      I don't know if I'd say proper (I'm a CNC machinist), but it's great info on the basics of how to get the job done. They themselves openly state they're cutting corners to just get it running; watching the videos in this thread, I can see them for myself. That being said, they're cutting no more corner's than I probably would in their place.
      They're so close!!! I want to hear it roar!!!!!

      In the late 60's we had a 25ft.x 15ft. room lined with flat tin that we used as spray both. We had a Repco Demon space heater at one end that used lighting kerosene. In Winter all you could see at the end of the room were flames shooting up out of the heater.
      It obviously never occurred to us that we could have been the second crew to land on the moon. Not long after that WH&S made the boss put in flame proof lights and switches, as the heater was not alight, they never said anything. Now you need steel capped thongs to collect the mail.

      I remember a couple of years ago there was this guy who had a DIY-program on Danish tv. He once showed how to make a spray booth for aerosol painting from a wooden box and a vacuumer/hoover. Proud man - made it by himself.
      Next week he had to tell everybody to DON’T DO IT!
      It turned out that the vacuumer/hoover dragged the fumes through the electric motor and a single spark could cause an explosion. With a risc of burning down the house. 🤔

    You need a coil rated at 9V and run through a resistance wire. The resistance wire is shorted out during starting to compensate for battery voltage drop.

    • @DanafoxyVixen
      @DanafoxyVixen 3 роки тому

      "You need.." No you dont. while such systems are better than 12v coils.. they certainly weren't common on British cars at the time this engine was made... and this engine wont be under much cold-winter cranking when 9v coils makes more sense. Keep it simple.. a 12v coil will be fine

    • @chrishartley1210
      @chrishartley1210 3 роки тому

      Remember that the original was thought to be a parallel twin rather than this configuration. This configuration means that there is more load on the starter, and therefore more current and voltage drop, just prior to the ignition point. You can hear the extra load on the starter as the cylinders go through the compression stroke. Additionally, since this isn't the original starter we do not know much about the comparative current profile.
      Putting all that together, I believe this is why it needed a second battery to power the ignition circuit which could be overcome with a 9V coil and ballast. Or, assuming there isn't going to be a charging system, just continue with 2 batteries.

      Just raw potato juice. Grate potato and strain the juice from the cuttings. Maybe the starch in the juice. When you get flash burn it feels like you have sand in your eyes, it’s because of the damaged tissue ( burnt layer) the juice flush out the damaged tissue. I have never done it but worked around a lot of old timer welders who have all stated it works.

    Point of concern is the balance in this engine, it has to be seen how it's going to behave itself

    • @thephilpott2194
      @thephilpott2194 3 роки тому

      Sounds like it'll run, doesn't it? Static balance should be reasonable, but as they have discussed the firing strokes will be clustered together due to the inability to create a crank with a humungous centre balance weight and have the pistons moving in synchrony. So it'll be bang-bang-whoosh-whoosh rather than bang-whoosh-bang-whoosh! It'll be a strange sounding motor.

    • @EDesigns_FL
      @EDesigns_FL 3 роки тому

      @@thephilpott2194 The engine is neither statically or dynamically balanced. It will run like a paint mixer. It was jumping during their short start attempts and it will be much worse when its running.
      The crank pins and counter weights were initially aligned on the crankshaft segments, and they should have remained that way. Inexplicably, they decided to offset the crank pins 180°, remove the crank weights, and needlessly created an unbalanced engine.

    The little motor is coming on really well. I first got interested in welded up cranks of different configurations after finding an old article by Phil Irving (Vincent motorcycles, Tuning for Speed etc). He was speculating on the advantages of the 70° or 90° offset crank configuration applied to British parallel twins. I was about to start re-engineering one of the cranks I had by machining a new flywheel and cutting and re welding the lobes when my good friend Mike Leadbeater passed away and his lovely widow offered me a Rob Nourish one piece crank Mike had made in the 80's.
    There's some great information about the welded option from a guy called Geoff Collins which has been helpful.
    My race engines are slowly coming together and I really should perhaps film the builds but most of my time is taken up with customer's jobs and I swear too much for UA-cam 😁 I'm working on modifying a standard Boyer Bransen ignition system and setting up the crank and camshaft endfloat. What I wouldn't do for a little lotto win so I could spend every day building my own bikes. A historic Formula Ford would be the dream addition to the stable. I used to work as a race mechanic on a few of them.

    Had arc eyes once when I was about twelve. I used to help my father on weekends when he was welding the steel floors in 20 X 60 silos. I would push the metal plates into place, strike off the slag ever few inches, and keep him fed with welder rod. It was a seven hour job. One weekend we drove to Vermont, four hours from home, and upon arrival realized I'd forgotten to bring the second welder's helmet. So, for seven hours I tried not to look as he struck his arc but it was futile. We got home late and I just fell into bed. I woke up in the middle of the night feeling like I had sand in my eyes. I didn't get much sleep that night and I was pretty useless the next day. My dad just grumbled about what a klutz I was.

    The distributor cap has two contacts 180 degrees apart; the distributor rotates at half crankshaft speed to give (for a 4cylinder engine) four sparks in two revolutions. Since your two cylinder engine needs two sparks in one rev and no sparks in the other I think you need a four segment cap using two adjacent contacts. I think you currently have the spark for cylinder 2 at bottom dead centre

    I found Ivan's Shed by accident, but since finding it, and after viewing them all, I find I am impatient while awaiting the arrival of each next one. I'd never heard of a two cylinder Mini, but can't wait to hear it run. It's been a long time since my Mini Seven events with a Downton 850, but I too still enjoy racing. Keep the video's coming they're great.

    Is that 2 cylinder engine is out of a mini monk the two-cylinder engine was in back the monk a project by BMC for the military applications that vehicles. There are some pictures online 1 showing the engine in the back of the monk it's not a great picture you can see a the top of the engine. ?

    I believe I see why your coil was being "robbed" of voltage. You are taking the power for the coil off of the starter post, after a quite long battery cable run. I will bet if you put volt meters on the battery and on the starter post, when not actually starting, the voltage will be close to the same. When starting, I bet the starter volt meter will be a couple volts lower. If you put the battery on the table where the motor is and ran leads for the coil directly to the battery, it would no longer be "robbed"of voltage. What gauge are your jumper cables? The smaller the gauge, the greater the drop under load.

    Sounds like the distributor is only delivering a spark on one third of its rotation?and the timing is out on the other two thirds👍

    • @EDesigns_FL
      @EDesigns_FL 3 роки тому

      @Alfred Wedmore You're not missing anything. A distributor cap for a four cylinder could used with two of the locations blocked off, but this is not how the firing order should have been set up. Ridiculous mistakes like this indicate that they really don't know what they're doing.

    • @EDesigns_FL
      @EDesigns_FL 3 роки тому

      @Alfred Wedmore Thank you for replying.
      You could modify a distributor for your erratic firing sequence, but it's not the best solution. Both pistons should go up and down together on a two cylinder four cycle engine. Although it may seam like a lot of work, you really need to make a new crankshaft. The engine will tear itself apart with the current crankshaft. There are no counter weights and it has asymmetrical power strokes. This is a very bad combination.

    • @EDesigns_FL
      @EDesigns_FL 3 роки тому

      @Alfred Wedmore If this were a heavy low RPM engine like an old hit-n-miss, than the crank imbalances might not be a significate issue, but it's not. This a a relatively light high RPM engine, and the imbalance forces will equate to a large percentage of the engine mass. Centripetal force increases exponentially (square) with RPM.
      The asymmetrical firing order will compound issues with rotation imbalance. Your comparisons conflate several different engine types that are completely irrelevant to this situation. A double acting steam cylinder produces two power strokes per revolution; a two cycle cylinder produces one power stroke per revolution, and a four cycle only produces one power stroke every two rotations. A two cylinder four cycle engine should have a power stroke every 360°, but this engine has them at 180° and then 540°. The rotating assemble will accelerates on power strokes and decelerate on compression. This little crankshaft is going to twist back and forth like a rubber band and the engine is going to needlessly oscillate because of a poor design choice.
      Before they hacked it up, the crank segments had appropriately sized counter balance weights and the crank pins aligned. They should have left it that way, but they inexplicably offset the pins and cut off the counter balance weights. They made more work for themselves and threw the engine out of balance. Very amateurish mistake.

    • @EDesigns_FL
      @EDesigns_FL 3 роки тому

      @Alfred Wedmore Your first sentence indicates that you aren't well versed in math and explains why you are having difficult understanding the issues. The exponent is 2 which is also the same value for squaring.
      The term you seem to be looking for is "quadratic moment of area". It is used to derive both the allowable strength and stiffness of a component. It is not necessary to derive the values in this instance because the inherent design is so tragically flawed.
      The original crankshaft segments had paired counter weights that would have fit nicely into this two cylinder block and provided a semblance of primary balance. They would not have interfered with the center main bearing. It would be absolutely asinine to fit a single large center counter weight into this engine. So it's irrelevant whether it would fit or not. The original crank layout would have worked fine.
      The one thing that you seem to have correct is that the original mini crankshaft pins are mirrored from the middle. Again, all they had to do was remove the two middle pin segments and join the pin segment for pistons 1 and 4. Very simple, and it would have maintained balance.
      Centripetal forces are important in balancing an engine because of angular momentum. It's one of the factors that effects primary balance which is a dynamic, not a static function. Your claim " that there will be good primary balance but a fair sized secondary rocking couple" is pure garbage and evidences a complete lack of understanding of engine balance. Primary balance refers vibration which occurs at the fundamental frequency (first harmonic) of an engine. This vibration occurs at the frequency of crankshaft rotation. The dynamic imbalances of this crankshaft will cause serious "primary balance" issues. Non-sinusoidal imbalances, which occur at twice the frequency of crankshaft rotation are referred to as "secondary imbalance", not the crap you mentioned.
      And to finish this diatribe, in addition to everything else, you are also wrong about "A" series crankshafts not having "balance" weights. Though they're not large, there absolutely are counter weights a/k/a balance weights on both ends of "A" series crankshafts, and you denying the truth doesn't change it. Engines in Ford Model T's did not have crankshaft counter weights, but that was a 100 years ago and well before the "A" series at issue. Typical post 1940's engines do have counterweights on the crankshaft.
      Unless they change the crankshaft, you will be able to see for yourself how ridiculously out of balance this engine is and how wrong you are. I hope that you will show some character and post an apology.

      @Alfred Wedmore You really need help. You went to Wikipedia to find the definition of an exponential function because you don't know what they are in a vain attempt to defend your b.s. Unfortunately, you failed to comprehend the explanation. Here's a simple way to identify them: the result increases exponentially, e.g. squared, cubed, to the the fourth power, etc. They have an EXPONENT, and centripetal force increases as a square of velocity. Accordingly, it is an exponential function. Your continued denial of the incontrovertible truth just make you appear dumber, but that's on you.
      I owned an RD400 in high school and I still have a two cylinder two stroke outboard on one of my boats. So yeah, I have a little experience with them. None of them would/can get close to 9500 RPM. And , it's evident from your comments that you cannot comprehend the differences between a two cycle twin and a four cycle twin.
      How you respond to being proven wrong does not affect me in the least, but it does convey a lot about you, and it's not flattering.

    Early carburetors were of the surface type, in which air is combined with fuel by passing over the surface of gasoline. If a container cap with some petrol or starter fluid was held at the intake it may have started.
    The fact that the engine would try to fire a few cycles after the squirt of starter fluid indicates that the initial squirt resulted in a mixture too rich to run, after the mixture leaned out the cylinders fired.
