambler, red and black two tone with a Continental kit housing the spare tire on the back bumper. I've never gotten over my love for old cars. I own seven now having just added a thirty-one year old Bentley Mulsanne S to my auto insurance policy.

Never underestimate the power those seemingly SMALL events in our lives can lead to. The influence of this Fantastic TV show caused this man to replicate the car in homage To Broderick Crawford, brought HIM into contact with so MANY more people and has spread as much joy to others as it has to its owner. All because a small boy was influenced by a big man and a big car. A wonderful tribute to an amazing actor. Bravo.

Yeah, getting so drunk that BC routinely passed out on the set while shooting. He never was allowed to drive a car except on a movie set with direct supervision. He is well known with MADD.
Some of the sets were shot with him laying on the floor, way too drunk to stand.
Numerous sources used i ncluding ImDB and wikipedia.

This is a great story, because I, too, watched "Highway Patrol" with my grandma. When I went to college, in the early 70s, they were showing re-runs of the show in the late afternoon, and soon, I had the whole fraternity watching the show after classes. Finally, we decided that October 4th (10-4) should be "Broderick Crawford Day" on campus. We bought 50's suits and Fedora's from local thrift stores and we were the image of Dan Matthews! Awesome show.

My grandad had a 54, 55, and a 57 Buick, also a 58 Pontiac Chieftan. Man...seing those cars fully restored in the classic car websites brings back tears and memories. I have two classic cars my self, and Mr Goltz was spot on when he said in the telecast that when people see these cars, their response is "OFF THE HOOK", and when I drive either one of my classics, especially when I have them both in car shows @ the same time. I am 75 years in age and when Highway Patrol would air, I'm sitting right there to watch, and would never miss a telecast. This video was amazing. Thank You Mr Goltz!

Broderick Crawford and this show is the direct reason that I went into ham radio! From the first time I saw Crawford standing outside his car talking on his radio I had a burning desire to have a radio in my car someday. It wasn't long after I started driving when I had one, and have never gone without one since. He influenced me that much!

Agree on the production value of these old shows, love watching the "Booper's" that went right threw to broadcasting,
Wonder how many of the 'extra' cars on the show were really the crews own vehicles??
The Ford panel van must have been part of the production crews van, same van in the shows it was used, and later had the roof rack added........All in all, great show for the times, and fun to watch today. Classic TV!!!

He got around town, and he seemed to be a friendly guy. A lot of those people were extras in the downtown shooting. Alas, the "capital" building that was used in the film (the old courthouse) was razed in 1961.

The 55’ Buick is my favorite and loved the show. I might’ve missed it I’ll have to watch again but another actor by the name of Stuart Whitman played a HP too. Awesome what you did with your life with this car. 👏

Wow! What a super fan!! I was born in '59, but the show was on afternoons in the early '70's in Southern California and I couldn't wait to get home to watch it. Already, I was interested in how much California had already changed in only 15-17 years. Most of what appeared rural in the show, had already been built up. I guess I was always interested in the history of life around me. As for Buicks, when I moved to Utah in the late '80's, I bought a '54 Special. I think there were many similarities between '54 & '55 including the engines. But I loved that car. As a result, I grew to have a great appreciation for Buicks overall. Sad to see what they've become lately however... Thank you for the great video and memories!!

Excellent video. I used to watch it on Australian television after school. Few actors can talk that fast and still be clearly understood.

Thanks for all the work you did in making this video. The show was produced slightly before I was born but I have been watching it on UA-cam on and off the last 2 years. Was the passenger spotlight actually blue on the original 1955 production Buick? I always thought it was clear because it looks clear on the show.

    • @gsgoltz
      @gsgoltz  4 роки тому

It was clear but blue looks a lot better and Captains had the option of using blue, FYI.

Excellent video, Gary!!! Brings on extreme case of nostalgia. Love the 50’s cars. So much styling and individuality. Was kids we used to sit and identify each car coming two blocks away. Prettiest cars include 1957 Chevy and Ford, the Chrysler Corp fin cars late 50’s.
And your video brings to mind California and the appeal it had in the 1950’s.

I grew up watching Highway Patrol Beaver Cleaver and later DRAGNET and ADAM 12. All in beautiful *Black and White.* Dad even had a 1954 Buick when I was 15 and would let me drive it to Camp Union when we'd go to the cabin. Those were the days. I enjoyed your presentation very much... I too like old things...

That was a class-A video there. Well done. I love the car, would like to see more of it, especially the build. But, what you're doing there, the charity work, all class-A, dude. I was born in 1965, but Highway Patrol and Sea Hunt were still syndicated thru the early 70s, I remember watching them as a kid, and Rawhide as well. I'm guessing the car is worth a lot more than $36,000 now.

Awesome Video. I remember when this series started on T V, always watched. Great Nostalgia & memories!!👍Love seeing the spectators on the parade route, laughing, cheering and waving! Thanks for sharing!👏👍 On a sad note😓, however, seeing the once beautiful California city scenes, some of which now, esp in L A & "FRISCO", have now deteriorated to below a "Third World" status!

A great piece by Gary. I watch Highway Patrol on you tube at every free chance. Its a time warp, to see the great 50s America. The best cars in the world and Dan Mathews was a legend. No nonsense Broderick, if only we can turn back to the golden age again.

This car's out every 10/4 (Oct 4)in Hollywood, along with other local law enforcement cars, new & old. A really fun event, starts from the Fire Station/LAPD Hollywood office on Wilcox. The parade of cars heads up to Hollywood Blvd & down the blvd parade style & stops briefly at Brodericks star. Draws quite a crowd.

Awesome video, I'm 74 years old and in 1955 my father had a two tone 55 Buick Special, we did many trips on Route 66 to New Mexico to visit relatives, this car has a special place in my Heart, as my father was a car guy and a new car every two years, his next ar was a 1957 Ford Fairlane. My license plate says USART66 in honor of my father. Needless to say Highway Patrol with my favorite TV show at the time.

I owned a 1955 Buick special 2 door hardtop I bought from a family friend about 1965 for $175. I rode in it when I was 12 years old in 1955. One of my friends named at the Iron Pig, which was appropriate. It's served me well for perhaps 60000 Miles I gave it to a friend for almost nothing. He got some more use out of it until it finally died somewhere in Chicago with probably 160 or 170,000 miles. Rest in peace Iron Pig.
