- Not my best work.
Thanks to the original poster of this vid. The audio has been upgraded to stereo & punched up a little. The Who had difficulty that night using borrowed amps & couldn't quite get their trademark sound to come through, resulting in a tinny-sounding set. Notice Keith having his snare drum restored after the song was finished.
The Lilly in the song is
Lillie Langtree a live stage actress from the 1800s who died in 1929
The hanging judge Judge Roy Bean, started the town of Langtree Texas, and named his saloon the Jersey Lilly after her
He had fallen in love with her after only seeing a drawing of her, but sadly never got to meet her. She did come to visit the town and Saloon named in her honor, however the Judge had been previously murdered
Now you know the back story
Entwistle and Moon are such a great rhythm section.
Very underrated Who song. 🎸🤘🔥🔥
Terrific performance....The Who were one of the best live bands.....
The bass melody is insane
this is one of the greatest who songs, can't believe it hasn't seen more interest
It's a very well written song...lots of good chord movement and great rhythm as usual.....
Incredibly strange, weird, fascinating oddity of a song!
Can’t quite comprehend what kind of imagination it requires to invent this magnificent song from nothing!
I love it. It’s freaky,but wonderful.
Sometime in the late 60s, I read an article quoting Pete as saying something like this: "'Pictures of Lily' Is the most beautiful song I've ever written - and the dirtiest."
indeed, it's a great song, beautiful harmonies. They do kind of rush it here.
I kept the 45 single in a dresser drawer.. under my underwear!
Man... Entwistle's bass sounds insane. WOW! So cool.
Pete might have had an amp problem and John's bass is a bit out but I really enjoyed the fact that you can hear what Thunderfingers is doing. Thanks for posting.
They were using the Festival's sound system, which was much smaller than the Who's normal system.
The Who still Rocks today. Thank you for posting....I always love this number.
Fantastic Bass!
John can never be seen in this video. But sure you can hear him.
His tone was amazing
@@StealthyAssassin007 Lead guitar? Not needed! We have lead bass!
It’s amazing how bad camera work was done back then
@@motorcity7137 Catch as catch can cameras in many cases, and often the operators were more stoned than the band. That said, there's some footage out there of Canned Heat at the festival that you'd swear was shot with modern-day digital equipment, but for the 1960s trappings that are obvious.

Harmonies are superb
It's truly a shame that The Who made the decision to not ship over their own equipment, thinking that they would just rent what they needed, not understanding that the available equipment in the U.S. was miles behind what they had in the U.K. at that time. The Who at Monterey were severely compromised by the lack of power. Jimi knew this and his band came fully equipped.
it was a money problem. Atleast we get to see them destroy the equipment, apparently they all just left it there too
Doesn't matter!
You do realize that all the good equipment companies were American, right? Gibson, fender, Marshall.... it's more than obvious that the problem is he playing a single-coil guitar. Like he always did back then until he smartened up. Not many people other than Hendrix can make that work. And now he's back to fender again like an idiot LOL
@@jaykapolka6111 It's nothing to do with single coils. He played a P90 SG for much of the late 60s and early 70s to devastating effect. The poor sound was down to them relying on the amps provided to them, which were just not up to the job. And as for your comment that "he's now back to Fender again like an idiot". Well, he has a great guitar sound now, with a Fender, so basically that disproves your own point...
@@jaykapolka6111 it’s not so much the Amps or the guitars they had pretty simple setups guitar with maybe one or two pedals. It was more the fact that the PA systems were absolute shite back then and The Who were renown for having a good PA systems back in Britain but it was to costly to ship the gear over so they just worked with whatever was there.
Perfect performance!
The Who is the best live band ever
Seen em twice in the mid 00s.
@@BobbyGeneric145
Saw them 3 times.
1971
1975
1980
Twice with Keith Moon.
My favorite who song love it
Mine too
:0
I would imagine Keith's drums were in constant need of "restoration" :)
I would imagine Keith was in constant need of restoration.
yeah, ha, ha I play the drums and it´s very difficult the restoration
Bless Jimmu for his foresight❤️🙏🏽
On this day in 1967 {July 14th} at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon, the Who began the U.S. portion of their first North American tour, they were the opening act for Herman's Hermits...
At the time the Who's "Pictures of Lily" was at #65 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; just under three weeks later it would peak at #51, that also was it's peak position on the chart and it's sixth and final week on the Top 100...
And on May 14th, 1969 "Pictures of Lily" reached #4 {for 1 week} on the United Kingdom's Singles chart...
Between 1965 and 2012 the Who had thirty-three records on the U.K. Singles chart; thirteen made the Top 10 with their two biggest hits both peaking at #2, "My Generation" for 2 weeks in 1965 and "I'm a Boy" for 1 week in 1966...
Sadly, two of the four original members have passed away, Keith Moon {1946 - 1978} and John Entwistle {1944 - 2002}...
May they both R.I.P.
Ok the Who were great, but your comment would of been a lot longer if you listed the Beatles chart listings lol
This is a magical performance from the golden days of classic rock!!...Friends, Lloyd.
Legend has it: The Who and Jimi Hendrix were the last two performers that day. Townsend was pissed because he wanted The Who to be the last, band of the day, not Hendrix. After their famous smashing of their equipment at the end of their set, while heading back to their dressing room, Townsend shouted at Hendrix, who was heading on stage, "FOLLOW THAT!!!"
Thanks for the excellent upload. Audio is quite impressive for 48yrs old.
Here's a clue ... after all these decades old microphones still work as well as current ones ... in fact they can be prized. The mixing and tape are the limiting factors.
Obrigado pelo post. Coisa rara e extremamente puro rock!!!
The Who's performance at Monterey = EPIC WIN
The Who for ever!!!!!!!!!!!!
The only singer to sing Monterrey Pop, Woodstock, Isle of Wight, LiveAid, the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert and STILL touring in 2019.
Forgot singing in acting career, Super Bowl, Olympics, Concerts for the Firefighters of New York, Live 8 (just to name a few others)!
Jimi Hendrix was at those first 3 gigs too, sadly he died before his time
Update, still touring in 2022, and hitting the high notes with WGFA & Quadrophenia! I know, I was there!
Entwistle bass changed rock history.. here it's clear
It is probably hard to tell, but Keith is playing without a snare; he threw it off the set after "Summertime Blues".
Alex Weaver Are you sure? I can clearly
Nah keith always had a spare
For some reason listening to this song you get a woody !
I read that the Who had a dispute with Marshall who claimed they owed money so they went to Hiwatt.
NICE!!
It's the Ox who needs to tune up here, not Roger.
Marshall cabinets, but Pete always used Hiwatt amps in those days - he said the Marshall never really did it for him.
yes Petes guitar may also have been "borrowed" as HungryFreaksDaddy mentioned below. Pete was known to pluck off the walls of local shops as he once stated in the movie "The Kids Are Alright" This might explain the price tag. thanks for the video LeoLiar905.
Finally a clear sounding bass line on this video...hahaha
Tehee I hear the bass louder than guitar :D Enty forever!!!
Thanks!!! Thanks a lot!!!
(But... oh, where's John? ;-;)
"Lilly" is (probably) Lilly Langtree- yes, the same actress Judge Roy Bean was an obsessed fan of! (Ms. Langtree did pass away in "1929"!)
Pete's guitar rig was crap, but John really had his bass cookin!
this is bloody good and it was not one of their better concert
@H3r3Com3sTh3Sun
is Anarchy in the UK that sounds a bit like the intro of this... ten years after,,, ;-)
Go "The OX"
I'm amazed The Who's set at Monterey didn't sabotage their progress in the US or why it's been celebrated as an epochal event down the years. I can only assume it was the explosive finale that stunned the Yanks. The sound quality is shocking in comparison to Hendrix's set, Townshend's guitar sounded like the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show compared to the volcano Hendrix unleashed on the US that weekend.
That would be John Enwhistle !
Johns bass tho... 😁
Why can't anyone restore this like was done with the rest of the set?
You can see a tuning peg dangling off of Pete's guitar.
@vanhanegem57
True
no french horn?
Was the guitar supposed to sound like it was "unplugged"? WTF??
The who and Hendrix blew everyone any.
The intro sounds a bit like Anarchy In the UK by the Sex Pistols
It always bothered me that they so quickly stopped doing all their early tunes live. They should have done later tours devoted to all those great tunes, which I think stand up as well or better than what they were doing in their stadium shows.
it's a price tag dangling.
Roger needed a better monitor or was just out of tune.
Eric Barrett (Hendrix' guitar tech) sabotaged Townshend's fuzz pedal. (just guessing)
monster bass in front in the mix.
duh
Can barely hear anything of Pete's guitar. Could be the way the recording was miced.. John's bass is also a bit out of tune, unfortunately.
Never understood why they mucked about with Vox (think it was an endorsement deal?) when Hendrix came out and blew them away with his trademark combo of Marshall and Fender...
Managers cheaped out and made them rent equipment instead of flying entwistle & Townshend’s stacks over
Would’ve been much more equal otherwise
