this song, and the others Camellia produced for MRD, comprise some of his most cohesive "recent' works. I really want to see new projects from him that can do songwriting as well as this does.
When I first heard this song, I thought it was surprisingly upbeat for something titled "Heartless Being", but then I realized (Spoiler): It might not just be referring to the final boss, but to Mad Rat deciding to sacrifice himself to save Heart. He's literally becoming a heartless being.
(SPOILERS) Not sure if I worded this right, BUT: This comment hits harder if you think of “Heartless Being” as Mad Rat becoming a heartless being without Heart himself. Not any other heart, specifically Heart. He’s loosing the only person who really cared about him because of his sacrifice, but he’s content with that as long as Heart gets to continue living.

SPOILERS Found it funny how much the Rat God reminds me of Airy from Bravely Default 1 and bits of Anna from Second! Both start out as trustworthy allies who do start dropping hints that they DON'T have your best interest at heart. And even keep up the "innocent act" once they've been revealed as Evil well in Airy case since Anna is evil from the start with a touch of sadism because in their mind, your beneath them and should just do as your told as it will make things EASIER on you. The Anna part is how The Rat God views her own joint end with Mad Rat as not a bad thing! She doesn't care if she dies as long as it's her instinct to propagate her "Seed" by using the Rat she's in to be eaten and pass her on to another Bigger Host (cat). She even tries to remind that Mad Rat was also prepared to die so they were on the same page so why resist, ignoring the fact their "joint suicide pact" if you'll call it such was born under false pretenses as without Heart, Mad Rat would never have realized the Cake was a lie! In Airy case, it's Ringabel/D though too late who interferes with the last step of Airy plan, while she got what she wanted, it's because of him and other factors the Warriors of Light even GOT a chance to fight her and her master back as the loops make it clear that without Ringabel making the Warriors of Light FOUR, Airy will ALWAYS kill Tiz, Agnes and Edea once they out live their usefulness to her The Anna part is how she states in her second final boss fight how Cryst-Fairies never existed and that beings like herself and airy are more akin to Angels to the God/Goddess that create them and they can care less for anything beyond serving loyally! Everyone else is just dirt with their fellow "cryst-fairies" being no more then rivals to the being their attached to! Hence having no sore feelings on Tiz and company defeating Airy and Ouroboros in the first game as their success would have negative impacts on her and her mistress Providence (Screw ENG making her Male, she will always be female to me! It's rare to get a female Eldritch Abomination Main Big Bad in JRPG). Like the Rat God, she looks down on humans (in Rat God's case her Rat hosts) for how pitiful they are for not having what they have (In Rat God's case, she's following her instincts to survive and propagate, she doesn't have to think on it more and finds Mad Rat pitiful for just not accepting his death and just letting himself die like she wants! He wants to chose his death, and with his fear of cats of course that's the one death he doesn't want! But Rat God SO wants that for the reasons already stated, also to add that he doesn't want to die if the risk of Heart going with him is in place and of course to spite Rat God for tricking him as much as she wants to play that she was just being kind by tricking him to his death and letting him die in blissful ignorance, it's still low ball assholery to do that to someone) Also like them, her pitiful "it can't be" is just the best feeling to have when you see it LOL
