"'Solitary Man' was written in my house in Massapequa, Long Island, New York and was inspired by the minor-key of the Beatles song 'Michelle', which I loved. 'Solitary Man' convinced me I'd always been this quiet, introverted kid. Then one of my fellow 6th grade graduates came backstage recently and showed me our 6th grade graduation book. I was shocked to be reminded that I had been voted 'Most Cheerful'. That totally shook my whole concept of what I was like as a child. I thought I was a loner and it turns out I was probably a cheerleader. On the other hand, 'Cheerful Man' wouldn't have sounded as good." - ND (1996)
"'Solitary Man' was my first song where I tried to really raise the level of my songwriting. It was inspired by the Beatles' song 'Michelle,' which was also written in a minor key. I don't think I'd ever written a song in a minor key before, it was the first and it kind of broke the dam for me." - ND
The song "Solitary Man" by Neil Diamond is about the narrator's journey in life as he experiences the pain of losing loves, and his failed attempts of finding someone that he can truly be with. Despite all the heartache and disappointment, he remains alone, accepting that he is a solitary man who will keep searching until he finds the one who will truly love and stay with him. In essence, the song is a reminder that despite the many tribulations one faces in life, hope is still alive, and that one should trust that they will eventually find the person they can stay with forever.

I just read today about the Description of this Solitary Man and it amazed me I even remember of what he said that he is a loner like in a fish tank without water.I laughed to myself and he is not alone.He is very lucky that God give him very special gift that no one can take it.Lastly I don’t know how to thank you enough for putting your effort to share this to all of his fans and this is a sacrifice God the Holy Spirit be with you our Dearest Doug 🙏❤️😊( June 4,’24)4;15am
Thank very much for your kind words directed at Neil and myself, Rosario, much appreciated. Right now, I'm feeling rather despondent. I spent the last two weeks, following my elder sister's passing (6 days after her 82nd birthday) creating a video that contained the instrumentals and a song that I was given the task by my family, to setup the music for her funeral. She loved Neil Diamond. Even said so when we visited her 3 weeks before her passing. This is the setlist -

Honestly, after seeing ND perform the phenomenal songs of the early Era, i.e. Solitary Man, (concerts in Atlanta and Las Vegas 1976), that time in his career is naturally my favorite. I am a True fan of the classic early songs...."sung blue," and that makes them all iconic. 😊

Thanks for your ongoing efforts Doug. ND's regret about not filming HAN doesn't really bother me that much. Back then in 1972, the quality of video and accompanying audio was still in its infancy (compare Love at the Greek in 1976 to HAN3 in 2012) and still very grainy. We were instead blessed with an outstanding audio production without peer at that time. For me, this is still the best version of "Solitary Man". Trust you're keeping well Doug, all the best, Paul

Totally agree with your sentiments regarding the non-filming of the Hot August Night series of concerts, so much so that I've decided to quote you into the future when viewers bemoan the absence thereof. As a matter of fact, I have already quoted you in my response to Diana Flop, on this page. 😊Thank you. 🙏 I guess my lament the fact that there is but an extremely limited collection of still photographs. 😞
As for your opinion that this version of "Solitary Man" is the best, again, I'm in total agreement. As a matter of fact, I favour all songs on the Hot August Night album over the studio versions or for that matter, Neil's later renditions. I believe Neil sang from his _soul_ as opposed to from his _heart_ in later years. I seem to remember you querying why I opted for Neil's Live in Las Vegas version of "Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show" (from his boxset "Stages 1970-2002 compilation). I remember responding my reason being that with his Hot August Night version (which I prefer), Neil did not commence from the actual beginning of the song, but rather with... "Brothers! …." instead of, "Hot August Night...."

In doing so, I lost the 207,000 views it accumulated. I was unhappy with my infancy skill levels back then and also the fact that it was in 4:3 aspect ratio (square screen) as opposed to the 16:9 aspect ratio (wide screen). Take care.
